Further to the flyer mailed to all regional schools at the start of term, announcing the interschools chess program for this year, the Sunshine Coast regional interschool championships formerly organised by Suncoast Chess Club have now been incorporated in the statewide circuit conducted by Gardiner Chess in partnership with the Chess Association of Queensland.

All schools in the Sunshine Coast education district are invited to compete in the Suncoast regional championships, the regional zonal events in the official Queensland statewide interschools circuit.

The zonal championships will be run over two rounds, each separate primary and secondary tournaments run in two divisions, Premier and Open. The Premier is restricted to the top teams (of four players), based on player ratings, in Round 1, with a promotion/relegation system operating in round 2. All other teams are eligible for the Open.

The teams finishing in first place in round two of the premier division, primary and secondary, will be invited to contest the state finals, with the winners representing Queensland at the national finals. The state finals - the Queensland Interschool Championships - to be held in October, will be contested by the qualifying schools from each region - Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan/Albert/Beaudesert, Darling Downs, Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay/South Burnett, Central Queensland, Mackay/Whitsunday, North Queensland, Far North Queensland, Southern Downs (Stanthorpe), South Queensland (Roma), South Queensland West (Charleville), Central Queensland West (Longreach) and North Quensland West (Mt Isa).

The first round of the Suncoast zonal tournaments is being held at Lake Kawana Community Centre, Bokarina (see location details and map), on Tuesday 27 March, with round two to be held on Tuesday 18 September.

All schools in the Sunshine Coast education district are invited to enter the championships. Medals will be awarded to the members of the teams finishing first, second and third in each division.

Copies of the entry form and tournament details are published under the Suncoast Interschool Championships header on the Coming Events page at www.caq.org.au The tournaments are suitable for children of all playing strengths - novice players are especially welcome.

Players should bring their own lunches and snacks. Tea/coffee facilities will be available for adults. For safety reasons, a teacher or other adult must accompany each school contingent. Wearing of school uniforms is encouraged, but is not mandatory.

Please make absolutely sure that you get your team entries in by mail, email or fax by Friday 23 March to allow time to arrange sufficient tales and chairs, catering etc. Entries cannot be accepted on the day.

Please feel free to call if you have any questions on the championships. Details of other services available for schools and junior players are available on the Internet:-
