Kevin Casey won the
Queensland Lightning Championship after a play-off, with
Gene Nakauchi 2nd and Patrick Byrom 3rd.
Here's a game from the Queensland Lightning in the final round (9) - submitted by Kevin Casey - against Bruce Williams, the game which got Kevin into the play-off. It features a deep queen sac, followed by a neat knight sac, after which White is a whole queen up, but totally helpless to prevent mate.
White: Bruce Williams
Black: Kevin Casey
Giuoco Piano
1.e4 e5; 2. Nf3 Nc6; 3.Bc4 Bc5;
4.d3 d6; 5.0-0 Nf6; 6.Bg5 h6; 7.Bh4 g5; 8.Bg3 h5!?; 9.Nxg5
h4!; 10.Nxf7 hxg3!!; 11.Nxd8
Now the fun begins......Bg4!
12.Qd2 Nd4!
Now Black threatens ...Ne2+,
13.Kh1 Rxh2 mate. Note that 13.h3 fails to the pretty
...Ne2+, 14.Kh1 Rxh3+! 15.gxh3 Bf3 mate!
13.Nc3 Nf3+!!
This was the other threat!
White must take, since if 14.Kh1 Rxh2 is mate.
14.gxf3 Bxf3
0-1
Now White is totally helpless
against the simple threat of ...gxh2 mate. He can't play
15.fxg3 because the f-pawn is pinned, and 15.hxg3 loses to
...Rh1 mate. There is no defence.
Kevin comments: I have actually
known about this tricky queen sac line since I was 11 years
old. If one looks at the top right-hand corner of page 41
of my book Australian Chess Brilliancies, you
will also find it mentioned there! Every junior player who
plays the Giuoco Piano should familiarize themselves
with this amazing tactical trap.
