Visit by Grandmaster Dejan Antic -
he is available for private or schools coaching

Serbian Grandmaster Dejan Antic is staying with us for the next three weeks. He speaks excellent English and is available at the chess centre for private lessons, or in schools for coaching, simultaneous displays etc. Please email us if you are interested in securing Dejan's services.

Arianne Caoili in Dancing with the Stars

With only three weeks to go in Dancing with the Stars, Arianne is still there. With popular, high profile stars like Tamzin Lewis and Andrew Gaze competing, we are sure Arianne can do with every vote she can get. Arianne can be a big winner here, and so can chess. So please get behind her, and send in your votes.

Upcoming Schools Team Opportunity

The Mt Carmel Primary Schools Comp will be held at the Marymac Centre, this Thursday 16 November. Contact Patrick Byrom on  byronpa@hotmail.com.

Gold Coast Lightning and Transfer Championships at the Centre Sunday 26 November

Two competitions on the one day. In the morning grab a partner and enter the transfer comp. If you can't find a partner, we will help you. In the afternoon you can enter the lightning comp. Both competitions are 13 rounds at lightning time controls. This has always been a popular competition in the past.

The Humble Pawn Teams Event starts this Wednesday at 7.15pm

If you are a Gold Coaster, don't miss out on our annual teams event, which runs for five Wednesdays starting 15 November. To join a team, contact Kerry Corker on karpova9@yahoo.co.uk or Graeme Gardiner at the chess centre. Brisbane players also welcome if you don't mind the drive down the freeway.

CAQ Teams Events

The CAQ teams event is coming up on Sunday 3rd December at the The Gap State High School. This has proved to be a popular event over the last two or three years and well worth supporting. Clubs can enter as many adult teams of 8, and junior teams of 4 as they wish. The more the merrier. Contact Brian Thomas brian_thomas_au@yahoo.com.au or 0429 487610.

John Surridge of the Logan Club is organising a big club teams event for 2007. He has put a lot of effort into this, and again it is very well worth supporting. In years gone by club teams events were the life-blood of the chess scene, and all players are strongly urged to support their club efforts. If successful, John's plans will go a long way to reinvigorating the Queensland chess scene, which has seen a resurgence in 2006 largely through Bill Powell's efforts as publicity officer. Details of this teams event can be found at http://members.optusnet.com.au/loganchess/2007QLDTeams.html

CAQ AGM and Lightning Tournament
Sat 2nd December

This important meeting commences at 2.30pm. It is hoped that all clubs will be represented in order to have their say, and vote. For the first time in several years, there are several candidates standing for election. The lightning event follows the meeting.

IQ Chess franchise opportunities

Gardiner Chess is looking to set up chess coaching operations in the various regional centres of Queensland. We are looking for people with a good knowledge of chess, who like teaching, and who would like to develop a successful business. Please contact Graeme on ggardiner@gardinerchess.com

Summer School Holidays at the Chess Centre

As usual, we have a couple of weeks of chess for the kids at the centre during the summer school hols.

Our summer rapid chess comps are held every morning and afternoon for the week commencing Monday 15 January. There are half day, day and week rates. Each competition is Queensland Junior rated, so a great opportunity for the kids to improve their chess and their rating.

Our 4 day daytime chess camp will be held from Monday to Thursday 22 to 25 January from 9am to 5pm each day. This involves a substantial chess coaching component, as well as rated competitions, and chess and non-chess activities.

Brisbane Chess Camps and Brisbane Young Masters series

Unfortunately these two activities in Brisbane are being suspended until such time as we can work out how to gain greater support. We are convinced of the merit of both activities, and so we hope it won't be too long before we re-launch them.

Australian Open, Canberra
Thurs 28 Dec 06 to Tues 9 Jan 07

This is shaping up to be a very good event. The venue sounds very good, the Southern Cross Sports Club, Tuggeranong.
