Queensland Open
IM Peter Froehlich has won the Queensland Open over the Easter
weekend with a score of 6.5/7. Craig Duxbury, Phachara Wongwichit,
George Lester and Ross Lam came second equal on 5.5. There was a
very encouraging turnout of 66 players. Congratulations to the CAQ,
and in particular to Bill Powell and Garvin Gray, on promoting this
event so well. Hopefully this will lead to a new trend of increasing
numbers in tournament chess in Queensland. Full results at
www.caq.org.au
Chess Association of Queensland
CAQ is on the move again. All active chess players should support
their state association. The fee is ridiculously cheap at $10 per
annum. It is compulsory to be a member if you want your games to be
rated by the Australian Chess Federation, or if you wish to play in
a state championship. Additionally, you receive periodical
newsletters and various other benefits. Full details, and how to
join, are available at the CAQ webpage (CAQ news and info,
information, membership). Alternatively you can pay at the chess
centre and we will pass it on for you.
Doeberl Cup
The Doeberl Cup had a record entry of 228 players. There were 10
players listed from Queensland, including Luthien Russell (who has
just moved to Canberra), and David Lovejoy who lives in Northern
NSW. (Congratulations to David who finished first in the seniors
ahead of a strong field). Moulthun Ly came very close indeed, with
the black pieces, to defeating GM Darryl Johansen in the
championship event, but he lost in the final round. Victory would
possibly have given Moulthun the title on countback. Earlier
Moulthun held GM Ian Rogers to a draw also with the black pieces.
Gold Coast Junior Masters at the Chess Centre
The Gold Coast Junior Masters and Super Junior Masters for term two
starts this coming Monday 24 April 5.15pm at the chess centre. All
Gold Coast juniors rated 800+ (or possibly slightly below) should
consider entering if they are serious about their chess.
Brisbane Young Champions
The second Brisbane Young Champions event starts at Cafe Checocho,
West End this coming Monday 24 April 5.30pm. All Brisbane juniors
rated 800+ (or possibly slightly below) should consider entering if
they are serious about their chess.
Gold Coast Junior Championships Sat/Sun 6/7 May at the Chess Centre
The Gold Coast Junior Championships is a major junior lead-up event
to the Queensland Junior Championships which are scheduled for the
June school holidays. In turn the Qld Juniors is a lead-up event for
the Australian Championships in January. The Gold Coast Juniors is

Coast). There are titles for open, under 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8.

Redcliffe Peninsula Open 30 April to 1 May
This is the 41st consecutive year that this famous event has been
held. It is a Myer-Tan ACF Grand Prix Class 2 event on the Labour
Day weekend. It is being held at Grace Lutheran College and there
are over $1,500 in prizes. To enter, go to our webpage
www.gardinerchess.com (2006 calendar) and click on the tournament on
the relevant date for an entry form. We also have entry forms on our
front counter. The tournament organiser is Mark Stokes, ph 3205 6042
email tournament@crcchess.com. The Gardiner Chess bus will be taking
juniors once again - please email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com if you
live on the Gold Coast and want a place on the bus.
Gold Coast Rapid Championships Sunday 28 May at the Chess Centre
Our last Sunday event attracted over 70 players, and we hope that we
have similar numbers for this tournament. It is one of our most
popular events for the year.
Gold Coast Open Sat/Sun 24/25 June at Carrara Community Centre
Peter Bender of Outreach Chess is organising this tournament. It is
a Myer-Tan ACF Grand Prix Class 5 event, one of only three class 5
events in Australia this year. The guaranteed prize fund is $5,000.
We would very much like to see the numbers go back over 100 this
year, and with the renewed enthusiasm in Queensland chess, we are
very hopeful that this will be achieved. As usual, Grandmaster Ian
Rogers will be playing.
Chess Olympiad Turin, Italy
The Chess Olympiad, which is the pinnacle of chess for most serious
chess players, and which is held every two years, commences in Turin
on 20 May. The official website is at
www.chessolympiad-torino2006.org/eng/. Log in to this site to watch
live games and see how our Australian team is going. IM David
Smerdon will be playing on board two for Australia in the open
section, with IM Alex Wohl on board five. WIM Arianne Caoili will be
playing on board three for the Australian Women's team.
