Tournament Entries - Internet Portal

Gardiner Chess has developed a new internet-based schools entry portal, allowing direct entry of teams by competing schools (and subsequent amendments or deletions if necessary). The portal is designed to simplify the entry process for schools and streamline the  processing of entries with improved accuracy and efficiency.

The system will be trialled next term for the Far North Queensland and Sunshine Coast zones. If the trial proves successful it will then be rolled out to all zones. Full details will be emailed to FNQ and Suncoast schools shortly.

Round 2 Results

The results and leading scores from the second round (finals rounds for western Queensland) of the zonal championships are summarised below, with qualifiers for the finals premier divisions shown in bold - all schools may enter teams or part teams in the concurrent open divisions of the final round. Note that the premier division is restricted to a maximum of three teams from any one school in 12-team premiers and a maximum of two teams in six, eight or ten-team premiers. The organisers reserve the right to determine whether a premier division will be held in any zone and the number of teams in premier divisions, based upon all practical considerations.

In Brisbane and Gold Coast zones, the teams finishing first to fourth in the premier tournaments qualify for the state finals on 11-12 October. In other zones the winning premier team (secondary and primary) qualifies for the state finals.

Swiss Perfect free pairing software

Get your intraschool tournaments rated with a copy of the Swiss Perfect computer pairings program.

The program helps administrators run chess tournaments, can be used for submitting results for rating, and provides a range of reports including standings, cross tables, results and ratings performances. Most importantly it instantly carries out the draw for each round of the tournament, which can be anything from just a few players to hundreds.

The owner of Swiss Perfect, Robert Rozycki, has kindly given permission for all schools in Australia to have free use of the relevant state licence.

1. Download the program from http://www.swissperfect.com/download.htm
(click on the blue link "Swiss Perfect 98, build 415b English").
2. Run the downloaded program to install Swiss Perfect.
3. Run Swiss Perfect and enter name and key when prompted:
Name: Queensland Junior Chess
Key: AMSNBU78

All tournament results may be submitted to the Queensland Junior Ratings Officer, Dr David McKinnon, for rating. To do this send all three Swiss Perfect files for the tournament (suffixed .ini, .trn and .sco) to qjrl@hotmail.com

Sponsorship

The Queensland Interschools Teams Chess Championship is now a truly statewide event. This presents a unique opportunity for potential sponsors. We are currently seeking a naming rights sponsor for the statewide competition as a whole, and also sponsors for the local regions. Sponsorships will enable us to continue to develop chess in Queensland at an accelerated pace. Please make initial contact with Graeme Gardiner at 5522 7221 or ggardiner@gardinerchess.com.

Chess Coaching in Regional Schools

Many schools in South East Queensland are now receiving ongoing chess coaching programmes for their students. Gardiner Chess is keen to see schools in all regions of Queensland also benefit from ongoing chess coaching programmes. Accordingly, arrangements have been put in place to make IQ Chess franchises available in regional areas of Queensland, based upon official school regions. IQ Chess is the franchise arm of Gardiner Chess. Substantial resources and training are provided to franchisees.

The first franchise was launched in Cairns early last year.

Chess Resources

Add a selection of chess coaching resources to your school library shelves, to help your players lift their game. A comprehensive range of sets, boards, clocks, books, DVDs, videos and software is available from Gardiner Chess - see www.gardinerchess.com under the Chess Shop tab.

If you need any advice on the purchase of chess resources, please phone Graeme Gardiner on 5522 7221.
