The dust has now settled on the four busiest weeks of chess events in our year. |
|
Oceania Zonal
The Oceania Zonal held at the Outrigger Twin Towns Resort, Tweed Heads was an outstanding success. We received many notes of congratulations on the live coverage, which we believe set new standards in Australian chess. GM Ian Rogers' live analysis of three games per round was exceptional, and The Closet Grandmaster is rapidly becoming an institution in Australian chess. The Monroi PCMs were well accepted by a large proportion of the players, ensuring the live coverage of 14 games in each round. Full results and games can be found hereIn our last issue we reported that David Smerdon became the first Queenslander to gain the much coveted Grandmaster title. At the Zonal he claimed that he didn't play his best chess, but nevertheless won the event outright, and will represent the region at the World Cup scheduled for Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, from 20th November to 15th December this year. The women's event was deservedly won by Gold Coaster WIM Arianne Caoili, who is now studying at the Australian National University in Canberra. She will also represent the region at the World Cup.

Gold Coast Open After the Zonal we held the Gold Coast Open, which is widely regarded as one of the top three or four weekenders in the nation. Grandmaster Gawain Jones from England won the open event, Mark Stokes the under 1600 and Kees Huband-Lint and Allen Foster shared the under 1000 event.
A
total of 118 players participated. |
Queensland Junior Championships was our next event, held in Brisbane
Juniors from the Gold Coast won
all six titles: All results can be found here |

Runaway Bay
Shopping Village
Junior Event Alex Stahnke, who has been in great form all year, deservedly won this event ahead of Gene Nakauchi and Stefan Riemelmoser (an Austrian visitor), both rated over 2100. This made up for Alex unluckily finishing runner up last year. Full details here. |
The Queensland Championship is currently being held over a period of months, and progress scores and games can be found here here.
