Gardiner Chess Gold Coast Open
Sat/Sun 23/24 June

Over $6,000 in prizes!

The Gold Coast Open will again be held at the Carrara Community Centre. Dr Peter Haron has generously sponsored a third section for players rated under 1000. So for the first time there will be three sections - Open, Under 1600 and Under 1000. The total prize fund will be well in excess of $6,000. There will be an extensive and friendly canteen, and Gardiner Chess will run a chess shop/bookstall. This is a top level category five Australian Grand Prix event, with a packet of Grand Prix points on offer in all sections. As such this is the most lucrative tournament on the Queensland calendar.

The good news for kids rated under 1000 is that there are some substantial prizes to be won in the under 1000 section. The good news for adults is that because of this, you are likely to be playing fewer juniors, and more adults in the open and under 1600 sections! July School Holiday Chess Camp

This will be held as usual at the Gardiner Chess Centre. The camp is very popular, with 50+ students attending every day, split into beginners, intermediate and advanced groups. The young chess players of all standards receive lots of varied chess coaching, chess activities, rated tournament games, and a small portion of non-chess activities just to break things up a little....and the chance to make some great new friends. We have had some children coming to the camp for years. Wherever you are in Queensland, and whatever the playing standard of your child, it is well worth considering coming to the Gold Coast to engage your child in a great chess opportunity. Children of all ages and abilities most welcome.

Doeberl Cup and Sydney International Open
held over Easter week

These have been two of the biggest chess events ever seen in Australia.

Congratulations to GM Ian Rogers on winning the Doeberl Cup, and also to GM Dejan Antic for his equal first in the Sydney International.

Gold Coast juniors Alexandra Jule, Gene Nakauchi and Alex Stahnke played in both events, and Jessica Kinder and Daniel Barrett played in the Doeberl Cup. The two under 12s, Gene Nakauchi and Alex Stahnke, both played a whole string of players rated 1800-2200, with excellent outcomes. Both should gain high FIDE ratings as a result of their performances.

In the Doeberl Cup Queenslanders Stephen Solomon, Ben Lazarus and Oleg Korenevski all picked up ratings points, Stephen finishing in a very commendable third place.

In the Sydney International, Stephen Solomon and David Smerdon did well, as did Ben Lazarus. Unfortunately Moulthun Ly did not achieve his third IM norm in either event. Arianne Caoili returned to tournament chess in this tournament.

The first Knight of Byron went to Ballina with Jarrod Laverty and William Budden sharing first place with 6/7 wins with Felix Klienmann 3rd. The day turned into a battle between the brothers with Nathan Laverty just getting up in the last round over Alex Budden and Arthur Horst to win the junior section.
