NEWS

Australian Junior Championships, Cranbrook School, Sydney
13-25 January 2008
www.nswjcl.org.au/AustralianJunior/2008/index.htm

It's not too late to join the party!

Mrs Justine Jule will be the group leader for this tournament, accompanied by her husband Rey (providing much support and driving the Gardiner Chess bus) and their children.  Their daughter WIM Alexandra Jule, back from her world travels, is one of our coaches for the group along with IM Peter Froehlich.

Details: The group will leave the Gold Coast on the morning of Saturday 12th January and return on the evening of Saturday 26th January. There will be at least two private cars travelling in convoy with the chess bus. We are happy to pay all petrol costs of any further vehicles able to take extra people.

Our group will be staying right next to the beach at Coogee Beach Backpackers in shared accommodation. It'll be basic, affordable and we're convinced it'll be a lot of fun - especially for our juniors. The website is www.surfsidebackpackers.com.au/index.cfm (Coogee Beach).

The cost is $1,300 for adults, and $1,700 for juniors. This includes transport, accommodation, all meals, all entertainment, insurance, entry fees and coaching. As mentioned, IM Peter Froehlich and WIM Alexandra Jule will be our two coaches, with more to be added if required. Each coach will have a maximum of 8 juniors.

If you do not wish to be part of our group, but would like to come along each day for coaching, please register your interest by emailing Graeme Gardiner at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com. Or contact him if you need further info.

Young Queenslanders Abroad!

After Grandmaster-to-be David Smerdon and WIM Alexandra Jule complete their chess-playing sojourn in Europe, they will be heading for Turkey later this week for the World Junior Championships, which runs from 17 to 29 November. David will be in the coaching team and Alex will be joining Jess Kinder, Gene Nakauchi, Leteisha Simmonds, Abbie Kanagarajah and Callum Gray to play for Australia. We wish these talented young chess players the very best of luck! Follow their progress at http://wycc2007.tsf.org.tr/.

Young talent

Twelve-year-old Gene Nakauchi showed he was in top form by defeating IM Gary Lane and FM Jesse Sales in the Surfers Paradise Open.

Over the weekend of 3 & 4 November, as a warm up for the world juniors, Gene played some serious chess. He scored 1-1 against FM Jonathan Humphrey, and then lost 2-0 to his coach, IM Peter Froehlich.

Australian Schools Teams Finals
Somerville House
Saturday & Sunday, 1 & 2 December

Congratulations to the four winning Queensland teams competing in the national finals: Open Secondary: Kings Christian College (Gold Coast), Open Primary: All Saints Anglican School (Gold Coast), All Girls Secondary: Somerset College (Gold Coast), All Girls Primary: Somerville House (Brisbane).
Full results at:
www.gardinerchess.com/schools/2007/state%20finals/qldschoolfinals.htm.

It was very gratifying to have teams from every region of Queensland, with 20 primary teams and 16 secondary teams competing in the open competition. We now look forward to seeing the first regional team to win a Queensland Schools Final. The website for the Australian Schools Teams Finals is at www.caq.org.au/astc/index.htm

University Rapidplay - Sydney University
3-4 December 2007

Information from Tomek Rej, SU chess club president: This tournament is open to all undergraduate and post graduate students in Australian universities. Last year the tournament was a great success and with your support it will be even better this year.

Queensland Lightning Championship
Saturday 8 December

The Queensland Lightning Championship will be held the day before the Q Club Teams Championship (see below), at the same venue. More information, click on title above.

Last year received 29 entries and winner was Stephen Solomon. We would like to see many more entries than this, so roll up everyone! All that is required is a couple of hours of your time as it is blitz and 11 rounds. Entry fee is $10.

Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions regarding either event. Hope to see you there.

Queensland Clubs Teams Championship
Sunday 9 December

December is approaching and this means that it is time for the Queensland Club Teams Championship and Qld Lightning Championship. All the relevant information is shown at the link above.

Venue this year is Logan City Chess Club, Springwood High School, Dennis Road, Springwood. This event always has a good turnout and I would like to see 100 adults and juniors playing.

This year, the CAQ council has decided to add a third section to the traditional adult and junior sections. It will be a four board adult division and is for clubs that struggle to field an eight board adult club team and for the clubs that have players under 1600 who would ordinarily miss out.

Reminder that all players must be members of the club they are representing and members of the CAQ. Also, teams must be representing one of the CAQ affiliated clubs. CAQ affiliated clubs can field more than one team in a division if they able to. This is strongly encouraged.

CAQ Tournament Officer

Holiday Chess

Do your children get bored towards the end of the summer holidays? We can solve this problem for you by providing a two-week programme of chess. From 14 to 18 January we hold the Summer Rapids, a very inexpensive way to keep young chess players amused at only $25 for the full day, or $95 for the whole week. There is no teaching component in this tournament, but all games are sent for ratings. It runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm - half days are available too.

Our ever-popular day-time chess camp, from 21 to 25 January, provides expert instruction and tournaments for all levels of ability and is a fast-track way for keen players to get onto the ratings ladder. The cost is $175 (or $155 if paid early) for the full week, or $45 ($40 early bird) per day.

As usual, the third and subsequent child in the same family is free of charge.

JOBS

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

Our aim is to provide schools throughout Queensland with ongoing chess coaching services. David Cowland-Cooper is already running an excellent franchise in Cairns.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Chess Coaches Required

Leaving school and going to uni? Need part-time income whilst studying? Consider working for Gardiner Chess as a coach in schools in your region. Contact us by phone or email. We need coaches in all areas, but particularly in the Southern areas and Northern areas of Brisbane - ie Redcliffe, Caboolture, Samford, Logan and Forest Lake areas.

Gardiner Chess employs many coaches (mainly casual part-time) around South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Because increasing numbers of schools are keen to introduce chess programmes we always are on the lookout for more coaching staff. While many of our staff are uni students, others are older and just want to supplement their income. Generally quite strong players are required for high schools, but the playing strength for primary students is not so important, because the vast majority are beginners. The ability to teach and relate well to young people is the most important attribute we are looking for. We provide our coaches with extensive resources plus assistance in training methods and support. Additionally, we hold professional development seminars twice a year. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested: ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.
