Chess Coaching Staff Required Urgently

In restarting our chess programme this term, we are finding it very hard to meet the ever-growing demand by schools for chess coaching services. It is quite common for one school to require three coaches for the one timeslot, and new schools contact us every week. We are therefore looking for chess coaches to join our business in most areas between Noosa and Ballina. But we particularly need a coach in the Capalaba/Alexandra Hills/Ormiston/Cleveland area. Uni students often make ideal coaches, and the pay is a whole lot better than that received by 'checkout chicks'. As the vast majority of students being taught chess in schools are beginners, the playing strength of coaches does not need to be very high. It is more important to be able to connect with kids. Job satisfaction is high for most coaches.

Gardiner Chess provides orientation, resource materials and ongoing professional development. All Gardiner Chess coaches are required by law to hold blue cards issued by the Commission for Children and Young People. Gardiner Chess completes the necessary documentation with the coach, and pays the fee. Any chess player who thinks they would make a good chess coach, and would like to teach (mainly primary) pupils, please contact Graeme Gardiner at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

Australia Internet Junior Championships - Urgent action required

The South Australian Chess Association has organised a series of junior tournaments, to be played from home at one round per week (Sunday evenings) on the internet via Internet Chess Club (
www.chessclub.com)

In terms 2, 3 and 4 there will be events open to all, but the starting event in Term 1 is an interstate teams event. Full details at
www.ausnetchess.org

Entries close next Tuesday 14 February and play starts on Sunday 19 February - six rounds over six weeks.

We need a Queensland team in a hurry - five under 18s, four under 12s and three girls, plus a couple of reserves.

If you'd like to play, please let Ian Murray know immediately. With the short time available, the team will be selected pretty much on a first-come first-served basis.

You will need to play a couple of practice games on ICC before the tournament starts, to get the hang of it.

Contact details: Ian Murray caq@optusnet.com.au phone 3411 3445.
