Chess in 2012 & 2013

Welcome back to another year of chess everyone!

For those juniors who do chess with Gardiner Chess or other coaches at your school, whether you do it just for fun or perhaps take it a little more seriously, we do wish you a great deal of satisfaction from playing the world's greatest game. Adults likewise!

Fantastic opportunities for keen junior chess players this year and next!

The Chess Association of Queensland (CAQ) has asked Gardiner Chess to organise and run the 2013 Australian Junior Championships. We are currently investigating suitable venues, but the event is likely to be held on the Gold Coast from Saturday 19th January to Sunday 27th January.

This tournament is a 'not for profit' event. We are seeking sponsors. We may have need for some volunteer assistance.

What can Queensland junior chess players do?

Do everything you can during 2012 to be as good a chess player as possible. Study chess books, attend chess clubs, play online, enter chess tournaments, get coaching. We would very much like to see our juniors challenging for titles, or at the very least playing to the best of their ability. Let's make it a team effort. So plan to be here on the Gold Coast next January!

Opportunities for you to improve your chess

  • 21 & 22 April 2012 ~ Gold Coast Junior Championships

  • 26 to 29 June 2012 ~ Queensland Junior Championships (Grandmaster Ian Rogers will be available to analyse your games at this event)

  • 19 to 27 Jan 2013 ~ (to be confirmed) Australian Junior Championships

  • Australia Junior Chess League's 2012 Junior Elite Training Squad (JETS), sponsored by Johns-Putra Ltd, is for stronger players who participated in either the recent Australian Junior Chess Championships or the Queenstown Classic. These players are eligible to apply to join the JETS squad. Further information and an application form can be found here. The application must be received by 25 February.

Unfortunately very few local players will be strong enough to make the JETS squad.
Gardiner Chess is considering putting on a week-long junior training squad in the last week of term two 18-22 June for players with a QJ or ACF rating of at least 1,000. Grandmaster Ian Rogers will be staying with us for this week, and he is widely regarded as Australia's top chess trainer. He is also heavily involved in the Australian junior selection process. As this is a school week, we are not sure how many of the top chess students will be able to attend, so we are asking for registrations of interest. Please email Graeme Gardiner ggardiner@gardinerchess.com immediately if you are interested. The week will be relatively low cost (not for profit).

Private Coaching

If you require a private coach, we can put you directly in touch with a master level coach, with whom you can negotiate your own financial arrangements.

Visit the calendar here and you will find all of our schools events, as well as our weekend competitions for adults and juniors and school holiday junior chess programmes. There is also a link to the CAQ calendar from this page.

Junior Player of the Year

Congratulations to Yi Liu, who has been awarded the Arlauskas Medal by the Australian Chess Federation for Junior Player of 2011. This is very well-deserved, as Yi has put a great deal of effort into his chess, and this was highlighted by his win of the Lidums Australian Young Masters competition in December.

Upcoming Events
(organised by Gardiner Chess)

Our Quads Chess Program, is held after school at the Mudgeeraba Foundation Centre at 7 School Street, Mudgeeraba every Tuesday during term time from 4.30-6.30pm. Andrew Fitzpatrick and Justine Jule, with the help of our coaching staff Christine Broadway, Jonas Muller and Alex Arase, run this innovative program and it is proving to be very popular. All games are sent for ratings, so it is a chance for those new to chess to start climbing the ratings ladder.
  • Gold Coast Tin Cup Sat & Sun, 11 & 12 February at Emmanuel College, Carrara, Gold Coast

This event is for adults or juniors rated under 1750 ACF or QJ at the usual weekend time controls of 60+10 Fischer. The four ratings groups give players of all standards the opportunity to win prizes. Newcomers and beginners are most welcome. Like any sport, beginners should enter as a learning experience, with no expectation of winning many, if any games.

Tin Cup winners in 2011

Term One Junior Masters Sat & Sun, 10 & 11 March at Emmanuel College, Carrara, Gold Coast (venue to be confirmed)

Moulthun Ly, who is now an International Master, was the first winner of our junior masters competition in term two, 2003. Since then many strong juniors have been regular competitors in the event, which has been held every term.

From the start of the Junior Masters series we stated that the aim of the competition was to produce champion chess players. For this reason, there is a minimum QJ rating of 800 required to enter, and we always aim to emphasise some of the qualities we believe are required to be a champion.

Gold Coast Active Championship Sunday 25 March at Emmanuel College, Carrara, Gold Coast (venue to be confirmed)

This event is for adults and juniors, and newcomers and beginners are most welcome.

From the CAQ Calendar ~ Bill Powell Open Sat & Sun, 18 & 19 February at Coolum RSL

Grand Prix Events

Many Queensland weekend chess events are part of three grand prix series:

  • The CAQ Grand Prix series can be found here
  • The Oceania Grand Prix series here
  • The ACF Grand Prix series here

We are proud that the Gold Coast Open, our flagship weekend tournament, is part of all three Grand Prix series, and the only Queensland event in the Oceania series. It is one of only seven top level category 5 events in the series, the others being held in Queenstown NZ (already held in January), Doeberl Cup, Canberra over Easter, Sydney International Open (immediately after the Doeberl Cup), Fiji International (May), NSW Open (9-11 June), Gold Coast Open (22-24 June), Noumea Open (16-20 July).

Around 10 Queenslanders participated in the Queenstown Classic, surely one of the best open tournaments in the world, for all sorts of reasons, particularly the spectacular scenery.
