Emu Park State School
| CHESS The inaugural “Emu Park State School Chess Challenge” kicked off on Tuesday 12 April afternoon in the school hall. Twenty-six students fronted up to challenge various community members in the intensely contested competition. One game which was closely followed was the great battle between our local member Mr Paul Hoolihan and year five student Conor. This competition was played out using the school’s oversized chess set where Conor ultimately claimed victory in this hard fought competition. Mr Hoolihan was gracious in defeat and went on to claim victory in subsequent matches with other students. The students and organisers would like to thank the community members for stepping up and providing the children with a challenging afternoon of competition and fun! The battle for supremacy between community members and students was not resolved however until later in the week! At the final bell on the Tuesday afternoon the scores stood even – with one game still in play. To enable a winning team to be determined this final game had to be played out to the end, so it was back to the hall for Education Queensland Guidance Officer Mr Graham King and his opponent Lochlan to conclude their game and resolve the championship title issue. To the great relief of the
community members, Mr King was ultimately victorious ensuring the
adults have taken the title in this first competition. The students
are already looking forward to an opportunity to redeem themselves
and are eagerly awaiting another Community Chess Challenge! |
