Report The inaugural regional championships in Longreach drew teams from only two schools, Longreach State and Longreach School of Distance Education (its players from properties as far afield as Winton, Richmond and Julia Creek). Still there were 40 keen young players in the field, some of whom had played before in Townsville and Rockhampton prior to the outback being added to the circuit. With only five high school players, the event was run as a single tournament over eight rounds, with the best high school and primary school team results determining the division placings. The Distance Ed High 1 team, with its tournament-experienced players, not surprisingly led throughout and won with a final score of 25/32. Interest centred on the top primary teams, Distance Ed P1 and P3 and Longreach State Freedom Fighters. After round four P1 on 10 led with P3 and FF on 9. At round 5 it was P1 12½, FF 11½ and P3 11. By round six P1 held a 15½ lead over P3 13, with FF joined by P4 on 12½. After round seven P1 held an unassailable 18½ lead over P3 15½, with Longreach SS Tornados moving into third on 15 ahead of P4 14½ and FF 14. A last-round recovery saw FF regain second place with 17 behind P1 on 20½, while P3 took third with 16½ ahead of P4 and Tornados with 15½. Longreach School of Distance Education qualifies for the state finals in Brisbane in October with both its secondary and primary teams.
