NEWS

Shock Retirement of Grandmaster Ian Rogers

Shortly after his annual visit to the Gold Coast with his wife Cathy, Ian quite unexpectedly announced his retirement from all tournament chess. No time is a good time for such news, but it was fitting that he did so after winning the Adelaide Open, going out a winner after 26 years as Australia's number one player. Apparently it was a very moving moment for everyone, with a huge outpouring of emotion. The decision to give up tournament chess was made for him by his doctors.

So we all now wait and see what Ian does next. We suspect it will involve coaching, and strong involvement in Australian teams as captain or coach. Ian is arguably Australia's number one coach, with knowledge second to none in Australia, and he has a fantastic work ethic. No doubt his chess journalism will continue to figure largely in his 'new' life.

IM David Smerdon after his third and final GM norm in Europe

David has put the pressure on by giving himself until Christmas to get his GM title. Currently he is playing in the Czech Open alongside many GMs. So far he has scored 3.5/4, including a win against a GM in round 3. Follow his progress at www.czechopen.net  Go Smurf!

IM Stephen Solomon vs FM Gene Nakauchi

This training match resulted in a 7-1 win to Solo. However, Gene was far from disgraced, and indeed twice knocked back draw offers from the IM. We are very grateful to Stephen for giving up two weekends to give Gene this very tough competition.

Two years ago Stephen defeated Moulthun Ly 7.5-0.5 in their training match, and we all know how much Moulthun improved after that.

Tournament Chess in Queensland gets a big lift

It was great to see such good turnouts on consecutive weekends in June tournaments. The Darling Downs Open (won by IM David Smerdon on 6/6) was reborn in fine style, with the organisers digging into their new found junior strength to gain an attendance of 60 players. The following weekend, the Gold Coast Open, boosted by the new under 1000 section, regained its status as one of the top four weekenders in Australia with an attendance of 111. This event was won by GM Dejan Antic with a score of 6/7.

RESULTS

Inaugural Queensland Inter-Teams League

CAQ President John Surridge can be well pleased with his competition, which finished last weekend.  CAQ Deputy President Amir Karibasic has become quite a force in Queensland chess by putting together the winning team (Kings of Chess) in both competitions.

INFORMATION

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

Our aim is to provide schools throughout Queensland with ongoing chess coaching services. David Cowland-Cooper is already running an excellent franchise in Cairns.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Chess Coaches Required

Gardiner Chess employs many coaches (mainly casual part-time) around South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Because increasing numbers of schools are keen to introduce chess programmes we always are on the lookout for more coaching staff. While many of our staff are uni students, others are older and just want to supplement their income. Generally quite strong players are required for high schools, but the playing strength for primary students is not so important, because the vast majority are beginners. The ability to teach and relate well to young people is the most important attribute we are looking for. We provide our coaches with extensive resources plus assistance in training methods and support. Additionally, we hold professional development seminars twice a year. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested: ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.
