RECENT EVENTS
Grandmaster Simul
On Wednesday 9 April,
English Grandmaster Gawain Jones played a 25
board simul. WIM Alexandra Jule defeated Gawain
(having previously defeated GM Rogers in a simul), and
draws were achieved by Sam Grigg, Sebastian
Jule and 92-year-old Nell Van De Graaff. Nell
said she was so excited, she couldn't sleep that night!
See GM Ian Rogers' recent Sun Herald
column, which includes the
annotated game.
Queensland Open
Championship
George Lester won the Queensland Open
Championship - full results at
www.caq.org.au/htm/results.htm.
Gold Coast
Active Championship
This was won
by Bruce Williams, playing his first event in
Australia since emigrating from South Africa. We
understand that Bruce also plays for Club Bullwinkle.
Bruce was married recently. Full results at
www.gardinerchess.com/gcactivechamps08.htm.
Doeberl Cup
For results, videos
commentaries by GM Ian Rogers, etc, check out this
website:

Sydney International Open
Australia's new GM, Zong Yuan Zhao, finished in a
four way tie for first place in this event. Amiel
Rosario's live blogs on the Closet Grandmaster
website added a new dimension to live chess during this
tournament. Once again, GM Ian Rogers gave
continuous live commentary at the venue which was also
very popular.
Chess
Coaches Required
Leaving school and
going to uni? Need part-time income whilst studying?
Consider working for Gardiner Chess as a coach in
schools in your region. Contact us by phone or
email. We need coaches in all areas, but particularly in the Southern areas and Northern
areas of Brisbane - ie Redcliffe, Caboolture, Samford, Logan
and Forest Lake areas.
Gardiner Chess employs many coaches (mainly casual
part-time) around South East Queensland and Northern
NSW. Because increasing numbers of schools are keen to
introduce chess programmes we always are on the lookout
for more coaching staff. While many of our staff are uni
students, others are older and just want to supplement
their income. Generally quite strong players are
required for high schools, but the playing strength for
primary students is not so important, because the vast
majority are beginners. The ability to teach and relate
well to young people is the most important attribute we
are looking for. We provide our coaches with extensive
resources plus assistance in training methods and
support. Additionally, we hold professional development
seminars twice a year. Please contact Graeme Gardiner
if you are interested:
ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.
Olympiad Appeal
Pick the Teams Competition
www.caq.org.au/olympiad/teams.html
After the World Championship, the Chess Olympiad is
the most important event in the international chess
calendar. It is certainly the most important teams event
in the calendar. It is held every two years. This year
it will be held in Dresden, Germany from 12th to 25th
November. The official site is at
http://f0246.futris02.de/cms/cms/english/.
Unlike most competing nations, the Australian teams
receive no government support and must pay their own
way, a burden compounded by the distance involved from
Australia to Germany and the corresponding high air
fares. The costs increase with every Olympiad. They
can't do it alone, but depend on the support of the
Australian chess community.
We ask you all to reach for the hip pocket, and give
what you can to the ACF Olympiad Appeal. No donation is
too large or too small - all will get the teams that
much closer to Germany and will be acknowledged on this
site:
www.caq.org.au/olympiad/index.htm.
All donors to the last Olympiad Appeal received email
bulletins from the players direct from Turin. A similar
thank-you gesture for donors is anticipated from the
players in Dresden.
Ian Murray, who has been a volunteer chess administrator
in Queensland for some 30 years is the Olympiad Appeal
Coordinator for 2009. Thanks Ian!

VALE Jessica Disteldorf
27/3/1983 - 23/3/2008
Many of you will know Jessica Disteldorf.
She first became active in chess in Canberra
where she was one of Geoff Butler's
most promising students. She moved to Mackay
as a High School student, and represented
Club Bullwinkle in many Interclub matches.
For a number of years, while completing her
studies at the University of Queensland, she
excelled as a schools' coach in Brisbane,
first working for The Queensland School of
Chess, then later, Gardiner Chess. She went
on to a successful, but sadly short, career
as a Banking Analyst in Sydney.
Jessica Anne Horton nee Disteldorf
passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday. For
five years she's been dealing with a rare
form of cancer. It seemed that surgery in
2003/2004 had removed all of the cancer, but
it recurred, and spread rapidly in 2006. The
medical efforts then were simply focused on
buying her as much time as possible.
This time she did not take for granted, as
in her typical, amazingly positive style,
she gave so much to so many people,
absolutely living the fullest of lives. Her
(many) friends will remember her for her
humour, fierce intelligence, loving nature,
loyalty and rare beauty. She is survived by
her loving husband, Jason Horton, and her
step-daughter, Emily.
She
showed above all that it IS possible
to live positively right to the very end.
Her dire situation did not stop her from
getting married last year or continuing to
put everything she could into her
friendships, church and family. She is a
true inspiration.
In her typical witty and positive style, she
started a website:
http://www.dyingforbeginners.com which
is still active, as a site for people to
visit for information and moral support if
they are facing a terminal illness in a
loved one or themselves.
She chose to do some 'media tarting' to
promote the cause of cancer charities,
particularly the Leukemia Foundation, and
she asked all her friends to ask everyone
else to donate to this worthy cause if they
can. You can see more of her story on the
ABC Australian Story website:
http://www.abc.net.au/austory/default.htm
http://www.abc.net.au/austory/content/2007/s2213101.htm
Episode: It's A Beautiful Day,
broadcast: 14/04/2008
Thank you for everything, Jessica. Nik

Games don't

plenty of time earlier in the day to do all sorts of
things.
Gardiner Chess
took a group to this event on the South Island of NZ in
2006. Surely this must be one of the most exquisite
locations for a chess tournament in the world.
Queenstown is an awesome place, with heaps to see and
do, and views to die for. For example, the exhilarating
jetboat trip we did out into the mountainous wilderness
along the Dart River was indescribably beautiful and
heaps of fun for all of us.
There was an interesting innovation at the 2006 event
where Cathy Rogers brought along a very challenging
10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle and set it up just outside
the tournament hall. It had the fantastic effect of
bringing everyone together socially at various times
over several days doing this mammoth jigsaw. We even saw
a certain well-known Aus Grandmaster who was in the
middle of his game on board one standing outside with a
group doing the puzzle. It was finally completed on the
final day after the last round had finished, and there
was not one piece missing despite some mysterious
'sabotage' that occurred overnight. Please repeat this
in 2009 Cathy!
Full details at
www.newzealandchess.co.nz/queenstownchess/. Gardiner
Chess will provide package details soon. Justine Jule,
who hails from Kiwiland, but has never been to
Queenstown (shame on her!), will be leading the group.
Registrations of interest most welcome to Justine Jule

jjule@gardinerchess.com.