Gold Coast Active Championships
The winner of this event which was held at the chess centre was IM
Peter Froehlich, from WIM Arianne Caoili and Jonas Muller. 78
players took part.
Queensland Junior Championships - Tues to Fri, 27 to 30 June at the
Chess Centre
This important event will be held at the chess centre from Tues to
Fri 27-30 June. The under 8s will be held on the Tuesday, the under
10s and 12s on the Thurs/Fri, and the under 14s, 16s and 18s on all
four days. Under 8s can also play in the under 10s if they wish.
Australia's number one player and coach, Grandmaster Ian Rogers will
be present on all four days to provide post game analysis to all
players. Keen juniors should not miss this opportunity of receiving
top level advice from GM Rogers, since not only is he a great coach,
but he is also very influential in identifying talent. An entry form
for this event will be available shortly.
Australian Junior Championships, Canberra 14-26 January 2007
Gardiner Chess will soon be offering a package deal for Queensland
juniors who wish to travel and stay as part of a team with highly
credentialled coaches. We have already booked group flights with
Virgin (flying 13 Jan and returning 27 Jan) and booked our
accommodation. If you are interested in receiving details of the
package, please email Graeme on ggardiner@gardinerchess.com. I
believe that Queensland students return to school on Monday 29
January 2007.
New Junior Club at Indooroopilly
Roseanne Blundell of the Queensland Association of Gifted and
Talented Chilldren advises that the association is starting up a
chess club that will be meeting at St Peters Lutheran College,
Indooroopilly. The coaches will probably be Tim Lamberton and Boris
Lukursky. For more information contact Roseanne at rosanne.blundell@qagtc.org.au.
Be part of the fun in setting up a new club.
Ipswich Chess Club to be revived
Bill Powell advises that the Ipswich Chess Club, which has a long
history and has been dormant in recent years, looks as though it
will be revived when Brendan Downs returns from overseas at the end
of May. Debbie Jenkins has offered to be involved in getting the
club up and running again. If you are interested in being involved
in this project, please contact Debbie at debbiejenkins@bigpond.com.
2006 Australian Grand Prix
Well-known chess organiser Brian Jones has completely revamped the
Grand Prix, with important sponsorship from the Myer and Tan
families. According to the webpage at www.chessaustralia.com.au/grandprix/index.cfm
46 events have been entered Australia-wide. Queensland events listed
are:
15 April Queensland Open in Brisbane Cat 2
29 April Peninsula Open in Redcliffe Cat 2
24 June Gold Coast Open in Carrara Cat 5
24 Sept Nell Van De Graaff Classic in Mudgeeraba Cat 2
7 Oct Wendy Terry Memorial in Redcliffe Cat 2
18 Nov Weekender in Brisbane Cat 1
Players earn points according to where they finish in each
tournament, and the category of the tournament.
Further details of each event can be obtained on the hyperlink on
the calendar of events on the Grand Prix webpage. There are $10,000
in cash prizes, and $5,000 in air fares to the Malaysian Open. It
was interesting that in 2005 a couple of Gold Coast kids won prizes
in the Grand Prix without even realising that they were eligible
(Jessica Kinder $350 and Liam McGarity $200). Players have to be
members of their State Association to be eligible.
2006 Queensland Woman's Championship - report from Bill Powell
This event was
held on the 8th & 9th April at the Matthew Flinders Anglican
College, Buderim, Sunshine Coast.
An increase of 16% in entries, who said chess was on a down hill
slide? (Last year 12 this year 14).
While numbers are still very small it may be time that the CAQ
have a good think about the future in marketing of Chess.
I personally think that this year Qld must put plans into action
that will build the future of Qld chess for all ages and for
both male and female members.
On a sad note, while playing in round 1, Melissa Jones' 18 year
old brother was killed while riding his motor bike on the Bli
Bli road.
Two withdrawals, both approved by the Arbiter, Melissa Jones due
to the death of her brother, Linda Hog due to illness.
