Report The response to the inaugural regional championships in Mount Isa was somewhat disappointing, considering the number of schools within striking distance, but now we have a foot in the door things should improve next year. Only three schools entered teams – Good Shepherd Catholic College High School, Spinifex State College Junior Campus and Townview State School – for a total of 25 players. With only five primary school players, the event was run as a single tournament over eight rounds, with the best high school and primary school team results determining the division placings. Spinifex Kings set the early pace, holding a half-point lead over Good Shepherd 1 for the first two rounds until hitting the wall in round three, when Good Shepherd 1 grabbed a three-point lead. Townview surprisingly was running third, ahead of the other three high school teams (Spinifex Knights and Good Shepherd 2 and 3). After round four Good Shepherd 1 had extended its lead to 13, 4˝ points clear from Kings and Knights a half-point behind. Kings narrowed the gap slightly in round five – Good Shepherd 15˝, Kings 11˝ - then Knights 9˝ and and Good Shepherd 2 and Townview on 8˝. The gap closed further in round six – Good Shepherd 17˝, Kings 15˝ - as the others fell out of contention. Good Shepherd shot clear in round six to lead by an unassailable 4˝ points and finished the event with an impressive win. Final scores: Good Shepherd 1 25; Spinifex Kings 18˝; Spinifex Knights 14˝; Good Shepherd 2 13˝; Townview 1 13; Good Shepherd 3 10; Townview 2 (one-man team) 4˝. Qualifiers for the state finals in Brisbane in October are Good Shepherd Catholic College (secondary) and Townview State (primary). Results |
