ROUND 1

DATE

Monday 6 March 2006

VENUE

PAC, Rockhampton State High School

Campbell St, Rockhampton

While only 74 players in all contested the championships, this leg was actually the most widespread geographically – we had teams from as far afield as Emerald, Moura, Gladstone and Yeppoon converging on Rockhampton to challenge the local schools.

High Schools

Gladstone High 1 and Yeppoon High set the early pace with 4/4 in round one, then Gladstone skipped clear on 8/8 ahead of Yeppoon 6 and St Stephen’s, Gladstone 2 and 3, and Grammar on 5. Round three, and Gladstone 1 was still cruising out in front on 12/12, comfortably ahead of St Stephen’s on 8, then Gladstone 3 on 7½ and on 7 Gladstone 2, Yeppoon and Grammar. Gladstone 1 drops its first point in round four, as the other leaders faltered to allow Marist College Emerald Gold and Yeppoon to share second, still five points off the pace. Fortunes changed again in round five, as Gladstone 3 (12½) and Gladstone 2 (11½) move into the minor placings, as Gladstone 1 moves to 19 and could almost go home now and still win. Yeppoon, MCE, Rocky High and Grammar are still within reach of silver and bronze. After round 6 it’s Gladstone 1 on 21, MCE Gold on 15 and Gladstone 3 on 14½, Yeppoon on 13 and Gladstone 2 and Grammar on 12½. Gladstone 1 were easing up in the final stretch, finishing on 23/28. The battle for the minor places saw MCE Gold finish on 17 and Yeppoon on 16.

Primary Schools

With only six teams from three schools in the primary schools tournament, and three of those under-strength, it looked as though the two experienced teams from Gladstone West State would be indomitable. And so it proved to be. West Lions led throughout to finish with 23/28, while West Tigers slipped from second to third temporarily after rounds four and five, to finish with silver on 12½ ahead of St Stephen’s Gladstone 0n 12. The three three-player teams from Grammar finished on 11, 9½ and 9.

TOURNAMENT CONDITIONS

1.   Format

Each tournament will be played as a team event in two divisions, Premier and Open. The number of players per team is normally four but teams of less than four players may enter.

The Premier Division is limited to the top six teams, with a promotion and relegation system in place. In future rounds the teams finishing fourth, fifth and sixth will be relegated to the Open Division in the next round, replaced by the top-finishing teams in the Open (with any ties broken by countback).  The winning team in Round 2 of the Premier Division qualifies for the Queensland Interschool Championships in October.

This being the inaugural tournament introducing the system, the Premier Divisions, secondary and primary, will be the teams filling the top places in last year’s championships, viz:

High Schools

Primary Schools

RGS

Gladstone West SS (2 teams)

Yeppoon SHS

Kin Kora SS

Gladstone SHS (3 teams)

Yarwun SS

Moura SHS

Moura SS (2 teams)

Should any eligible school fail to enter a team (or a full complement of qualified teams), the next-qualified school will be promoted to the Premier.

All other players are eligible for the Open Division. The number of Open teams is unlimited.

Should there be insufficient entries for two divisions in a tournament, the event will be conducted as one Open tournament, with the top-finishing teams qualifying for the Premier Division in the next round.

Each division will be played as a six-round or seven-round (seven if time permits) tournament under Swiss pairing rules (which, briefly, pair all players against different opponents from different teams each round so that, as far as possible, players on equal scores play each other and play an equal number of games with the white and black pieces).  Every team plays in every round – win or lose.

Time controls are 30 minutes per game, using chess clocks in the Premier and adjudication if necessary after 30 minutes in the Open to decide game results.

2.  Scoring

Players will score one point for a win, a half-point for a draw and zero for a loss. Team scores are the totals of points scored by team members, accumulating each round.

3.   Prizes

Team prizes – Medals for members of each team finishing first, second and third

4.   Ratings

For pairing purposes the January 2006 issue of the Queensland Junior Rating List will be used, published on the CAQ web site at www.caq.org.au  Results will be submitted for rating.
