Gold Coast - Term 4 Report

Gene Nakauchi has put in another awesome performance in the Super Junior Masters, scoring 8/8 against most of the top juniors on the Gold Coast.

Gene has been dominant in this event right throughout 2006: Term 1 1st with 7.5/9, Term 2 2nd (behind guest adult Craig Duxbury) with 6/8, Term 3 1st with 8/9 and Term 4 1st with 8/8. Extremely impressive!

Molly McGarity also put in a very impressive performance scoring 6/8, two points ahead of the third placegetters Brendan Baker, Eric Ng and Liam McGarity. Keith Chan also performed well above his rating.

In the Junior Masters, Tomotaka Onoda came through with a series of good results towards the end, to snatch victory with a win over Curtis Jack, to win by a point on 6.5/8. Curtis, Alex Arase and Zac Clarkson faltered towards the end. Kaidon Anderson, Zac Clarkson, Kenji Nakauchi, Sabin Karibasic and Melanie Karibasic were big improvers during the event.

Happy winners Kenji Nakauchi, Tomo Onoda and Gene Nakauchi - the others unfortunately missed the presentation
Alex Jule demonstrates her baseball handling technique to Robert Shinnie while her brother Seb hides behind a cricket bat - of course they were also showing their support for the Junior Masters . . .

Brisbane Young Champions Gold Coast Junior & Super Junior Masters

The success of the Junior Masters program on the Gold Coast has encouraged us to start a similar one in Brisbane - namely the Brisbane Young Champions.  This program is being held at Café Checocho, 69 Hardgrave Road, West End. Owners of the café, Halim Nataprawira and Birgit Stein, have kindly made this venue available to us. Our coach Phachara Wongwichit is running the competition and, as in the Gold Coast model, is providing after-chess analysis to the players.

In term 2 the Gold Coast Super Juniors had two strong adults in their midst - Craig Duxbury and Axel Stahnke - who have bravely consented to become sacrificial lambs! This strengthened the field even further and added great interest to the players. Because the number of players has grown so steadily, we divided the Junior Masters into two grades according to their ratings to give them closer games. The players in the competitions for Term 2 were:

Super Junior Masters Junior Masters Junior Masters A Brisbane Young Champions
Daniel Barrett Alexander Arase Zac Clarkson Jack Brailsford
Kieton Beilby Daniel Arase Rhys Davies Trent Dalgleish
Craig Duxbury Keith Chan Jay Kaspar Liam Gunn-Schrader
Daniel Ford Caleb Eriksson Danielle Kinder Yarran Gunn-Schrader

Leoma Lee Aki Matsui Henry Leef Yi Liu

Alex Stahnke Erich Ng Joshua Radford Alexander O'Flynn
Axel Stahnke Robert Shinnie Matthew Radford Daniel Posner
Cameron Thompson Brody Seignior Jonathan Ringrose
Kantley Wu Luke Toda Leteisha Simmonds

The Super Juniors play a ten player round robin. Players in this competition cannot miss a game; we merely re-schedule their game in the event of sickness or through unavailability.

In term 2 our highly-experienced coaching team included IM Peter Froehlich, who has recently joined Gardiner Chess, having coached for some years in Melbourne, and Toshi Kimura.
