World Championship - Kramnik v Topalov

Have you been watching the big game, and the dispute regarding the number of visits to the toilet made by Kramnik? Chess seems to lend itself to controversy, and this match was no exception. Kramnik won the play-off, so it seems that a lengthy and costly legal dispute has been avoided. Full details at the official site www.worldchess2006.com/main.asp.

Arianne Caoili in Dancing with the Stars

It is amazing what a single punch on a dance floor can lead to. Nineteen-year-old Arianne, who attended Somerset College from grade one, was dancing with world number 7 Lev Aronian from Armenia during the Chess Olympiad in Turin, when jealous English Grandmaster Danny Gormally thumped Aronian, sparking a worldwide media blitz.

The story made front page news around the world, including The Times in England, The Australian, the Courier Mail and the Gold Coast Bulletin. As Arianne’s home is still at Robina on the Gold Coast, the Gold Coast Bulletin went to town, following up a full front page article, with two further pages in the same issue, and five consecutive full pages in the following Saturday issue.

Now Arianne is contracted to Channel 7 for Dancing with the Stars, and New Idea magazine. She was the star on one episode of Deal or No Deal, and has generally carried out a wide range of media functions with a great deal of confidence. Chess is certainly a winner at the moment, because Arianne projects an interesting and positive image.

So follow Arianne in Dancing with the Stars on Tuesdays at 7.30pm.

Incidentally, Arianne is now Australia’s number one rated female player on the latest ACF ratings list.

Statewide Sponsor required for the Inter-Schools Teams Champs

In 2007 we are aiming to continue to develop the Queensland Inter-Schools competition in every region. In this regard we are seeking a naming rights sponsor for the entire competition, and local sponsors for each region. Considering the number of competitors, and the huge reach of the competition in an important market, this is a significant opportunity for a potential sponsor.

Gold Coast Junior Masters Term 4
starts on Monday 16 October

This competition is going from strength to strength, with three grades. Gene Nakauchi, who has just turned 11, showed his talent and rising star by winning the super junior masters in term 3 with a fantastic score of 8.5/9. Well played Gene. There is a whole group of ambitious juniors snapping at Gene’s heels, and it is wonderful to see some great chess being played. IM Peter Froehlich and Craig Duxbury will be analysing the games.

This competition is held at the Gardiner Chess Centre.

Brisbane Young Champions

Unfortunately, due to insufficient numbers for Term 4, this competition, normally held at Café Checocho, West End, will not go ahead.

In Term 3, Alex O’Flynn hung on to win the event from Yi Liu and Lachlan van den Bergh.

Gold Coast Individual Age Championships Tues/Wed 17/18 October

This is the one opportunity each year for students to play just others born in the same year.

Brisbane Individual Age Championships
Wed 25 October

As per the Gold Coast Individual Age, this is a school-based competition, but unlike schools competitions held earlier in the year, it is not a teams event.

Trip to Coffs Harbour Open
Sat/Sun 11/12 November

I will be taking a group on the chess bus to this Grand Prix event. To book a place, please email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com The cost of two nights accommodation and transport is $120.

Humble Pawn Teams Event starts on Wednesday 15 November

Kerry Corker is kindly organising this important event on behalf of Gardiner Chess. He has some very interesting ideas. There will be six teams of 10 players – Mudgeeraba, Nerang, Robina, Northern Suburbs, Eastern Suburbs and Burleigh Bishops (Southern Suburbs). The tournament runs for five consecutive Wednesday nights – 15 November to 13 December starting at 7.15pm each week.

There will be generous cash board prizes for individuals. The team prize is simply ‘possession’ of the famous humble pawn trophy. This trophy was turned out of a chunk of timber which was hewn from a rogue tree which was threatening the very existence of the chess centre.

Team captains will be able to pick teams from their own geographic area, with the option to choose up to four wildcards after the anti-tampering deadline.

If you are interested in playing in a team, please contact Kerry Corker at karpova9@yahoo.co.uk

QWCL November Weekender
Sat/Sun 18/19 November

This is an ACF Grand Prix Cat 2 event, and will be held at the Greenbank RSL Library, Hillcrest. There are some very generous prizes including $500 + trophy for first, second and third. Contact Gail Young on 3372 8077 or qwcl@hotmail.com

Kerry Corker is continuing with his Master of the Endgame Course on Friday evenings at the chess centre from 6 to 7.30pm. Please contact us if you would like to join the group. Remember that many of those who have completed the course have gone on to become the top juniors in Queensland.

Gold Coast Transfer Championship
Sunday 26 November

This popular teams event starts at 9am, and there are generous prizes. 13 rounds, 5 mins a side.

Gold Coast Lightning Championship
Sunday 26 November

We continue after lunch with the lightning competition, and again there are very generous prizes. 13 rounds, 5 mins a side.

Queensland Club Teams Championship
Sunday 3 December

The Chess Association of Queensland will be running their successful teams event at the Bridge Centre, Woolloongabba. This is for adult and junior teams.

