5. Team members must be bona fide students at the school entering the team

6. Players and reserves are to be entered, and to play, in their teams in order of playing strength, which may not be varied during the championships. Queensland Junior ratings are indicative of playing strength unless there are valid reasons for a school to believe that a player’s current rating does not reflect the player’s true strength. In such cases the school may request permission from the Chief Arbiter to vary the team playing order accordingly, provided that the rating difference involved is not more than 100.

Tournament Director

7. The Chief Arbiter for the championships is Ian Murray.

8. Questions or concerns during the course of the tournament should be raised with the Chief Arbiter.

Registration

9. Schools must forward entry forms, with details of players and reserves, by mail, email or fax to reach Gardiner Chess by Tuesday 7 October. The entry fee is $48 per team, payable on invoice after the event,

10. Final registration of teams, with any late changes, will take place at 8:30am on Saturday 11 October at the venue.

11. Upon registration, the playing order for each team will be confirmed.

Reserves

12. Reserves may be freely used throughout the tournament.

13. The Chief Arbiter should be notified of the intention to replace a player with a reserve not later than 15 minutes before the start of the round in which the substitution is to take place.

14. When a reserve is substituted, the reserve player’s rating will determine on which board he plays, so that order of playing strength is maintained in accordance with paragraph 6. If the reserve player is unrated, he shall play on board 4, with the other team members moving up one board if necessary.

Format

15. Each championship, high schools and primary schools, will be played as a six-round team-roster Swiss tournament.

Playing times

16. Round 1 will commence at 9.15am. For Rounds 5-6 to be played on Sunday, play will commence at 8.30am.

17. Players should be seated and ready for play five minutes before the scheduled commencement time for each round.  Announcements to the players will be made at this time.

Time Controls

18. The time control for the whole game will be 60 minutes per player with an additional ten-second increment per move from the first move. Each session playing time is estimated at 2¼ hours.

Recording moves

19. Players must record their games on the score sheets provided.  As is usual, players need not record moves when they have less than five minutes remaining of their allotted time.

FIDE Laws

20. The FIDE Laws of Chess will apply (available from the Info page at www.caq.org.au)

Results

21. At the conclusion of each round, the captain of each team must advise the arbiter of the results for all boards. Result sheets will be provided for this purpose.

22. Players score one point for a win and half a point for a draw.

23. The team which scores most points at the conclusion of the tournament will be declared the winner.  Should there be a tie, the winner will be decided by applying the team tie-break procedures currently in force.

Presentation of prizes

24. Prizes for both the secondary and primary winners will be awarded at a single presentation ceremony, expected to be at 2.00pm on Sunday.

25. All players are expected to attend the presentations. Random draw prizes, donated by Gardiner Chess, will be drawn at that time – winners must be present to receive their prizes.
