Queensland Inter-Schools Competitions

The regional inter-schools competitions for 2007, based upon Education Queensland districts, are now well underway. It was very gratifying to see healthy increases in attendances for most of the coastal districts, especially Cairns with a 30% increase to 206 and Townsville with a 50% increase to 152. In the next couple of weeks we have all of the South East Queensland regions coming up. If you wish to check details for your region, please go to www.gardinerchess.com  (schools).

March Madness Open - next weekend
Saturday & Sunday 17 & 18 February 2007

Nundah and Mt Carmel Invitationals

These two invitationals, which are being run by Donna Byrne (Mt Carmel Primary) on 22 March, and Greg Farlow (Nundah Primary) on 2 April, are good opportunities for schools to gain match practice for the official inter-schools events. Schools have been contacted about these events, but if you still need info, please contact Donna and Greg through the schools concerned.

Kerry Corker is still running his Master of the Endgame Course at the chess centre on Friday evenings from 6-7.30pm. IQ Chess franchise opportunities

Gardiner Chess is looking to set up chess coaching operations in the various regional centres of Queensland. We are looking for people with a good knowledge of chess, who like teaching, and who would like to develop a successful business. Please contact Graeme on ggardiner@gardinerchess.com if this interests you.

School Holiday Chess Camp
Tuesday to Friday 10 to 13 April, 9am to 5pm daily

As always, Gardiner Chess will be running its school holiday camp during the April School Holidays. We believe that this camp compares very favourably with any junior chess offering around Australia. The young chess players of all standards receive lots of varied chess coaching, chess activities, rated tournament games, and a small portion of non-chess activities just to break things up a little....and the chance to make some great new friends. We have had some children coming to the camp for years. Wherever you are in Queensland, and whatever the playing standard of your child, it is well worth considering coming to the Gold Coast to engage your child in a great chess opportunity. Children of all ages and abilities are most welcome.

Gold Coast Junior Masters

We have had another excellent turnout for the Junior Masters this term. There are three divisions, and the rating spread in each grade is quite narrow. After 4 rounds, Jonas Muller leads the main event on 3, with Gene Nakauchi, Alex Stahnke and Daniel Ford just behind on 2.5. Keishu Nagano and Curtis Jack lead the A Division on 4, whilst Darren Ooi leads the B Division on 4.

If you are rated 800+, or perhaps just a little below, you should consider 'upping' your chess knowledge and ability by participating in this event in term 2.

By the way, in addition to the after-game analysis, IM Peter Froehlich has been giving a 30 minute pre-game lecture to add value to the whole concept.

On Monday 19 March the participants will receive a 30 minute presentation from a Sports Psychologist - don't expect any of these young players to accept your draw offer after this presentation!! This term there will only be 7 rounds. On the final night we are having a lightning competition for all junior masters participants. They will also be joined by IM Peter Froehlich and FM Moulthun Ly.

Moulthun, who was the first winner of the Junior Masters four years ago, will be giving the participants a 30 minute presentation on his progress to the brink of the IM title, including his trip to Pennsylvania for the World Open where he won US$6,500, and the Hoogevens Festival in Holland.

Grandmaster Dejan Antic

We welcome back Dejan who will arrive in Brisbane on Tuesday 13 March. He will be available almost immediately for regular private coaching, especially in Brisbane. We have had a few expressions of interest, but he will need a few more. Please contact Graeme Gardiner ggardiner@gardinerchess.com if you are interested.

World and Asian Junior Opportunities

There are several opportunities each year for young chess players to represent Australia in overseas competition. Our number one players in each age group cannot play in everything, so there may be a chance for you to represent your country. Remember, when you have represented your country, nobody can ever take that away from you, and it will be on your CV for life.

The Australian Junior Selections Coordinator, Brett Tindall email sydneyacademy@iprimus.com.au, has set up a webpage where you can register your interest in being selected for Australia. That way you will not slip through the net. Go to www.sydneyacademyofchess.com.au/wjapplication.htm.

IQ Chess launch in Cairns

I travelled up to Cairns to help David Cowland-Cooper launch the Far North Queensland franchise of IQ Chess. Wow, it's a bit hot and rainy up there. But we got a great reception, from schools, individuals and the media. David is already teaching in schools, and has formed the Cairns Chess Club. I think there was a Cairns Chess Club a few years ago, so it is great that chess players in Cairns have somewhere to go now. Contact David at fnq@iqchess.com.au IM Peter Froehlich flew up to Cairns to conduct a simul at the launch, and scored an impressive 43/43. Visit David's website at www.iqchess.com.au.
