NEWS

Australian Junior Championships, Cranbrook School, Sydney
13-25 January 2008

Whilst putting together a package for our party to attend the upcoming Australian Junior Championships, we discovered that affordable accommodation is very hard to come by in the holiday season.

Our group leader on this occasion will be Mrs Justine Jule of Gardiner Chess.

Our group will be staying right next to the beach at Coogee Beach Backpackers. For many years I've been taking groups to the Australian Juniors, and some of our best times have been at fairly basic establishments. However we are convinced that this accommodation will be a lot of fun for our juniors. www.surfsidebackpackers.com.au/index.cfm (Coogee Beach)

Details: We leave the Gold Coast on the morning of Saturday 12th January and return on the evening of Saturday 26th January. Mr Rej Jule will be driving the Gardiner Chess bus, and we will have two private cars travelling in convoy. If there are a couple of parents who wish to come with us, especially those who have 7 seater vehicles who can take extra passengers, we are happy to pay all petrol costs.

The indicative cost is $1,300 for adults, and $1,700 for juniors (cost subject to sufficient numbers). This includes transport, accommodation, all meals, all entertainment, insurance, entry fees and coaching. IM Peter Froehlich and WIM Alexandra Jule will be our two coaches, with more to be added if required. Each coach will have a maximum of 8 juniors.

If you wish to be part of our party, we need an indication by 30 September at the very latest. This is absolutely essential, as the accommodation cannot be held for long - there is simply too much demand. Please email Graeme Gardiner ggardiner@gardinerchess.com

If you do not wish to be part of our group, but would like to come along each day for coaching, please register your interest.

Humble Pawn Teams Event

This continues with rounds 5 and 6 this coming Wednesday 19th September at the chess centre.

Amir Karibasic's new Kings of Chess Club

Amir Karibasic is proving himself to be a force in the promotion of chess in Queensland, and in particular the Gold Coast. He has now launched a new 'Kings of Chess' Club that meets once a month every first Tuesday of each month, from 6-10pm at Italo-Australian Soccer Club, 18 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters QLD 4226. More info can be found at: www.italoaustralianclub.com.au

Chess in Schools Conference, Aberdeen, Scotland

Wendy and I recently returned from the Chess in Schools Conference held in Aberdeen, Scotland. We gave a paper entitled 'Positive moves in Australian chess, with especial regard to autism', and interestingly there were two other papers featuring chess and autism. Colleagues in the Mt Alexander Schools Cluster in Victoria are doing some very interesting research into embedding chess in the curriculum, and using the chess programme alongside national numeracy benchmarking. All in all it was a most worthwhile trip.

World Chess Championship in Mexico

This has just started. The official site is at www.chessmexico.com/

Vale Vic Halin

Kerry Corker advises that Vic Halin has passed away at the age of 82 after a long battle with motor neurone disease. Kerry has been visiting Vic for many years. When he was more mobile, Vic was a regular at Gold Coast Chess Club events in the 1990s, and was also a regular in the casual chess area at Cavill Avenue. Vic also had a number of old friends in the Brisbane chess scene.

David Smerdon gains third Grandmaster norm

We are all very proud that David gained his third and final GM norm at the Czech Open. He now needs to get his rating over 2500 to gain the GM title. It currently sits at around 2465. Go David!

Ruth Coxhill Memorial FIDE Rated Tournament

This was a 10 player round robin event, with time controls of 90 mins a side + 30 secs a move

JOBS

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

Our aim is to provide schools throughout Queensland with ongoing chess coaching services. David Cowland-Cooper is already running an excellent franchise in Cairns.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Chess Coaches Required

Gardiner Chess employs many coaches (mainly casual part-time) around South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Because increasing numbers of schools are keen to introduce chess programmes we always are on the lookout for more coaching staff. While many of our staff are uni students, others are older and just want to supplement their income. Generally quite strong players are required for high schools, but the playing strength for primary students is not so important, because the vast majority are beginners. The ability to teach and relate well to young people is the most important attribute we are looking for. We provide our coaches with extensive resources plus assistance in training methods and support. Additionally, we hold professional development seminars twice a year. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested: ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.
