Vale Bobby Fischer

This troubled chess genius died aged 64 in Iceland, apparently from a treatable kidney condition for which he refused medication. He is described as 'A mercurial chess player who ranks among the greatest grandmasters of all time, Bobby Fischer became a persona non-grata in his home country, the US, after a payday in communist Yugoslavia and praising the attacks of September 11 2001'. Holiday Chess in Mudgeeraba

Our ever-popular day-time chess camp, from 21 to 25 January, provides expert instruction and tournaments for all levels of ability from absolute beginners onwards, and is a fast-track way for keen players to get onto the ratings ladder. The cost is $175 (or $155 if paid early) for the full week, or $45 ($40 early bird) per day. As usual, the third and subsequent child in the same family is free of charge.

Gold Coast Junior Masters for Term 1

If your Queensland Junior Rating is around 800 or more, you are welcome to join us on Monday evenings at the centre, from 4pm onwards. This increasingly well-attended competition recommences on Monday 11 February.

Calling all girls!

If you prefer a girls-only chess class, join us on Monday afternoons after school where you will have expert tuition and lots of fun with Mrs Christine Broadway. Beginners welcome. Click here for a flier.

Gold Coast After-School Chess

Mondays are reserved for the Junior Masters and Girls Only events, but every other school day we are open for after-school chess for all kids, whether complete beginners or more advanced players. These sessions officially run from 4 to 6 pm, but kids are welcome to come straight after school. The term fee is $80, or $10 casual rate. For a small fee we run a chess bus pick-up service for local schools, by arrangement. We run a kid-friendly cafe and have cappuccinos and reading materials for adults!

JOBS

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

Our aim is to provide schools throughout Queensland with ongoing chess coaching services. David Cowland-Cooper is already running an excellent franchise in Cairns.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Chess Coaches Required

Leaving school and going to uni? Need part-time income whilst studying? Consider working for Gardiner Chess as a coach in schools in your region. Contact us by phone or email. We need coaches in all areas, but particularly in the Southern areas and Northern areas of Brisbane - ie Redcliffe, Caboolture, Samford, Logan and Forest Lake areas.

Gardiner Chess employs many coaches (mainly casual part-time) around South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Because increasing numbers of schools are keen to introduce chess programmes we always are on the lookout for more coaching staff. While many of our staff are uni students, others are older and just want to supplement their income. Generally quite strong players are required for high schools, but the playing strength for primary students is not so important, because the vast majority are beginners. The ability to teach and relate well to young people is the most important attribute we are looking for. We provide our coaches with extensive resources plus assistance in training methods and support. Additionally, we hold professional development seminars twice a year. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested: ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.
