Humble Pawn Teams Event, 2006

Final Results

General information

The Humble Pawn Teams event is with us again. The Humble Pawn, pictured above, was turned out of a lump of timber cut from a rogue tree, which had to be felled because it was threatening the chess centre in 2003 - in fact a large branch came through the verandah roof on the second day we opened the centre and further falls very close by convinced us to have it cut down.

Kerry Corker is running the event this year, with some novel ideas. Our main aim is to try and get players in the teams to feel a real sense of ownership of the teams, and to run the event in 2007 throughout the year, rather than just in November and December. Kerry has introduced board prizes, and teams can have a bit of fun by tranfers, transfer deadlines, team ownership and sponsorship.

Another innovation from Kerry was the use of Remi Broadway and his TV camera on the opening evening. Check out this video in its uncut state:

This year the teams are (with team captains in brackets): Easts (Axel Stahnke), Nerang Knights (Robert Shinnie), Burleigh Bishops (Bernie Saavedra), Robina Rooks (Steve Carratt), Norths (Catherine Wright) and Mudgeeraba (John O'Brien). There are 8 players per team. Teams are being encouraged to have their own team names, mascots and uniforms.

As usual with this event, the results are decided primarily on team points (2 points for a team win, and 1 point for a team draw), with individual totals used as countback. Another of Kerry's novel ideas is each team will receive a bonus team point for each round where they have 100% attendance. Team captains will have their entry fee refunded if they have 100% attendance in every round.

Week 1 Report

The results on the first night were very close in 4 of the 6 team match-ups, but reigning champions, the Burleigh Bishops, have put themselves in a very strong position with 2 big wins. It was good to see guest player GM Dejan Antic turning out on the first night, and also Andrew Allen on a temporary trip home from Lithuania.

Week 2 Report

A feature of play on the second night of the 2006 Humble Pawn Teams event was the closeness of the games. Individually there were very few mis-matches. The Eastern Suburbs team have been re-branded as the Friendly Attackers, and they arrived in a brand new strip. Very inspiring for the other teams, we hope. Amy Evans, recently out of retirement, showed that if anything she has improved with the layoff, defeating Gene Nakauchi in a splendid, razor sharp game. Well done Amy - Gene is very difficult to beat these days.

Currently Burleigh Bishops and Mudgeeraba are out in front on 10 team points, ahead of Nerang Knights, Norths and Friendly Attackers on 8 and Robina Rooks on 4. All teams have had a full complement of players so far.

No team is undefeated thus far.

Just a reminder that for each round teams score 2 points for a team win and 1 point for a team draw, plus a bonus point for a full complement of players with no byes. Just as with European football leagues, this method values a team win by 9-0 the same as a team win by 5-4. The countback method is individual points, just as in European football leagues goals scored are the countback method.

Week 3 Report

The Burleigh Bishops have continued their domination of the Humble Pawn Teams event. Their captain Bernie Saavedra is very good at encouraging, organising etc. They are going to be hard to beat. This week they crushed Norths with two 7-2 wins. The other games were very closely contested.

After 6 of 10 rounds the team scores are:

Burleigh Bishops 16
