As we've
previously mentioned,
Alexandra Jule
and
Jessica Kinder
have been selected to represent Australia at the World
Juniors to be held in Batumi, Georgia on the Bla ck Sea
from 20 to 31 October 2006.
As you would
imagine, this will not be a cheap exercise, so we are
urging chess players to get behind them. Alex is the
current Australian Girls Champion and Jess is the
current Australian Girls Masters Champion.
This
enterprising duo will be running two tournaments on
Sunday 13 August at the Gardiner Chess Centre. In the
morning there will be a
lightning
event, 15 rounds
5 mins a side starting at 9am. In the afternoon there
will be a
rapid
tournament, 7 rounds 15 mins a side starting at 1.30pm.
The girls are also organising a sausage sizzle at
lunchtime. Please note that 100% of the entry fees will
be going to the girls' travel fund, as well as profits
from the sausage sizzle and café sales.
There will be an exciting list of
non-cash prizes, donated by local businesses, parents
etc. To keep you guessing, these prizes will not be
announced until the day. Adults and children are most
welcome, with the same entry fee for everyone, that is
$10 each for the lightning and rapid events, or $15 for
both, and a late fee of $5 if you enter on the day. You
can enter at the chess centre, or online at
www .gardinerchess.com
Please support the
girls and have some fun at the same time. We have
received several donations to their joint travel fund.
Further donations, however small, will be gratefully
received.
Somerville House Schools

both to be very well attended.

Book
Reviews by

Corker
How to Reassess Your Chess by
IM Jeremy Silman - 400 pages. $42 plus postage if mailed
If
your chess goal is 2000 ACF or FIDE, this is the book
for you. First read Silman, then move on to Watson and
Dvoretsky. “Imbalances and the Silman thinking
technique” is one of the best chapters.
“Here is a breakdown of the different
imbalances” Superior Minor Piece, Pawn structure, Space,
Material, Control of key file or square, Lead in
development, Initiative. The explanations are brilliant.
This book opens up the world of
positional play and prepares you for Watson and
Dvoretsky. Many of my former Gold Coast and Brisbane
students have read this book and gone on to win state
and national titles. Good for Adults and Juniors rated
over 900 QJRL.
Wonderboy by GM
Simen Agdestein - 190 pages $40 plus postage if mailed.
Magnus was highly
annoyed by his weak play in the second game against
number one rated player in the world, Kasparov. His
unforgettable comment, “I played like a child”. There is
a reason for that, he was only 13 at the time – and he
drew the first game! This is an interesting story by
Simen Agdestein, former world class soccer player,
former Gold Coast visiting coach and current Norwegian
Grandmaster. It chronicles the story of Magnus Carlsen,
Grandmaster at 13. In the preface, the author says,
“Many fine games are included in this book. I have tried
to annotate these so that they can be easily understood,
in the hope of making them accessible even for those who
have a limited knowledge of chess.” There are heaps of
photos, annotated games and also a good story. Suitable
for parents and players of all strengths.< /SPAN>
Beautiful
Chess Sets
We have recently imported from the chess capital of the
world (so they claim in Amritsar, India) a range of
beautiful, Staunton style, double and triple weighted
pieces and boards. They are superbly finished. Pay us a
visit to see them at the chess centre.

Reports
and Tournament Notices
Reports and tournament notices are most welcome for
inclusion in this bulletin. Please email
info@gardinerchess.com.
Webpage
There are a number of upcoming events promoted in this
bulletin. Entry leaflets can be downloaded and printed
from our webpage. All Gardiner Chess events, and some
other events, can be entered online with your credit
card number using the secure 'pay online' button. |
These weekend
events will be held at the chess centre, in, for once, a
kids-free zone!
That's right adults, for once you don't have to lose
points to those vastly under-rated, rapidly improving
juniors. This tournament doubles as the
Qld Vets and Disabled Championships. If
there are enough entries for the Qld Vets and Disabled
tournament, it will be run as a separate event.
You can enter at the chess centre, or
online.
IQ Chess Franchise
Opportunities
Gardiner Chess is
currently running ongoing chess coaching programmes in
approximately 100 schools in South East Queensland. We
are finding that many schools are now sitting up and
taking notice of the well-documented research results
showing the educational benefits for children who learn
to play chess and are approaching us for help. Chess
coaching is a new and rapidly growing profession in
Australia and we want to ensure that those undertaking
this important role are fully versed in all aspects of
teaching chess to children.
Since it is
impossible for our organisation to extend our
services any further outside our current boundaries, we
have established a franchise arm named
IQ Chess.
We
offer our franchisees comprehensive training, a large
arsenal of resources and opportunities for great
personal development.
For this reason we
are seeking individuals with the following attributes to
commence an IQ Chess franchise in various regions of
Queensland:
-
Ambitious/confident/business-minded
-
Capable of teaching and
communicating with primary students
-
Reasonably strong, keen chess
player
-
Confident in the use of computer
programmes like MS Excel and Word
Unlike many
franchises, this is a low cost operation, with a modest
initial outlay and service charges, that can easily be
operated from home. There is the potential for excellent
job satisfaction and good income. If you are
interested, please call us on (07) 5522 7221.
Brisbane Primary

