Brisbane Northside
Junior Chess Club at Nundah Primary commences Wed 9 February
We are very
pleased to say that Gardiner Chess is commencing a new junior chess club in
Brisbane at the large chess room at Nundah Primary School. This will run
along the same lines as the successful after-school chess programme at the
chess centre. There will be a mix of coaching and tournament chess, and the
club will run from 4-6pm on Wednesdays, commencing 9 February. The club will
be for junior players of all standards, from beginner to advanced.
Junior Masters, 8 Tuesdays from 1
Feb to 22 March, at the Chess Centre
This very
successful event will continue once again in term one. A guide for minimum
entry requirments is QJ Rating 800+. Games are 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a
move (Fischer). Post-game analysis is provided by strong coaches such as
Matthew Sonter. A whole string of juniors who have been
regular participants in this event have been leaping up the ratings and
providing very strong competition for highly rated adult players.
Importantly, the event has meant that participants have been very well
prepared for championship chess.
Ruth Coxhill Memorial FIDE Rated
Tournament, 9 Mondays from 14 Feb to 11 April, at the Chess Centre
This is a 10
player, round robin tournament which is internationally rated. Already,
several local players have achieved FIDE ratings through their participation
in this event. The entry fee for non-FIDE-rated players, and for those with
a FIDE rating of under 2000, is $150. Games commence at 6.30pm each week.
FIDE rated players with a rating of 2000+ enter free. Prizes are 1st $300,
2nd $200, 3rd $100.
Queenstown, New Zealand, Chess
Classic 13 to 25 Jan 2006
We are now
taking $100 deposits for this fantastic trip to Queenstown which is simply
an opportunity not to be missed. Great chess, and a location to die for.
Recharge your batteries, and pamper yourself.
The tournament
itself is at a very well-appointed hotel, the Millennium. We will be staying
at the Queenstown Lodge, which has a useful mix of accommodation to suit
most needs and budgets.
We will be
flying Air New Zealand, departing Brisbane Airport on 13 January 2006 and
returning on 25 January.
The package
includes return air fares, 12 days accommodation, cooked breakfasts daily,
travel insurance and the tournament entry fee. The package ranges in price
from $1,300 to $1,970 depending upon the type of accommodation you require
and whether you are an adult or child.
We have not
included lunches, evening meals or excursions in the package to allow
maximum flexibility once we get to Queenstown.
Your $100
deposit will hold your place and price, with the balance payable by 31
October.
Oh, and by the
way, prizes total NZ$30,000!!
Queensland Junior Ratings
The new
Queensland Junior Ratings List is out. Full details at
www.gardinerchess.com (Ratings). There are nearly 2500 junior chess
players on the list. Particular congratulations to Liam McGarity
who topped the most improved and most active sections for 2005, and
Caleb Eriksson who topped the most improved section for the latest
period.
Also
congratulations to Moulthun Ly, who now leads the
Queensland Junior List at the age of 13! At his first visit to the World
Youth Festival in November, Moulthun was Australia's second best performer,
finishing in 14th position on 7.5/11 in the under 14s, just one point behind
the winner. The winner had a rating of 2514 as opposed to Moulthun's 2056.
The next junior in the standings with a rating under 2100 finished in 37th
position. This was an outstanding result for Moulthun.
After-School Chess at the Chess
Centre
The very
popular after-school chess programme recommences at the chess centre on the
first day of term one, Monday 24 January.
Gold Coast Tin Cup Sat/Sun 12/13
February
This is
traditionally a very popular Gold Coast Chess Club event. As usual it is
being held at the Somerset College Sports Pavilion, and it is restricted to
those adults and juniors rated under 1750. There are $1,800 in prizes!
Register and Pay Online
Entry forms for
all of the above tournaments are available at our webpage
www.gardinerchess.com. One of the easiest ways to register is simply to
go to the secure pay fees section, and use your credit card to pay.
Café Checocho
Our friends
Halim Nataprawira and Birgit Stein have
just opened a new chess café called Café Checocho in West End (at
69 Hardgrave Road). It is the same building that used to house Café Bohemia.
The name Checocho denotes a mix of chess, coffee and chocolate - very
appropriate. They have a small but delicious menu, serving home-made meals
and scrumptious looking cakes, and they have a BYO licence. We've tried
their great coffee, and there is a special message that comes with it . .
. but you'll have to visit the café and talk to the owners to find out what
it is.
Australian Junior Championships at
Mt Buller
On Monday we
are taking a group of 12 chess kids to Mt Buller for the Australian Junior
Championships. Our coaches are IM David Smerdon and
Matthew Sonter. Our juniors are Toshi Kimura, Alexandra
Jule, Ric Kaspar, Jessica Kinder, Molly McGarity, Sam Grigg, Yitao Lei,
Leoma Lee, Daniel Barrett, Brendan Baker, Mikio Kimura and
Sebastian Jule. Other Queenslanders who have entered include
Abbie Kanagarajah, Luthien Russell, Todd Anderson, Daniel Anderson
and Moulthun Ly.
Results and
live games can be followed at
www.mtbullerchess.com.
Schools Chess
Gardiner Chess
is now licenced by the CAQ to run the Brisbane, Wide Bay, Central Queensland
South, Central Queensland North, North Queensland and Far North Queensland
Inter-School tournaments. It also runs the Gold Coast event on behalf of the
Gold Coast Chess Club. The local clubs run the Darling Downs and Suncoast
events.
Entry forms for
2005 in respect of Brisbane and the Gold Coast have already gone out. Entry
forms for the other regions will be mailed shortly.
Bridge
Bridge club
continues on Mondays as usual from 9.30am. This year the Mudgeeraba Pairs
Congress is scheduled for Sunday 1 May.
