Junior Masters 2007

We have changed the format of the Junior Masters so that the players start and (we hope!) finish earlier. Additionally they will have the tournament hall entirely to themselves which should improve their concentration without any younger players around to distract them. The time controls for all games are 75 mins plus 30 secs a move.

The rounds start each Monday at 4:00 pm with an optional half hour advanced coaching session with IM Peter Froehlich. Currently there are nearly 40 players and they have been sorted into two groups according to their playing strength.

As in previous Junior Masters tournaments, they are expected to enter their games into the chess database on the computer and then approach either IM Froehlich (right) or Nicole Kunze also from Germany for analysis of their game, alongside their opponent.

WIM Alexandra Jule (left) has been travelling the world this term, representing Australia in the World Juniors in Turkey and playing plenty of tournaments in England, the Netherlands and in the Commonwealth Championships in India.

Well done to Sebastian Jule for winning the Junior Masters ahead of Daniel Ford. Sebastian has been the biggest improver amongst Gold Coast Juniors this year, winning the Club Championship, President's Cup and Fischerandom tournaments in quick succession. He won't find the junior masters in term 4 easy though, as most of the strong players from the Ruth Coxhill Memorial will be back.

There were exciting finishes to both the A grade and B grade of the term 2 Junior Masters competitions on the final night.

The young players were fortunate to receive a 40 minute lecture from Grandmaster Ian Rogers, and then post game analysis from Rogers, IM Peter Froehlich and WIM Alex Jule.

Grade A Grade B
In the A grade comp, Jonas Muller won his game against Shaun Mah fairly quickly. Daniel Ford, who needed to win to force a play-off, was a pawn down against Keishu Nagano for a long time, and in desperate time trouble. But he continued calmly until an opportunity arose, and engineered a win out of nothing. There followed a two game lightning play-off won convincingly by Daniel. He has now won the Junior Masters on four separate occasions over four years. Well done Daniel! Alex Stahnke came third on 5/7, just a point behind the winners.
In B grade, Martin Jack deservedly won the event on 6.5/7, from Daniel Lapitan on 6, Bradley Begaud on 5 and Zac Clarkson on 4.5. Zac had a big effect on the final results by holding Daniel Lapitan to a draw in the final round.

Unfortunately we have no photos of the winners in this grade.

The term three junior masters commences on Monday 16 July. If you are keen to become a young champion, don't miss it. Indicative minimum rating QJ 800.

Term 1 Junior Masters concluded with a big night at the chess centre.

The evening commenced with an enthralling lecture by Moulthun Ly (pictured right), in which he told the story of his progress from the 2006 Gold Coast Open, in which he scored 3.5/7 through to the World Open in Pennsylvania a few days later where he scored an IM norm and earned US$6,500. He described how he went on to Holland and gained his second IM norm, and played through a few of his best games.

After the lecture the players from all 3 groups from the Junior Masters played in a lightning event, and were joined by Moulthun, GM Dejan Antic (below left) and IM Leonid Sandler (below right), who is holidaying on the Gold Coast.

Other adults like Amir Karibasic, Axel Stahnke, Joe Delmastro and Hans Muller also joined in. There were 40 participants in this event.
