We now have a group of 28 flying to Canberra for this important annual event. There are a few others making their own travel and accommodation arrangements who will be joining our group for coaching etc.
Gardiner Chess has organised a complete package deal. We will be flying with Virgin on 13 January and returning on 27 January, which is just before the start of term one on 29 January. All Queensland juniors are welcome to be part of our 'team'. The package includes return air fares, accommodation at Sundown Motel Resort, Narrabundah www.sundownvillage.com.au/, insurance, all meals (mostly home-cooked), entry fees to the main, rapid and lightning events and excursions (eg movies, ice skating etc). Our accommodation is 5-10 mins walk from the playing venue at Hotel Heritage. Parents are welcome to stay as part of the team.
Prices: Kids $1,500, Adults $1,300.

Optional Extra: For best results, daily preparation by one of our coaches is highly recommended. Each coach will be responsible for coaching approximately 8 juniors. Each of them is guaranteed a minimum of 8 hours 'one-on-one' coaching during the event. The cost of this optional coaching is $300. This needs to be booked at the same time as the package, as we have to know how many coaches to take as part of our team.

The full amount is payable by 30 November at the latest. Payment can be made at the chess centre, or via our webpage.

IQ Chess logo
Chess Coaches required in Regional Queensland!
Ian Murray and Graeme Gardiner have just returned from Northern Queensland where they were running the inter-schools finals in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. It is clear from conversations with teachers that they would welcome the provision of ongoing chess coaching services similar to that already offered in many schools in South East Queensland.
Since it is impossible for our organisation to extend our services any further outside our current boundaries, we have established a franchise arm named IQ Chess. We offer our franchisees comprehensive training, a large arsenal of resources and opportunities for great personal development.
For this reason we are seeking individuals with the following attributes to commence an IQ Chess franchise in various regions of Queensland:
  • Ambitious/confident/business-minded
  • Capable of teaching and communicating with primary students
  • Reasonably strong, keen chess player
  • Confident in the use of computer programmes like MS Excel and Word
Unlike many franchises, this is a low cost operation, with a modest initial outlay and service charges, that can easily be operated from home. There is the potential for excellent job satisfaction and good income. If you are interested, please call us on (07) 5522 7221.

Why Lasker Matters by Andrew Soltis. Batsford Chess. 320 pages.
This book has just about everything! You can use it as a chess course in the following way. As an opening manual it supplies the latest theory of the time and an update to present day chess. You learn a bit about openings from 1889 to 1936 from the text and look up similar relevant games on Chess Assistant 9. You then incorporate the interesting updates on the opening supplied by GM Soltis with the historical data gained from the game itself and your database. Mix this with the various opening duels that Lasker had over the years, and you have a good guide to any of the modern openings you chose to play.
From the middle-game we get our chess psychology lesson. In fact the book’s main purpose is to reveal how Lasker played chess. If we can understand this then we can work out how he stayed world champion for 27 years and was the strongest player in history over 70 years until Kortchnoi.
My own observation is that he slowly but surely moved a group of his pieces from one side of the board to the other and then mated the King! It sounds simplistic, until you try to apply it to your own games. The endgames are a great example of a master technician at work. He doesn’t appear flashy in the endgame – just methodical and correct. Any chess coaches rushing to a lesson without anything planned (tsk, tsk!) have only to open this book on any page and start reading. The lesson has begun!
Starting Out Chess Series by Everyman Chess. Various titles such as Starting Out: The Scotch Game, Rook Endings, The French, The Nimzo-Indian etc.
The authors include the crème-de-la-crème of English Grandmasters who can really write and relate chess information to their chosen audience. GMs Emms, Ward, Gallagher, Flear, McDonald and IMs Jacobs and Shaw are but a few of the top writers. See the Gardiner Chess Centre webpage for more titles and authors.
These books provide a solid background on many different aspects of chess. If you know nothing about the French but keep losing to it – or nothing about the Scotch but would like to play it, then this series will save you a lot of time. They all come with a good introduction and clear index. Games by the World’s top GMs feature throughout the series. A lot of these books have been generated by the repertoires of players such as Kasparov, Short, Anand etc. Themes are used extensively so that you don’t have to simply memorise. The Modern variation of the French for instance has: The Introduction, The Modern Main Line, The Tarrasch Treatment, The Greek Gift - all extensively annotated. At the end of each section you have illustrative games to reinforce what has been learned.
All books come with a good index of variations at the back to track down a line quickly. The skull and crossbones are a pointer to dangerous moves or situations as they appear. When building your own repertoire, books like Winning Chess Openings by Seirawan are a very good starter, to be followed by one of the Starting Out series for an in-depth look.
