Arbiter’s Report

 [Ian Murray]

An even 100 players converged on Trinity Anglican School in Cairns for Round 1 of the FNQ zonal championships, marginally down on last year but still a gratifying number.

High Schools

The TAS team led by Travis Dragojlo hit the ground running, scoring 8/8 in the first two rounds to lead Joshua Hartigan’s TAS team by two points. St Mary’s Catholic College 1 were on 5, St Mary’s 2 and Woree High 1 on 3, Mareeba High and Woree 2 on 2½ and Philip Pearson’s TAS team on 2. Dragojlo lost three games and Hartigan won three in round three to share the lead, two points ahead of St Mary’s 1 and Woree 1. In round four Dragojlo clawed back to lead Hartigan by one point and St Mary’s 1 by two, with the others starting to lose touch with the leaders, although Pearson scored 4/4 to gain some ground. Round five, and St Mary’s 4/4 score gave them the lead with a two-point edge over Dragojlo and Hartigan. St Mary’s chalked up another 3 in round six to take them to 17/24, a very handy lead over Hartigan (15½) and Dragojlo (14) going into the final round. They maintained the momentum to win – final scores St Mary’s One 20, Hartigan 17½, Dragojlo 17, Pearson 14½, St Mary’s Two 13, Mareeba 12, Woree One 10 and Woree Two 8.

Primary Schools

With James Lawson at the helm, the top-seeded TAS team was unstoppable, leading the other 16 teams all the way – Lawson and Marcus Buschel scored 5/7 but were well buttressed by Henry Harding and Nicholas Jones, each with a perfect 7/7. St Andrew’s Catholic College and St Gerard Majella stayed in touch up till round five, when SGM was joined in second place by Madeleine Wade’s TAS team, jumping from seventh. After round six Wade was in clear second on 17, with SGM on 16½ and St Andrew’s 15. St Andrew’s came back in the final round to take second place on 19 ahead of Wade on 18½.

TOURNAMENT CONDITIONS

1.   Format

Each tournament will be played as a team event in two divisions, Premier and Open. The number of players per team is normally four but teams of less than four players may enter.

The Premier Division is limited to the top six high school teams and top eight primary school teams, with a promotion and relegation system in place. In future rounds the high school teams finishing fourth, fifth and sixth and primary teams finishing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth will be relegated to the Open Division in the next round, replaced by the top-finishing teams in the Open (with any ties broken by countback).  The winning team in Round 2 of the Premier Division qualifies for the Queensland Interschool Championships in October.

This being the inaugural tournament introducing the system, the Premier Divisions, secondary and primary, will be the teams filling the top places in last year’s championships, viz:

High Schools

Primary Schools

TAS (2 teams)

TAS (4 teams)

Innisfail SHS (2 teams)

Hambledon SS

St Andrew’s

Woree SS

Atherton SHS

St Gerard Majella

St Andrew’s

Should any eligible school fail to enter a team (or a full complement of qualified teams), the next-qualified school will be promoted to the Premier.

All other players are eligible for the Open Division. The number of Open teams is unlimited.

Should there be insufficient entries for two divisions in a tournament, the event will be conducted as one Open tournament, with the top-finishing teams qualifying for the Premier Division in the next round.

Each division will be played as a six-round or seven-round (seven if time permits) tournament under Swiss pairing rules (which, briefly, pair all players against different opponents from different teams each round so that, as far as possible, players on equal scores play each other and play an equal number of games with the white and black pieces).  Every team plays in every round – win or lose.

Time controls are 30 minutes per game, using chess clocks in the Premier and adjudication if necessary after 30 minutes in the Open to decide game results.

2.  Scoring

Players will score one point for a win, a half-point for a draw and zero for a loss. Team scores are the totals of points scored by team members, accumulating each round.

3.    Prizes

Team prizes – Medals for members of each team finishing first, second and third
