EVENTS TO COME

Gardiner Chess Gold Coast Open
next Sat/Sun 23/24 June

****over $6,000 in prizes****  Don't miss it!!

The Gold Coast Open will again be held at the Carrara Community Centre. Dr Peter Haron has generously sponsored a third section for players rated under 1000. So for the first time there will be three sections - Open, Under 1600 and Under 1000. The total prize fund will be well in excess of $6,000. There will be an extensive and friendly canteen, and Gardiner Chess will run a chess shop/bookstall. This is a top level category five Australian Grand Prix event, with a packet of Grand Prix points on offer in all sections. As such this is the most lucrative tournament on the Queensland calendar.

The good news for kids rated under 1000 is that there are some substantial prizes to be won in this section. The good news for adults is that because of this, you are likely to be playing fewer juniors, and more adults in the open and under 1600 sections.

Chess Camp
2-4 and 6 July

This will be held as usual at the Gardiner Chess Centre. The camp is very popular, with 50+ students attending every day, split into beginners, intermediate and advanced groups. The young chess players of all standards receive lots of varied chess coaching, chess activities, rated tournament games, and a small portion of non-chess activities just to break things up a little....and the chance to make some great new friends. We have had some children coming to the camp for years. Wherever you are in Queensland, and whatever the playing standard of your child, it is well worth considering coming to the Gold Coast to engage your child in a great chess opportunity. Children of all ages and abilities most welcome.

RESULTS

Cairns Allegroo

Congratulations to David Cowland-Cooper who won the Queen's Birthday Cairns Allegro Chess Challenge (his own event!)

This is thought to be the first adult event organised in Cairns since the old club folded about 10 years ago. David won the event on a picket fence 7/7. This was a pretty good effort, since he had his organising duties to worry about, and played Samuel Boipuso, a FIDE Master rated 2117 from Botswana, who is an engineer working in Cairns. There is a full report and results at www.fnq.iqchess.com.au/results-ccc-110607.pdf

Queensland Championships and NSW Open

Congratulations to two of our young guns Gene Nakauchi and Alex Stahnke who both built upon recent strong results with excellent tournaments last weekend.

Gene, aged 12, came second in the Queensland Championship on 5/7, drawing with IM Stephen Solomon and winning $300. Sam Grigg scored an excellent 4/7 in this event to finish 3rd=. Stephen won the event on 6/7. Full results at www.caq.org.au/htm/2007QldCh/index.html.

Alex, still only 10, playing in the NSW Open in Sydney, won his rating group and $250. He recorded draws against 2 players rated around 2000. Full results at www.nswca.org.au/2007%20NSW%20Open.htm.

Well done Gene, Alex and Sam!

Gold Coast Rapid Championship

This was won by Phachara Wongwichit with a score of 5.5/6 on countback from Kevin Casey. Daniel Ford and Sam Grigg came third and fourth on 5. 58 players took part. Full results at www.gardinerchess.com/main%20events/2007/tournaments/rapid/Gold%20Coast%20Rapid,%20May%202007.htm.

Darling Downs Open

It was good to see the Darling Downs Open resurrected this year, held this weekend in Toowoomba. We hope it will become a regular fixture in the calendar once again. There was an excellent turnout of 60 players, with 30 from Toowoomba. Junior progress in the region was highlighted by the large number of local juniors participating. Results: 1st IM David Smerdon 6/6 - we are not quite sure of the other placings, but we believe that Michael Gearing, Gene Nakauchi and Tony Weller finished on 5/6, and Jonas Muller

 CHESS JOBS

Chess Coaches Required

Gardiner Chess employs many (mainly casual part-time) coaches around South East Queensland and Northern NSW. We are always on the lookout for more coaching staff. Many of our staff are uni students, whilst others are more mature. We generally need quite strong players for high schools, whilst the playing strength is not so important for primary students, the vast majority of whom are beginners. The ability to teach and relate well to young people is the most important attribute we are looking for. We supply many resources, full training and hold regular professional development seminars for our coaches. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested: ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

Our aim is to provide schools throughout Queensland with ongoing chess coaching services.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.
