Queensland Open

IM David Smerdon, who has recently been selected for the Australian Olympiad team, has just won the Queensland Open held at the Gardiner Chess Centre. David, who said the he was "stoked" at his selection in the national team for the first time, scored a very solid 6.5/7 to cruise home to victory. Only holidaying German FIDE rated player Oliver Koeller was able to take half a point from him.

Jun Calditaran and Saniata Lachica from Chess Asia magazine, Manila, attended the event to check out the chess centre, and to report on an Australian chess tournament. They were accompanied by Jun's mother Mina and sister Lin. We thank them for coming here - they were a pleasure to host. Our thanks also to Annie McGarity and Sue Kimura and their families for helping to look after our guests.
