David Smerdon
has become Australia's fourth (and Queensland's first) Grandmaster

Popular Queenslander David Smerdon finally got his FIDE rating over the 2500 mark at the NSW Open last weekend to gain the coveted Grandmaster title. He had previously earned four Grandmaster norms (only three are required) at the Australian Championships in Brisbane, Thai Open in Bangkok, Pardubice Open (Czech Republic) and Queenstown Open (NZ). Well done David!
