Gold Coast Junior Masters, Super Junior Masters and Brisbane Young Champions

For juniors wishing to become champions, and not just aim for ratings prizes, these are the events for you. This is real chess. Championship length games, serious competition and expert after-game analysis are an integral part of these events. Experience the winning chess culture. Don't play for draws, in these events you play to win - or at least you play to learn how to win against top level competition. Players with a QJ rating of less than 800 are unlikely to be ready to particpate in these events. To enter for the term 2 events, please go to www.gardinerchess.com (Calendar for 2006).

In the term 1 Super Junior Masters, which is a 10 player round robin, all players are rated around 1300-1500. But we are finding against adult competition their playing strength is probably 100-200 points higher. Gene Nakauchi, who turns 11 next month, leads the competition by a full point with one round to go. Gene has improved dramatically over the last 18 months. In the Junior Masters Kieton Beilby leads by half a point with two rounds to go. The inaugural Brisbane Young Champions, appears to be a two-way contest between Lachlan van den Begh and Daniel Posner who meet in the final round tomorrow (Monday) evening at Cafe Checocho.

Polo Shirts from Australian Junior Championships

We still have 30 or so very smart looking sports polo shirts left over from the Australian Junior Champiosnhips - kids sizes only. They are made in the cool-dry fabric, and beautifully embroidered with the Australian Championship logos. This is a very practical memento from this historic event, and at only $25, these shirts are a bargain. They are only available to purchase at the chess centre, or if you order with your credit card within the next 10 days, we will mail your shirt post free.

Gold Coast Junior Championships

These will be held at the chess centre over the weekend of 6/7 May. 7 rounds, 30 mins a side + 30 secs a move (Fischer). $440 in prizes. Trophies for winners of under 8s, 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and open under 18s. Entry Fees CAQ Members $30, Non-Members $40, Late entries on the day $10 extra. Excellent preparation for the Queensland Junior Championships.

Gold Coast Rapid Championships

These will be held at the chess centre on Sunday 28 May. Make a diary note now.

World Junior Opportunities

For children wishing to take part in the World Junior Championships, national junior coordinator Brett Tindall has placed an online application form at his webpage www.sydneyacademyofchess.com.au/wjapplication.htm. Due to changes to the ACF by-law all children wishing to play at the World youth needs to go through the selection process and only juniors who are announced after the selection process as being selected will form part of the team.

Ergas National Junior Training Squad

The Ergas national junior training squad for 2006 has been announced. Queenslanders selected are: Molly McGarity, Luthien Russell, Jessica Kinder, Alex Stahnke, Liam McGarity, Gene Nakauchi, Daniel Anderson, Sam Grigg and Ben Lazarus. Reserve Yitao Lei. Congratulations to those talented youngsters. Whilst the main week for the squad will be held in Canberra in October, a one day session will be held at the chess centre on Monday 26 June with GM Rogers. Extra Queensland juniors will be invited for the one day.

Queensland Junior Championships

This important event will be held at the chess centre from Tues to Fri 27-30 June. The under 8s will be held on the Tuesday, the under 10s and 12s on the Thurs/Fri, and the under 14s, 16s and 18s on all four days. Under 8s can also play in the under 10s if they wish. Australia's number one player and coach, Grandmaster Ian Rogers will be present on all four days to provide post game analysis to all players. Keen juniors should not miss this opportunity of receiving top level advice from GM Rogers, since not only is he a great coach, but he is also very influential. An entry form for this event will be available shortly.

Queensland Inter-Schools Teams Championship goes Statewide

Ian Murray, who has been the main mover over the last few years in developing the Queensland Inter-Schools Teams Championship, has been very busy this term. He has already run inter-school competitions in all regions along the coast from Wide Bay to Cairns, and also the first round of the Brisbane competitions. In May he will be heading west to Warwick, Roma, Charleville, Longreach and Mt Isa. For full results, reports and photos of all these competitions, please go to www.gardinerchess.com (Schools). Ian has also motivated plenty of media coverage on his trips, which will help to develop chess all around Queensland.

41st Peninsula Open

This is another opportunity for keen chess players to gain points in the national Grand Prix. The tournament, being held at Grace Lutheran College over the Labour Day long weekend Sat-Mon 29 April to 1 May, is a class 2 event. Total prizes $1,525. Rounds 1-2 60 mins a side + 10 secs (Fischer), Rounds 3-7 90 mins a side + 10 secs (Fischer). Entry Fees Adults $50, Pensioners $45, Juniors $40, Cadets $30. Add $10 if not a CAQ member. Late entries on the day add $10. Full details at www.gardinerchess.com (Calendar for 2006).

Gold Coast Open Sat/Sun 24/25 June.

Peter Bender and Outreach Chess are running the Gold Coast Open this year. Gardiner Chess is the main sponsor, and the event, with $5,000 in prizes, will be one of only three class 5 events in the Grand Prix this year. I'm informed by Peter that plans are well underway, and these include a change of venue to the Carrara Community Centre. So please make your plans now. It would be great to see the attendance back over 100 again. The early signs are that there will be very good interstate representation, led once again by GM Ian Rogers. Hopefully we will see IMs David Smerdon and Stephen Solomon, along with Moulthun Ly, and other leading Queenslanders taking up the challenge. Of course, one of the highlights for us as always, is to see more juniors emerging as serious chess players.

Full details can be found at the site, which is run by well known South Australian chess identities, Alan Goldsmith and Alex Saint.

2006 Australian Grand Prix

Well-known chess organiser Brian Jones has completely revamped the Grand Prix, with important sponsorship from the Myer and Tan families. According to the webpage at www.chessaustralia.com.au/grandprix/index.cfm 46 events have been entered Australia-wide. Queensland events listed are:
14 April Queensland Open in Brisbane Cat 2
29 April Peninsula Open in Redcliffe Cat 2
24 June Gold Coast Open in Robina Cat 5
24 Sept Nell Van De Graaff Classic in Mudgeeraba Cat 2
7 Oct Wendy Terry Memorial in Redcliffe Cat 2
18 Nov Weekender in Brisbane Cat 1
Players earn points according to where they finish in each tournament, and the category of the tournament.

Further details of each event can be obtained on the hyperlink on the calendar of events on the Grand Prix webpage. There are $10,000 in cash prizes, and $5,000 in air fares to the Malaysian Open. It was interesting that in 2005 a couple of Gold Coast kids won prizes in the Grand Prix without even realising that they were eligible (Jessica Kinder $350 and Liam McGarity $200). Players have to be members of their State Association to be eligible.
