Gold Coast Junior Masters Competition

The term one competition commences tomorrow (Monday 12 February) at the chess centre. We already have a good list of entries, so perhaps this will be a record field. It is likely that we will have to split into three separate competitions. There will be an earlier start this year. IM Peter Froehlich will give a 30 minute lecture each week at 4pm, and the chess will commence at 4.30pm. This term there will be 7 rounds, with a lightning competition on the 8th week (2nd April) when the prizes will be presented.

Match between Toshi Kimura & Gene Nakauchi

Toshi Kimura will play Gene Nakauchi in an 8 games training match at the chess centre on Tuesdays, commencing at 4pm this Tuesday 13 February.

Master of the Endgame Course

Kerry Corker continues with his master of the endgame course on Fridays from 6-7.30pm. This is highly recommended for any young players who are serious about their chess and want to become champions. Several of Kerry’s students have gone on to become Queensland and Australian age champions.

All Girls Squad

Christine Broadway will be running an ‘all girls’ squad at the chess centre on Monday afternoons from 4-6pm.

Grandmaster Dejan Antic

Dejan has been coaching at the chess centre in the November/ December period. If visa applications are successful, we are hoping that he will be available for regular coaching in the Brisbane area. We are interested in receiving registrations of interest from those keen to receive regular private Grandmaster coaching with Dejan, either singly or with a partner.

Doeberl Cup and Sydney International

On behalf of Gardiner Chess, Axel Stahnke will be taking a small group of Gold Coast Juniors (maximum of 8) to both the Doeberl Cup and Sydney International Open. There are already 10 GMs and 8 IMs entered for the SIO, and most of these are likely to play in the Doeberl Cup. The group will fly to Canberra on Good Friday morning, take the bus from Canberra to Sydney on Easter Monday afternoon, and then fly from Sydney to Brisbane on Sunday 15 April. The two tournaments together provide the opportunity to play 16 FIDE rated games in 9 days.

IQ Chess launch in Cairns

David Cowland-Cooper has already started coaching in Cairns. IM Peter Froehlich will be conducting a simultaneous exhibition at Trinity Anglican School (White Rock Campus) this Thursday 15 February as part of the 4pm media launch of IQ Chess (Far North Queensland).

IQ Chess franchise opportunities

Gardiner Chess is looking to set up chess coaching operations in the various regional centres of Queensland. We are looking for people with a good knowledge of chess, who like teaching, and who would like to develop a successful business. Please contact Graeme on ggardiner@gardinerchess.com if this interests you.

Queensland Teams League

John Surridge kicks off his Queensland Teams League, and it is shaping up as the strongest teams event held in Queensland for many years, perhaps in history. At this stage there are four very strong teams in Premier Division, and six strong teams in B grade.

Amir Karibasic, who has a great love for chess, has emerged as a key ‘mover and shaker’ on the Gold Coast, putting together a very competitive team in Premier grade to match up with Bullwinkle, Redcliffe and Logan. The first round (of 6 rounds) is scheduled for the Gardiner Chess Centre on Sunday 25th February at 1pm.

Gibraltar Masters

Unfortunately Moulthun Ly just missed out on his third IM norm at the Gibraltar Masters. He needed a win against Subbarama Vijayalakshmi 2459 in the last round, and played the King’s Gambit. A wild game ensued, but bad luck Moulthun. Still the good news is that we may get to see Moulthun gain his third and final IM norm at the Doeberl Cup, or Sydney International Open in April or even the Oceanic Zonal scheduled for Fiji in May. These three tournaments may also give Moulthun the opportunity to push his FIDE rating over 2400.
