June Chess Festival As usual, with the annual visit of Grandmaster Ian Rogers and his wife Cathy, we have heaps of good chess coming up on the Gold Coast in the next 3-4 weeks. Ian arrives this Sunday, and will be coaching in various schools in Brisbane and the Gold Coast next week. On Monday he will be analysing games from the final round of the Junior Masters, and presenting prizes. This Wednesday evening he will be featuring in a skittles competition at the chess centre. This is a kind of handicap event and should prove to be a lot of fun. He will be playing in the Gold Coast Open at Carrara next weekend 24/25 June, which is the third largest Grand Prix event in Australia this year. Following on from that he will be coaching the national junior training squad on Monday, and then providing after-game analysis to players for all four days of the Queensland Junior Championships. Finally he will be making a presentation to Gardiner Chess coaches at our professional development day on Sunday 2 July. Gold Coast and Brisbane Chess Camps Mon, Tues, Wed and Fri 3, 4, 5 and 7 July Our usual school holiday chess camps will be held at the Gardiner Chess Centre (Gold Coast) and Marymac Centre (Annerley) in the second week of the June/July school holiday. These are very popular events for juniors, and incorporate a good mix of coaching, chess activities, tournaments and non chess activities. On the Gold Coast we will have three coaches each day, and the cafe will be open as usual. In Brisbane, we will have two coaches each day, and juniors are advised to bring their own lunch. Runaway Bay Shopping Village Junior Tournament Thursday 6 July The shopping centre junior tournaments are always extremely popular, with turnouts nearly always well exceeding 100. Many turned around unable to make it through the floods. But still an amazing 42 turned up. We hope to see you there, rain or shine. Juniors of all standards most welcome. Brisbane Young Champions and Gold Coast Junior Masters The playing standard in each of these events continues to improve term by term. If you are a junior, are very keen on improving your chess, and have a rating of 800+ (or close to 800), and would like to play, please contact Graeme Gardiner 5522 7221 ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or visit our webpage www.gardinerchess.com (2006 calendar and scroll down to the term 3 starting date 17 July for an entry form) DGT Easy Clocks The new slimline, colourful, easy to use 'Easy' clocks have arrived from Germany. At $50 they are cheaper than the old analogue clocks, and whilst they don't have all the options of the DGT 2000 fairly widely used in Queensland, they still have various options, that make them far more versatile than analogue clocks. They only need two batteries, and these are very easy to change. To see what they look like, go to www.dgtprojects.com/clock_easy.htm. Gardiner Chess has a wide range of chess products available, at prices cheaper or comparable with other suppliers in Australia. We will be running a chess shop at the Gold Coast Open. See you then. Chessbase 9 Starter Packs We have a few remaining copies of Chessbase 9 Starter Pack. The normal price is $275, but our price whilst stocks last is $190. Students playing in the Gold Coast Junior Masters and Brisbane Young Champions series can purchase it for the ridiculous price of just $150, also whilst stocks last. Virtually all serious chess players have Chessbase!! Various News We hope you followed the Chess Olympiad in Turin. David Smerdon came very close indeed to gaining the coveted Grandmaster title. He will now be heading off to Germany in August with the aim of finally gaining the title. Kieran Lyons had a very good result for Fiji on board one. Arianne Caoili didn't have her best result on board three for Australia, but created a massive amount of publicity for chess. Appararently she was dancing the Salsa at the Bermuda party with world number three Levon Aronian, who she has known since she was 10 years old, when English GM Danny Gormally, who had apparently taken a liking to Arianne, flattened Aronian with a big right hook. The incident sparked a big media frenzy right around the world, including The Times in England. Australian media outlets including The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald carried front page articles. Locally, the Gold Coast Bulletin carried the story as a full front page news headline and continued with more on page 4. Later, on the weekend, the paper carried five continuous pages just on chess. The good news is that virtually all the articles helped to move chess away from the old 'nerdy' image. See www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3171 Arianne later headed off to play in another tournament in Italy with IM Alex Wohl. See www.lenuvole.org/index.html. Alex, who lived for several years on the Gold Coast, had a wonderful Olympiad, scoring at close to 90%. Well done Alex. Meanwhile, back home, the Gold Coast Rapid event was won for the second year running by Kevin Casey. Congratulations Kevin. IM Stephen Solomon won the Queensland Championship with a picket fence 7/7. The Reserves was won by Mark Stokes. The Brisbane Young Champions was won by a new face, 9 year old Yi Liu who has arrived from Victoria. This was a considerably stronger event than in term one, and we hope it will continue to strengthen in term 3. The final round of the Gold Coast Junior Masters will be held this coming Monday, with GM Ian Rogers analysing games and presenting prizes. With one round to go in the Super Junior Masters, Craig Duxbury (guest adult player, ACF 2071) is leading, having dropped just two draws with Gene Nakauchi and Jessica Kinder. The leading juniors are Daniel Ford and Gene Nakauchi with 5.5, followed by Jessica Kinder on 4.5. In the last few weeks, Ian Murray has been to Roma, Charleville, Mt Isa, Longreach and Warwick running regional inter-school competitions for the first time. Full results for each region can be found at our webpage. Next term he is back off to the big coastal cities, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone and Bundaberg.