the Marymac Centre Monday 18 September
(High Schools Tuesday 19 September, same venue)
All schools are most
welcome, even if they didn't enter previous rounds. For
details go to

(schools/Brisbane)
Gold Coast Inter-Schools Finals
Wed 13 September at Carrara Basketball Stadium
This
year there is a serious effort underway to achieve an
Australian record of 1,000 students at one venue at one
time. The support of all local schools would be
appreciated!
Gold Coast Junior Masters and
Brisbane Young Champions Tournaments
These events, for juniors who would like to strive to
be champions, are now a fixture in the chess calendar
each term. The aim is to give our keenest juniors the
experience necessary to be competitive at state and
national level. Games are at least 75 mins a side plus
30 secs a move (Fischer), and are followed with
after-game analysis by strong adult players including
IM Peter Froehlich.
Want to be a champion? Get your Queensland Junior
rating up to around 800 at least by playing in lots of
rated tournaments, and then contact us to enter for next
term.
Kerry Corker’s Master of the Endgame
Course
Of the 18 juniors
participating in
Kerry Corker’s Master of the Endgame Course on
Friday evenings in term 2, 16 had an increase in their
Queensland Junior rating. There are still a couple of
places available for this term.
David
Hughes and
Danielle Kinder are currently leading Kerry’s
Scramble competition. Contact the chess centre if you
would like to enrol.
Private Lessons
Private
lessons are proving more and more popular at the chess
centre. If cost is a consideration, you can always
consider having two sharing a private lesson.
Development of
chess at all levels and in all regions of Queensland
CAQ Vice
President and Publicity Officer Bill Powell has been on
a mission to generate lots of activity on the Queensland
chess scene in recent months. Those who know Bill Powell
will remember from his years as CAQ President that he
always drums up enthusiasm; he has every region of
Queensland in his sights, and is always putting
Queensland chess first.
Bill is
setting out on a series of visits to various clubs so
that he can listen to what locals have to say about the
development of chess in Queensland, which will help him
with the development of plans and discussions on CAQ
Council. In this regard he will be attending the
committee meeting of the Gold Coast Chess Club to be
held at the Gardiner Chess centre next Thursday 4 August
at 7pm. The committee have issued an open invitation for
anyone in the Gold Coast chess community who would like
to come along and have a say about the future of chess
in Queensland.
Australian Junior Championships,
Canberra, January 2007
Canberra will be the centre of
Australian chess activity in the upcoming Christmas
school holidays. Firstly, the Australian Schools Teams
will be held there on the weekend of 11/12 December.
Then the Australian Open will be held from 28 December
to 9 January. See
www.caq.org.au/htm/australian_open_2006.doc
Finally, the Australian Juniors will be held from 14
to 26 January. The webpage for both the Australian
Schools and Australian Juniors is at
www.actjcl.org.au/ausjuniors2007/.
Gardiner Chess has put together a complete package
deal for Queenslanders to attend the Australian Juniors
which includes air flights, accommodation, insurance,
all meals, entry fees and entertainment. We also have
top level coaches with us, and this cost is optional.
Full details of this package at
www.gardinerchess.com.
Those juniors travelling to Canberra should consider
the use of a good database programme like Chessbase or
Chess Assistant. We stock both at Gardiner Chess along
with a complete range of chess products.
Thanks for reading this long
newsletter!
All the very best in chess
