Brisbane Open - Easter Weekend (Sat, Sun, Mon 26-28 March)
We are pleased to announce that Brisbane now has its own Australian Grand Prix event on the Easter weekend. It is also a rare opportunity to play in an event with championship time controls of 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move (Fischer). There will be 6 rounds, with two rounds a day. The tournament will be an ACF Grand Prix category 2 event with $1,500 in prize money. The location is the Marymac Centre at 616 Ipswich Road Annerley. This venue is carpeted, air conditioned and with good lighting. It has a canteen and bar. The parking is good.
Whilst we encourage local players to go to the Doeberl Cup in Canberra, we realise for the majority of players this is probably not possible for various reasons. Hence we wish to give Brisbane chess players in particular, and Queenslanders in general, this new opportunity.
Australian Championships and Australian Junior Championships 2004
Firstly, many congratulations to Moulthun Ly for his wonderful victory in the Australian Junior Championships held recently in Mt Buller. Moulthun won a two game rapid play-off to defeat Vincent Suttor and become Australia's youngest ever Australian Junior Champion at the age of just 13 years and two months. Well done Moulthun! Moulthun started playing in August 2002, and has improved very rapidly ever since. He does not have a coach, but reads very widely. He also regularly plays up to 100 games of bullet and blitz on ICC. Interestingly, Moulthun is yet to win the Queensland Junior title.
The other Queenslanders to win titles were Alexandra Jule - Australian Under 16 Girls Champion, Australian Girls Lightning Champion and Australian Girls Rapid Champion, Molly McGarity - Australian Girls Under 12 Champion and Australian Girls Under 16 Rapid Champion, Jessica Kinder - Australian Girls Under 14 Lightning Champion, Abbie Kanagarajah -Australian Girls Under 10 Lightning Champion and Australian Girls Under 10 Rapid Champion. Go the girls!
Ian Murray and Graeme Gardiner are currently preparing a proposal for both the CAQ and ACF to hold the Australian Championships and Australian Junior Championships in the city of Brisbane from around 28 December 2005 to 9 January 2006. The proposal will be for both the Australian Championships and the Australian Junior Championships to be held at the same venue, on the same dates, with the juniors starting each day at (say) 11am and the adults starting at (say) 5pm. By finishing both events by 9 January, the many players who wish to head off to Queenstown, NZ for the big Queenstown Classic may do so. Proposals to host these events will be considered by the ACF at their next council meeting, which is due around 27 March.

Queenstown is simply a magnificent destination, surrounded by mountains and situated next to a lovely lake. There’s lots to do and see on spare days. Billed as the adventure capital of the world. Many scenes from Lord of the Rings were filmed in this region. No traffic lights in Queenstown, just roundabouts. If you don't want to do the adventure things, then three excursions (though not included in our package) that may appeal to you are a day trip to the stunning Milford Sound (including cruise), a trip across the lake to the sheep station in the famous steamer TSS Earnshaw, and a trip up the mountain in a gondola for indescribable views and a fantastic seafood smorgasbord. For more information on Queenstown go to http://www.everythingqueenstown.com/.
The tournament will be located at the very well-appointed Millennium Hotel http://www.millenniumqueenstown.co.nz/. NZ$30,000 in prizes. Lots of ratings prizes. 10 rounds starting at 3pm daily. 100 mins a side plus 60 secs a move (Fischer).

Gardiner Chess will be running a new after-school junior chess club in the large chess room at Nundah Primary, commencing next Wednesday 9 February from 4-6pm. For a normal 10 week term the cost will be $70, but as there are only 7 weeks in term one (9 Feb to 23 March) the cost will be $50 for this term. Come along and give it a go.

The Oceanic Zonal has just finished in Auckland, and was won by IM Gary Lane on 7/9 who has coached many Gold Coast kids. Well done Gary! He will now represent the region in the next World Championships. Jonathan Humphrey, with a FIDE rating of just 2150, had an outstanding result, finishing equal second on 6.5/9 and gaining the FM title. He missed out on the coveted IM title on countback. In the last two rounds he defeated FM Alexei Kulashko 2377 and Igor Bjelobrk also 2377. Matthew Sonter and IM Stephen Solomon both scored 5/9. Anastasia Sorokina came second in the women's event on 8/9, half a point behind Irina Berezina-Feldman. There was a record turnout of 60 in the open event, and 17 in the women's event. We are looking for part-time chess coaches to teach in schools in some regions. University students and chess players with a rating of at least 1200 as a guide would be ideal candidates. Gardiner Chess offers training and support through resources and an ongoing professional development programme. Please contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested ggardiner@gardinerchess.com.

Interestingly, Phachara Wongwichit (twice Queensland Junior Champion, and a junior no longer) and Moulthun Ly (Australian Junior Champion) have not won the event.