Chess Association of Queensland

The CAQ has a new President. Bill Powell of Coolum has had two previous terms as President, and is passionate about developing chess in all areas of Queensland.

Former President Howard Duggan has stood down after five years in the job. Howard was very strong in governance, and liked to develop good process in all aspects of chess. He was a particularly strong debater, and I personally saw that he was a very strong voice on the ACF. I understand that Howard will continue to frequent the chess scene, and I’m sure that we all wish him well. Thanks Howard.

Australian Open, Canberra

ACF NEWSLETTER

The newsletter of the Australian Chess Federation Inc.
Acting Editor: Denis Jessop, ACF President

No. 385
17 October 2006

Welcome back to the ACF Newsletter albeit in a leaner form than before, at least for the present. There are still problems with the ACF Website that contribute to this and to the restricted circulation of this issue. I hope to have these resolved by the next one. I also do not have access to the advertising graphics at present so I have had to include the advertisements as text at the end

The ACF Council has appointed me as acting Editor pending resolution of a permanent appointment at or soon after the Council meeting following the National Conference on 6 January 2007. Meanwhile the Council is also moving to appoint a new Webmaster for which we have two applications. This is an essential step to making stable and satisfactory arrangements for our website in the future.

ACF Elections
The time for nominating for the position of ACF President expired on 8 October 2006. There was only one nomination – Gary Wastell, currently ACF Deputy President and President of Chess Victoria. Under the Constitution Gary thus becomes President-elect and his appointment will be confirmed at the National Conference to be held in Canberra on 6 January 2007. Gary brings to the position a wealth of experience in chess administration at both State and ACF level extending over many years.

Nominations for the other elected office bearers will be accepted until the time for the elections at the National Conference. Those officers are Deputy President, Vice President (2), Secretary and Treasurer. I have indicated a willingness to stand as a Vice President but so far no other nomination has been received.

ACF Council
The next ACF Council meeting will be held on Monday, 30 October 2007 and a report on any significant decisions made at that meeting will appear subsequently. [minor change from advance version distributed to my short contact list a couple of days ago – Ed.]

Australian Open Championships 2006/2007

Shaun Press, one of the principal organisers, sends us this update on progress:

Preparations for the 2007-07 Australian Open are well underway. The event runs from the 28th December 2006 to the 9th January 2007. Not only is there the Australian Open Championship but there will also be 1 week events for players rated Under 2000 (Major), Under 1600 (Minor) and Over 50 years (Senior).
For the Open Championship the organisers are negotiating the appearance of 6 GMs for the event, making it the strongest Australian Open in 20 years. And if that isn't reason enough for entering, over $15,000 in prizes will be on offer over the fortnight.

Full details (including entry forms) for the event are available online at http://www.actjcl.org.au/ausopen2006

Australian Junior Championships 2007

Libby Smith, the Director of this event, has provided a recent update:

We are approaching our first deadline. The "extra-early" entry bonus (FREE t-shirt and water bottle) expires on 31 October. Please make sure the deadline is publicised amongst your local juniors. We don't want the kids to miss out on their "freebies" and (importantly for us) a clear indicator of predicted numbers for January will assist us in planning the event overall.

Key dates -
31 October - enter by this date for a FREE t-shirt and water bottle
1 December - enter before this date for discounted entry fee of $80 (late entry 1/12-22/12 $95)
22 December - all entries CLOSE.
Copies of the entry form can be downloaded from http://www.actjcl.org.au/ausjuniors2007/downloads/entry_form.pdf

Entries appear on the website once payment is confirmed. Your entry must be confirmed for you to qualify for your t-shirt & water bottle!

If any players are encountering problems with their entry or are worried about confirmation of their entry they can contact Jenny Wilkinson ausjuniors@internode.net Please note that sizes 6-16 are children's sizing (narrower fit) and S-XXL are adult (longer, generous sizing) when ordering the t-shirts.

We can confirm full sponsorship of the Rapid Play and Puzzle-Solving sections of the event that will see 100% of entry fees returned to participants and we hope to finalise a similar arrangement for the Lightning section of the event. These events are being entered online but can be entered at the tournament. Please note that players don't get the FREE shirt and water bottle if they ONLY enter the Rapid, Lightning & Problem-Solving. The free offer applies to entries into the main sections of the tournament.

Other items of (possible) interest on the website include our - regularly being updated - "fun things to do" page http://www.actjcl.org.au/ausjuniors2007/fun.php On each day of the tournament players will have the chance to win entry passes, meals and merchandise from a mix of local attractions. These will be awarded by lucky draw so any child can be a winner! We also have a bunch of other prizes to give away, some special daily awards from our arbiters and others for the children who volunteer to enter their own game each day. We hope to reward excellence and have fun over the course of the event!

If it's only 75 days until Christmas I guess it must be less than 100 days to the Juniors!
