Arbiter’s Report

[Ian Murray]

Last stop along the way on my Brisbane-Cairns-Brisbane 3700km road trip was Gympie for the first round of the Wide Bay Burnett regional championships. Despite the late withdrawal of two teams, there were still 114 players filling the hall at Gympie South State School, representing the distinct geographical areas in the region – Bundaberg, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, South Burnett and Cooloola.

High Schools

By round two Aldridge High 1 (Maryborough) and Urangan High Red (Hervey Bay) shared the lead, closely followed by Kepnock High (Bundaberg), James Nash High (Cooloola) and St Mary’s College (Maryborough). With a 4/4 result Kepnock took a narrow lead after round three, half a point clear from Aldridge and Urangan with Kingaroy High (South Burnett) moving into equal fourth with St Mary’s and Aldridge 2. In round four Aldridge 1 moved into the lead over Kepnock, a lead to which they clung tenaciously through till the end while Kepnock pulled out all stops trying unsuccessfully to claw back the lead. The battle for third place was equally close, with Urangan holding off successive challenges from Kingaroy, St Mary’s then James Nash. Leading final scores: Aldridge One 20˝, Kepnock 20, Urangan 17˝, James Nash 17, Kingaroy and St Mary’s 15.

Primary Schools

Wallaville 1 (Bundaberg) stamped its mark early, scoring 4/4 in round one, as did Gympie South Blue (Cooloola) before fading away, ahead of Norville (Bundaberg) on 3. After round two it was Wallaville 7 and Norville 6˝, with Gympie South Gold moving into third on 5˝. Wallaville skipped away in round three to lead Norville and Gympie Gold by 2˝, then Wallaville 2, One Mile (Cooloola) and South Burnett Catholic College. It was still Wallaville over Norville by 2˝ after round four, as the others stayed in touch but were struggling. In round five Wallaville extended its lead to 3˝, as Gympie Gold closed to within 1˝ of Norville and staying there in round six. Wallaville managed only a win and a draw this round, to go into the final round with a two-point buffer over Norville, which was enough. Leading final scores: Wallaville One 22˝, Norville 20, Gympie Gold 17˝, Wallaville Two 16, SBCC 14.

TOURNAMENT CONDITIONS

1.   Format

Each tournament will be played as a team event in two divisions, Premier and Open. The number of players per team is normally four but teams of less than four players may enter.

The Premier Division is limited to the top six teams, with a promotion and relegation system in place. In future rounds the teams finishing fourth, fifth and sixth will be relegated to the Open Division in the next round, replaced by the top-finishing teams in the Open (with any ties broken by countback).  The winning team in Round 2 of the Premier Division qualifies for the Queensland Interschool Championships in October.

This being the inaugural tournament introducing the system, the Premier Divisions, secondary and primary, will be the teams filling the top places in last year’s championships, viz:

High Schools

Primary Schools

James Nash SHS

Wallaville SS (2 teams)

Urangan SHS

Norville SS

Kepnock SHS

Gympie South SS

Aldridge SHS

Thabeban SS (2 teams)

Isis District SHS

St Mary’s College

Should any eligible school fail to enter a team (or a full complement of qualified teams), the next-qualified school will be promoted to the Premier.

All other players are eligible for the Open Division. The number of Open teams is unlimited.

Should there be insufficient entries for two divisions in a tournament, the event will be conducted as one Open tournament, with the top-finishing teams qualifying for the Premier Division in the next round.

Each division will be played as a six-round or seven-round (seven if time permits) tournament under Swiss pairing rules (which, briefly, pair all players against different opponents from different teams each round so that, as far as possible, players on equal scores play each other and play an equal number of games with the white and black pieces).  Every team plays in every round – win or lose.

Time controls are 30 minutes per game, using chess clocks in the Premier and adjudication if necessary after 30 minutes in the Open to decide game results.

2.  Scoring

Players will score one point for a win, a half-point for a draw and zero for a loss. Team scores are the totals of points scored by team members, accumulating each round.

3.   Prizes

Team prizes – Medals for members of each team finishing first, second and third

4.  Ratings

For pairing purposes the January 2006 issue of the Queensland Junior Rating List will be used, published on the CAQ web site at www.caq.org.au  Results will be submitted for rating.
