NEWS

Surfers Paradise Open

It was great to see David Smerdon and Arianne Caoili back on the coast to compete in the Surfers Paradise Open. David convincingly won the event, picking up a few more FIDE points, and edging him closer to the Grandmaster title. Arianne was in fine form defeating GM Darryl Johansen, and narrowly losing to IM Stephen Solomon. Full details including a report and results here.  Congratulations to the Karibasic family for putting on a top class event.

Bundaberg Open

This tournament was won by IM Stephen Solomon. Go  here  for the results of this tournament and others, including the Queensland Interclub.

Australian Junior Chess League

A new organisation has been formed in relation to the administration and development of junior chess in Australia, namely the Australian Junior Chess League. The President is Charles Zworestine, and Deputy President GM Ian Rogers. Two Queenslanders have key positions, with Tanya Simmonds and Tracy Gray taking on the positions of Secretary and Treasurer.

Chess Olympiad and World Championship

Early notice of two very important events being held in Germany coming up:

The World Championship Match between Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik takes place from 14th October to 2nd November in Bonn. Official site here.

The Chess Olympiad will be held in Dresden from 12th to 25th November.
Official site here.

As mentioned in our previous bulletin, the Australian Olympiad teams include Queenslanders IM David Smerdon and IM Stephen Solomon who have been selected on boards two and three for the open team.....great news for them and for Queensland chess! WIM Alexandra Jule has been selected as reserve for the women's team.

Ruth Coxhill Memorial FIDE Rated Tournament

The final round of this tournament will be played at the chess centre this Wednesday evening (17 September). The six juniors competing have given a very good account of themselves. IM Peter Froehlich is both happy and unhappy with the results. Happy that his students have played so well, but slightly unhappy because two of his students have defeated him!

You can watch the games live at our webpage here - and this includes many of the games already played in the tournament.

World Youth Chess Championships Vung Tau, Vietnam 19-31 October

The following Queenslanders will be representing Australia at this important event (my apologies that in the last issue I inadvertently omitted Abbie and Alannah):

Boys under 14 - Gene Nakauchi
Boys under 12 - Yi Liu
Girls under 12 - Leteisha Simmonds

Girls Under 12 - Abbie Kanagarajah

We are flying Virgin, and staying at Majestic Old Lion apartments, North Adelaide - see website. Please note that all Queensland juniors are welcome to join our group, as are parents if they wish. Players with our group have enjoyed significant success over the last few years, enhanced by the excellent work of our coaching team, which includes IM Peter Froehlich. On this occasion our group will be joined by IM Leonid Sandler. Mrs Fiona Pyper will be our team 'mother'.

Registrations of interest are welcome to Graeme Gardiner at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com.

Queensland InterSchools Teams Chess Championships

All the regional finals were held in term 3. The two biggest events in terms of numbers were at the Brisbane Finals at Brisbane City Hall on Monday 1st September, and the Gold Coast Finals at Carrara Basketball Stadium on 10th September.

Results for terms 1 to 3 can be accessed via the left hand sidebar or in the schools' section on our front page here.

Look out for information for chess in Term 4 in the schools' section on the front page of our website.

15 to 24 January 2009 - 2009 Queenstown Open, NZ

Due to insufficient enrolments, we have regrettably cancelled our group trip to the Queenstown Open.

For those wanting to go on an individual basis, full details are at www.newzealandchess.co.nz/queenstownchess/.

Olympiad Appeal

After the World Championship, the Chess Olympiad is the most important event in the international chess calendar. It is certainly the most important teams event in the calendar. It is held every two years. This year it will be held in Dresden, Germany from 12th to 25th November. The official site is at http://f0246.futris02.de/cms/cms/english/.

Unlike most competing nations, the Australian teams receive no government support and must pay their own way, a burden compounded by the distance involved from Australia to Germany and the corresponding high air fares. The costs increase with every Olympiad. They can't do it alone, but depend on the support of the Australian chess community.

We ask you all to reach for the hip pocket, and give what you can to the ACF Olympiad Appeal. No donation is too large or too small - all will get the teams that much closer to Germany and will be acknowledged on this site: www.caq.org.au/olympiad/index.htm.

All donors to the last Olympiad Appeal received email bulletins from the players direct from Turin. A similar thank-you gesture for donors is anticipated from the players in Dresden.

Ian Murray, who has been a volunteer chess administrator in Queensland for some 30 years is the Olympiad Appeal Coordinator for 2009. Thanks Ian!

JOBS

School Chess Coaches Required

Leaving school and going to uni? Need part-time income whilst studying? Consider working for Gardiner Chess as a coach in schools in your region. Contact us by phone or email. We need coaches in all areas, but particularly in the Southern areas and Northern areas of Brisbane - ie Redcliffe, Caboolture, Samford, Logan and Forest Lake areas.

Gardiner Chess employs many coaches (mainly casual part-time) around South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Because increasing numbers of schools are keen to introduce chess programmes we always are on the lookout for more coaching staff. While many of our staff are uni students, others are older and just want to supplement their income. Generally quite strong players are required for high schools, but the playing strength for primary students is not so important, because the vast majority are beginners. The ability to teach and relate well to young people is the most important attribute we are looking for. We provide our coaches with extensive resources plus assistance in training methods and support. Additionally, we hold professional development seminars twice a year. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested: ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

Our aim is to provide schools throughout Queensland with ongoing chess coaching services. David Cowland-Cooper is already running an excellent franchise in Cairns.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Private Chess Lessons

Please contact Graeme on 5522 7221 or via ggardiner@gardinerchess.com if you are interested in boosting your chess ability.
