High Schools and Primary Schools
Arbiter’s Report - Round 1 [Ian Murray]
Very encouraging was the increase in numbers over previous years, with high school and primary school fields up to 120 and 292 respectively.
High schools
Brisbane Grammar announced its intentions early – 2006 is the BGS year. Grammar 1 led the Premier Division from the start, although Churchie 1 stayed within a point up till round four. Grammar then skipped away, to finish on 23˝/28, 3˝ points ahead of Churchie. The next four places – Grammar 2, Churchie 2, Nudgee and Grammar 3 – were never in touch but have a chance of redemption next term. St Laurence’s and Churchie 3 will be relegated to the Open Division next term, replaced by the winning teams promoted from the Open this time. In the Open Division it was Churchie, Faith Lutheran and Cleveland High making the early running, until St Laurence’s came from behind in round five to join FLC as leaders. By round six it was SLC 19˝, Churchie 19 and FLC 17˝. After round seven SLC and FLC (20˝) led Churchie by a point. In the final round SLC gained the upper hand to win with 23˝/32, ahead of FLC 22˝ and Churchie 21˝. St Laurence’s and Faith earned promotion to the Premier Division next term. Results:
Primary Schools
In the Premier Division Indooroopilly, Nundah 1 and Bardon set the early pace, sharing the lead after two rounds. In round three Churchie 1 leapfrogged into a one-point lead ahead of Indooroopilly and Churchie, extending their lead to 2˝ in round four. Still Churchie by 2˝ over Nundah in round five, with the other ten teams now out of contention. The front runners oth had perfect scores in the final round, to finish with 23˝ and 20, and Indooroopilly third on 17˝. The four teams finishing 9th – 12th (Chapel Hill, Sunnybank Hills, Nundah 2 and Indooroopilly 2) find themselves relegated to the Open Division next term.
The Open Division this time was a titanic struggle between Bardon 1, Bardon 2, Fernvale 1, St Paul’s and Boondall. Bardon 1 were on top when it counted, finishing with 21 ahead of St Paul’s and Fernvale 20˝ and Boondall 20. All four will be promoted to the Premier next term.

TOURNAMENT CONDITIONS
1. Format Each tournament will be played as a team event in two divisions, Premier Division and Open Division. The number of players per team is normally four but teams of less than four players may enter. The Premier Division is limited to the top twelve primary teams and top eight secondary teams, after promotion and relegation from the previous round (i.e. Round 3 of the 2005 Championships), namely -
Should a qualifying school not enter this round (or not enter its full complement of qualifying teams) the next-highest scoring Open team will be promoted to Premier. All other players are eligible for the Open Division. The number of Open teams is unlimited. In Term 2 (Round 2) and Term 3 (Round 3) the promotion/relegation system will continue to apply, where the four lowest-scoring primary teams and two lowest-scoring secondary teams in the Premier will be relegated to the Open and replaced by the top-scoring Open teams (with any ties broken by countback). The four top-scoring Premier teams from Round 3 will be invited to contest the Queensland Interschool Championships on 14-15 October. Each division will be played as a six-round or seven-round (seven if time permits) tournament under Swiss pairing rules (which, briefly, pair all players against different opponents from different teams each round so that, as far as possible, players on equal scores play each other and play an equal number of games with the white and black pieces). Every team plays in every round – win or lose. Time controls are 30 minutes per game, using chess clocks in the Premier and adjudication if necessary after 30 minutes in the Open to decide game results. Team members must play in order of playing strength so that board prizes will be awarded correctly. Reserves may be substituted for absent players, ensuring that teams remain in order of playing strength.
2. Scoring Players will score one point for a win, a half-point for a draw and zero for a loss. Team scores are the totals of points scored by team members, accumulating each round. 3. PrizesTeam prizes – Medals for members of each team finishing first, second and third Individual prizes – Medals for best individual performances
4. Ratings Division allocations will be based on the January 2006 issue of the Queensland Junior Rating List, published on the CAQ web site at www.caq.org.au Results will be submitted for rating. The latest rating lists will be used for Rounds 2 and 3.
5. Entry fee $10 per player including GST. If entering after 11 March add $10 late fee.
Early-bird discount – enter all three rounds (Terms 1, 2 and 3) now for $95 per team including GST payable in advance.
. Schools unable to pay the full entry fee may apply in writing for a reduced fee, according to circumstances. No teams will be turned away because of cost.
