The inaugural Beaudesert inter-school chess comp has been won in convincing fashion by St Bernard's. Their team comprising Angus Douglas, Wade Henderson, Hayden Delaney and Liam Moloney scored 24.5 to win by 5 points from the St Bernard's team comprising Laura Harder, Morgan Barnett, Matthew Dufty and Rowan Gallegos on 19.5.
The Jimboomba team comprising Allan Gratton, Shaun Klazema, Joanna Malicki and James Moore finished third on 17.5, on countback from the Beechmont team comprising Aaron Clark, Jessica Field, Courtney Molloy and Julian Nicolaou.
Hayden Delaney finished first in the individual section on 6.5/7, followed by James Moore (Jimboomba), Angus Douglas (St Bernard's), Wade Henderson (St Bernard's) and Liam Moloney (St Bernard's).
Seven schools and 101 students from the region participated in this inaugural event. Four of the schools have only had a chess programme for the last two terms. Nevertheless, each of these schools had several students who finished well into the top half of the standings. St Bernard's are quite experienced in chess competitions, being regular competitors in the Gold Coast inter-school comp. It is great that they participated in this competition, as it sets a standard for future events. Congratulations to all students on really high standards of behaviour on the day, and thanks to all teachers and parents for supporting this new competition.
