Queensland Girls’ Chess Championships 2006
Report by Tony Powell
A small but classy field of girls competed over the weekend for the State Titles, which this year were held at Chancellor State College and hosted by the Suncoast Chess Club.
There were no surprises in Rounds 1 and 2, but in Rd 3 in a pivotal game Molly McGarity had a win against Jessica Kinder and Ulani Powell (786) a win against Leteisha Simmonds (898).
In Rd 4 Jessica came right back. From a strong position in the end game, but running out of time she secured a draw with Alex Jule. Leteisha (898) had a good win in her game with Abbie Kanagarajah (989) and Alannah Byrne a win against a higher rated Portia Tyle from the Sunshine Coast.
Rds 5 and 6 went with the top seeds but we saw a fine game from Abbie against Molly, with Molly eventually prevailing.
