Summer School Holidays at the Chess Centre

As usual, we have a couple of weeks of chess for the kids at the centre during the summer school hols.

Our summer rapid chess comps are held every morning and afternoon (9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30 to 4.30pm) for the week commencing Monday 15 January. There are half day, day and week rates. Each competition is Queensland Junior rated, so provides a great opportunity for the kids to improve their chess and their rating.

Our 4 day daytime chess camp will be held from Monday to Thursday, 22 to 25 January, from 9am to 5pm each day. This involves a substantial chess coaching component, as well as rated competitions, and chess and non-chess activities. There are full day and individual day rates available.

Full details can be found at www.gardinerchess.com.

Queensland Teams League

Round one of this competition commences on Sunday 25 February. The organiser, CAQ Deputy President John Surridge, has put a lot of work into organising this important addition to the Queensland scene, and thoroughly deserves to succeed. Don't let him down, make sure you get your club properly organised to enter teams in the various divisions.

Australian Juniors

Only a week to go and our party of 40, comprising one organiser, 4 coaches, 10 parents and 25 players is ready to go. We also have 10 players coming in for coaching each day. Our party includes players from Gold Coast and Brisbane, and even a couple from Sydney. So let's see how these young players go. The official website is at www.actjcl.org.au/ausjuniors2007/details.php.

Australian Open

At the time of writing, Zong Yuan Zhao is leading the Australian Open by a full point on 7/8. Tony Truscott, Oleg Korenevski and Alexander Jule are the best placed Queenslanders in the open event with 3.5/8. Unfortunately IM Stephen Solomon and Moulthun Ly are not playing this time. Brian Thomas is joint leader of the Australian Major on 4.5/5 with one round to go. http://www.actjcl.org.au/ausopen2006/index.html.

Gibraltar Masters

I understand that Moulthun Ly will be playing in the Gibraltar Masters from 23 Jan to 1 Feb and aiming for his third IM norm. At the time of writing 32 GMs have entered for this event, including 11th seed Victor Korchnoi and 25th seed Ian Rogers. IM David Smerdon will also be playing and chasing another GM norm. Full details at www.gibraltarchesscongress.com/Gib2007/Home.html.

Queensland Clubs Teams Championship

This was held at The Gap SHS on Sunday 3 December. Club Bullwinkle won the adult event from Logan City and Brisbane, whilst Gold Coast won the junior event from Brisbane, with Gold Coast 2 and 3 sharing third place.

Queensland Lightning Championship and AGM

Bill Powell was elected as President of the CAQ at the AGM. Bill has ambitious plans for 2007, including a big commitment to the development of regional chess right around Queensland. We wish you all the best Bill. The other council members elected were Vice President John Surridge, Secretary Brian Thomas, Treasurer Ian Murray, Membership Secretary Gail Young, Ratings officer Patrick Byrom, Development Officer Dion Sampson, Publicity Officer Bill Powell, Regional Liaison Officer Beng Goh.

The AGM was preceded by the CAQ Lightning Championships, won once again by IM Stephen Solomon. Kevin Casey came second, and Jacob Edwards third.

Visit from Nanyang Primary School, Singapore

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week entertaining 16 students and 3 staff from Nanyang Primary School, Singapore to a chess immersion programme. They are eager to return, and perhaps will encourage more schools from the South East Asia region to come here. The students were coached by GM Dejan Antic, IM Peter Froehlich and Kerry Corker - all did a great job. Some of their students returned to Singapore to participate in the 2nd Asian Schools Chess Festival, with Jordan Yap winning the under 11s, and Daniel Chan coming 2nd in the under 13s. Full details at www.gardinerchess.com  and www.singaporechess.org.sg/

Gold Coast Junior Masters

The Gold Coast Junior Masters for Term One 2007 will commence on Monday 12 February. We are trialling an earlier start at 4.30pm, with an optional advanced lesson commencing at 4pm. An indication of minimum rating is QJ 800, although very keen players in the high 700s could be accepted. During this year we hope more players will attain a FIDE rating, and that some will get an ACF rating of over 2000. The overall aim of the programme is to give suitable opportunities for those who wish to become champion players.

Master of the Endgame Course

Kerry Corker's course recommences on Friday 2 February (6 to 7.30pm). Many of the players who have completed Kerry's course have gone on to become champions. Kerry takes students very thoroughly through all aspects of endgame play in a structured form, although, paradoxically, he mixes his lessons up in a most enterprising and inspiring way.

After-School Chess at the Chess Centre

This recommences on Tuesday 30 January. There will be no after-school chess at the centre on Mondays to make way for the Junior Masters competition. However, please note that Christine Broadway will be running a small 'all girls' group on Mondays.

IQ Chess franchise opportunities

We are pleased to advise that we have signed up our first franchisee for IQ Chess. David Cowland-Cooper, a former captain of Somerset College chess, will be commencing the Far North Queensland franchise based in Cairns at the start of term one, 2007. We couldn't have hoped for a better individual to commence our first franchise operation, and we wish David all the very best in this new initiative.

Gardiner Chess is looking to set up chess coaching operations in the various regional centres of Queensland. We are looking for people with a good knowledge of chess, who like teaching, and who would like to develop a successful business. Please contact Graeme on ggardiner@gardinerchess.com if this interests you.
