School Holiday Chess Camp
Tuesday to Friday 10 to 13 April, 9am to 5pm daily - NEXT WEEK!

As always, Gardiner Chess will be running its school holiday camp during the April School Holidays - next week. We believe that this camp compares very favourably with any junior chess offering around Australia. The young chess players of all standards receive lots of varied chess coaching, chess activities, rated tournament games, and a small portion of non-chess activities just to break things up a little . . . and the chance to make some great new friends. We have had some children coming to the camp for years. Wherever you are in Queensland, and whatever the playing standard of your child, it is well worth considering coming to the Gold Coast to engage your child in a great chess opportunity. Children of all ages and abilities most welcome.

RESULTS

March Madness Open

GM Dejan Antic and Moulthun Ly shared first place in this tournament with 6/7 - with Moulthun defeating Dejan in their individual match-up. FM Jonathan Sarfati, IM Stephen Solomon and David Lovejoy shared third on 5.5.

This Australian Grand Prix event, believed to be the first Grand Prix event to be held in Brisbane for several years, featured over $3,000 in prizes, plus a bucket-load of Grand Prix points. Well done Gail Young for having the initiative to get this event happening.

Gold Coast Active Championship
25 March

Although this event clashed with round two of the Qld Inter Teams League, it still attracted 58 (mainly junior) players.

Sam Grigg is the Gold Coast Active Champion for 2007. He deservedly won the event, having played the most solid and determined chess all day. Sam came first on tie-break from Luke Toda in second and Alex Stahnke third place.

Luke Toda was the surprise packet of the tournament, defeating Caleb Eriksson (with an excellent attack) and Sebastian Jule.

Other prize-winners were:

Rating Group A Rhys Davies
Rating Group B Daniel Lapitan
Rating Group C Jared Louie
Rating Group D Hannah Triscott
Rating Group E John Atherton
Rating Group F Kevin De Boer
Rating Group G Isabelle Lee

Queensland Inter-Teams League

Round two was held on Sunday 25 March, and the outstanding gathering of top level players continued. The Premier League included two GMs, two IMs, two FMs, Moulthun Ly on board three!!! and rather surprisingly Bullwinkle find themselves at the foot of the table, albeit narrowly. No doubt that will change as the season progresses.

Toshi Kimura v Gene Nakauchi Match

Toshi and Gene have finished their training match. Toshi won 4.5-2.5. This was excellent training for Gene.

Gold Coast Junior Masters

Term 1 Junior Masters concluded with a big night at the chess centre.

The evening commenced with an enthralling lecture by Moulthun Ly, in which he told the story of his progress from the 2006 Gold Coast Open, in which he scored 3.5/7 through to the World Open in Pennsylvania a few days later where he scored an IM norm and earned US$6,500. He described how he went on to Holland and gained his second IM norm, and he then played through a few of his best games.

After the lecture the players from all 3 groups from the Junior Masters played in a lightning event, and were joined by Moulthun, GM Dejan Antic and IM Leonid Sandler, who was holidaying on the Gold Coast.

Other adults - Amir Karibasic, Axel Stahnke, Joe Delmastro and Hans Muller - also joined in. There were 40 participants in this event.

Lightning

1st Dejan Antic 10.5/11,
2nd Leonid Sandler 10,
3rd Moulthun Ly 9.5

Rating Group A Alex Jule 7,
Rating Group B Tomotaka Onoda 6

The prizes were presented by Moulthun, who was the first winner of the Junior Masters nearly four years ago.

During the term, IM Peter Froehlich has been giving a 30 minute pre-game lecture to add value to the whole concept. On one occasion a visiting sports psychologist, David Nowland, gave a 30 minute talk on positive thinking.

If you are rated 800+, or perhaps just a little below, you should consider 'upping' your chess knowledge and ability by participating in this event in term 2.

INFORMATION

Queensland Inter-Schools Competitions

The regional inter-schools competitions for 2007, based upon Education Queensland districts right around Queensland, are now well underway. Attendances have been excellent in term one, and we expect them to increase again in terms two and three.

Full reports on round one at:

http://www.caq.org.au/htm/Interschool%20newsletter%202.htm &  http://www.gardinerchess.com/schools/2007/2007schoolinfo.htm

Grandmaster Dejan Antic

GM Dejan Antic is now living on the Gold Coast, and busy teaching students in private lessons. If you are interested in Grandmaster coaching, please contact Graeme Gardiner by email at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com  phone 5522 7221. Some of Dejan's students have already noticed a big improvement in their chess.

All Girls Group

Christine Broadway is running an 'All Girls' group at the chess centre on Mondays from 4-6pm. This is proving very successful. If you would prefer to be in an 'all girls' group, then contact the chess centre to join up. Girls only, of course!

World and Asian Junior Opportunities

There are several opportunities each year for young chess players to represent Australia in overseas competition. Our number one players in each age group cannot play in everything. So there may be a chance for you to represent your country, even if you are only rated (say) third or fourth in Australia in your age group. Remember, when you have represented your country, nobody can ever take that away from you, and it will be on your CV for life.

The Australian Junior Selections Coordinator, Brett Tindall email sydneyacademy@iprimus.com.au, has set up a webpage where you can register your interest in being selected for Australia. That way you will not slip through the net.
Go to www.sydneyacademyofchess.com.au/wjapplication.htm.

IQ Chess Franchise Opportunities

David Cowland-Cooper is now well-established in Cairns, and teaching chess at a number of schools already.

If you are passionate about chess, can teach primary students, have good communication and business skills, then an IQ Chess franchise might be for you. Please contact Graeme Gardiner to discuss. Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Adult Club at the Chess Centre

Alexandra Jule is running the adult club this year. It meets on Wednesdays from 7-10pm. With one round to go in the Bruce Harris Trophy, Rajko Mastilovic leads on 4.5/5, from Nenad Chelebichanin on 4 and Amir Karibasic and Alex Stahnke on 3.5. Round one of the Club Championship, which will be ACF Rated, commences on Wednesday 2 May.

Round one of the Humble Pawn Teams Event for 2007 will be held on Wednesday 18 April.

The adult club will be closed on Anzac Day and for each of the State of Origin nights.

Grandmaster Ian Rogers will be holding a simultaneous display on Wednesday 27 June. The details for the club, including calendar for the year, are given at our webpage www.gardinerchess.com  (adults).
