State Finals decide the Best of the Best

The Queensland Interschool Championships in Brisbane on 24-25 October brought together 32 school teams from across the state, all winners from the regional championships cycle held throughout the year.

King's Christian College successfully defended its high schools crown, and took the primary schools crown as well. Full results below.

The girls teams finals were held on 26 October, with Somerset College (Gold Coast) winning the high schools and Somerville House (Brisbane) the primary.

Canterbury Junior Chess Club is hosting the Australian Schools Teams Championships at Scotch College in Melbourne on 5-6 December, where Queensland will be represented by our four state finals winners. For details of the interstate opposition (and everything else you might like to know) visit the web site at http://chess.geniusprophecy.com/astc/index.html

State Finals - Treatment of Byes

Where an odd number of teams is competing in the Queensland Interschool Championships, under the Swiss pairing rules the lowest ranked team at the start of each round is given a bye (with the proviso that no team receives more than one bye). A bye is scored as a 4-0 win to that team. The effect is that the team scores four free points, but with its increased score is paired against a higher-ranked team in the following round than would be the case if its round score was less than 4-0.

This has no effect on deciding the overall placegetters, but may affect deciding the highest-placed regional teams.

To avoid any real or perceived disadvantage to regional teams, we are examining options for the treatment or avoidance of byes. These options include, but are not restricted to:-
a. scoring byes as 2-2 rather than 4-0;
b. allowing entry to the next-qualified Brisbane team to avoid an odd number of teams (which may require a closing date one or two weeks prior to the event, by which qualifying teams must accept or decline their invitations to compete, to allow sufficient time for a bye-breaking team to be arranged).

We are also interested if someone can come up with an answer to the following situation. Regional team A clearly gets better results than regional team B in the first 5 rounds. Team A goes into the last round (say) 3 points clear of Team B. Team A gets one of the very top teams in the last round and goes down 4-0. Team B gets one of the easiest teams in the last round and wins 4-0, thus winning the regional prize. This happened to TAS Cairns last year. Remember the system is set up to produce an overall winner, not a regional winner.

Feedback is invited from interested schools to provide ideas on creating a fairer system.

Zonal Finals - Term 3

The results and leading scores (full scores and other data available at www.gardinerchess.com/schools/2009/results/interschoolchess2009.htm) from the final round of the zonal championships are summarised below, with qualifiers for the state finals shown in bold. Note that the premier division is restricted to a maximum of three teams from any one school in 12-team premiers and a maximum of two teams in 6-, 8- or 10-team premiers. The organisers reserve the right to determine whether a premier division will be held in any zone and the number of teams in premier divisions, based upon all practical considerations.

Swiss Perfect free pairing software

Get your intraschool tournaments rated with a copy of the Swiss Perfect computer pairings program.

The program helps administrators run chess tournaments, can be used for submitting results for rating, and provides a range of reports including standings, cross tables, results and ratings performances. Most importantly it instantly carries out the draw for each round of the tournament, which can be anything from just a few players to hundreds.

The owner of Swiss Perfect, Robert Rozycki, has kindly given permission for all schools in Australia to have free use of the relevant state licence.

1. Download the program from http://www.swissperfect.com/download.htm
(click on the blue link "Swiss Perfect 98, build 415b English").
2. Run the downloaded program to install Swiss Perfect.
3. Run Swiss Perfect and enter name and key when prompted:
Name: Queensland Junior Chess
Key: AMSNBU78

All tournament results may be submitted to the Queensland Junior Ratings Officer, Dr David McKinnon, for rating. To do this send all three Swiss Perfect files for the tournament (.ini, .trn and .sco) to qjrl@hotmail.com

Queensland Junior Ratings

The bi-monthly Queensland Junior Rating List undergoes some close attention and analysis on the Gardiner Chess web site at www.www.gardinerchess.com/ratings/2009/ratings2009.htm

You'll find the leaderboards by age, by zone, most active and most improved as well as rating changes by players sorted by school.

Note that the State Finals missed the cut for the November list and will be included in January.

New-Look Web Site

The Gardiner Chess web site has been revamped - see what you think, at www.gardinerchess.com

In particular check the Chess Products for Schools link in the Schools Section for suggested additions to your school chess resources.

Tactical Puzzles for Juniors

There is a simple way your players can improve their tactical understanding and board sight - solve the daily puzzles on the home page at www.gardinerchess.com Each day there are three new puzzles, easy, moderate and difficult (but not too difficult), with hint options.
