Arbiter’s Report
(Ian Murray)

The championships moved to a new venue this year - Slade Point Community Hall, some 10km from central Mackay. The hall was well-suited to the occasion, in a bushland setting with more than enough room outdoors for exuberant young players to run off steam between rounds. Not everything went according to plan however – heavy rain for most of the day kept everyone indoors.

High Schools

Last year a school camp depleted the Sarina High teams, but there was no such interference this time around – the Year 12 players in its A Team led the charge from go to whoa. After a perfect score from the first two rounds, the team managed only 50% in round three, allowing Mackay North High 2 and Sarina B to close the gap a little although still three points adrift. Round four saw Sarina A and North 2 each score 3/4, maintaining the margin while Sarina B slipped a point further behind. In round five Sarina A extended its lead to four points ahead of North 2, with Sarina B still a further point behind. Sarina C and North 1 followed another point behind, with Carlisle Christian College’s two teams struggling to stay in touch at their first interschool outing. From round 6 it became a rout, with the A team stretching its lead to six points (while North 1 leap-frogged into second place) and then seven in the final round. Sarina High has already commenced fund-raising for the trip to Brisbane for the state finals.

Primary Schools

Slade Point 1 looked set to take the event yet again, with 7/8 from the first two rounds albeit not alone – Andergrove A shared the lead. In round three Slade managed only one point and watched Andergrove and Victoria Park 4 grab a two-point lead. After round four it was still Andergrove A and Park 4 locked together, now one point clear of Slade 1 and three points ahead of Park 1 and Glenella. A perfect score in round five gave Andergrove a two-point margin, with Slade moving into second and Park 1 third as Park 4 faltered. By round six it was Andergove by a half-point from Slade as the tension mounted; all other teams were now out of contention. In the final round the leaders each scored 2/4, maintaining the status quo and breaking Slade’s long-standing hegemony.

Entry form

TOURNAMENT CONDITIONS

1.   Format

Each tournament will be played as a team event in two divisions, Premier and Open. The number of players per team is normally four but teams of less than four players may enter.

The Premier Division is limited to the top six teams, with a promotion and relegation system in place. In future rounds the teams finishing fourth, fifth and sixth will be relegated to the Open Division in the next round, replaced by the teams finishing first, second and third in Open (with any ties broken by countback).  The winning team in Round 2 of the Premier Division qualifies for the Queensland Interschool Championships in October.

This being the inaugural tournament introducing the system, the Premier Divisions, secondary and primary, will be the teams filling the first six places in last year’s championships, viz:

High Schools

Primary Schools

Sarina SHS

Slade Point SS (4 teams)

Pioneer SHS (3 teams)

Moranbah SS

Mackay North SHS

Beaconsfield SS

Bowen SHS

Should any eligible school fail to enter a team (or a full complement of qualified teams), the next-qualified school will be promoted to the Premier. Next-qualified schools are Mirani SHS, Mackay North SHS and Sarina SHS (secondary) and Fitzgerald SS and Moranbah SS (primary).

All other players are eligible for the Open Division. The number of Open teams is unlimited.

Each division will be played as a six-round or seven-round (seven if time permits) tournament under Swiss pairing rules (which, briefly, pair all players against different opponents from different teams each round so that, as far as possible, players on equal scores play each other and play an equal number of games with the white and black pieces).  Every team plays in every round – win or lose.

Time controls are 30 minutes per game, using chess clocks in the Premier and adjudication if necessary after 30 minutes in the Open to decide game results.

2.      Scoring

Players will score one point for a win, a half-point for a draw and zero for a loss. Team scores are the totals of points scored by team members, accumulating each round.

3.    Prizes

Team prizes – Medals for members of each team finishing first, second and third
