Australian Championships and Australian Junior Championships, Carlton Crest Hotel, Brisbane 28 December to 9 January

Well the early bird deadline has passed and we are only three weeks away from arguably the biggest chess event ever held in Brisbane. The organising committee comprising Ian Murray, John Humphrey, Lionel Smerdon and Graeme Gardiner are thrilled at a) the playing strength of entrants in all categories and b) the very strong support from the Queensland chess community. It is clear that you have got right behind us, and we are very heartened by this. A full list of entrants can be seen at: www.ozchess2006.com/players.htm

So don't miss out. If you have not already entered, get in now. You can register and pay online at https://shost1.ausat.net/ssl.caq.org.au/entry_form.html which is arrived at via www.ozchess2006.com (entry form/tournament details).

Don't miss the closing ceremony at 7.30pm on 9 January.

One of the conditions of entry to national title events is that all players must be members of their state associations, so if you have entered, you will need to join CAQ for the 2006 calendar year (cost $10).

There are three ways of doing so - see www.caq.org.au/htm/membership.htm for details

Ian Murray and Graeme Gardiner are organising strong coaches to coach juniors throughout the Australian Juniors. Coaching will involve pre-game preparation and after-game analysis for each round. Cost will be $150 for the duration of the event. Coaching of juniors has considerably lifted the standard in recent years. If interested, please contact Ian on 3349 5648 or Graeme on 5522 7221.

Worried about transport? For most people a good financial option is to take it turns to car-pool or go by train (weekly passes). Roma Street Railway Station is only 5 minutes walk from the playing venue.

Parent and Child Tournament Sunday 18 December

The Parent and Child Tournament will be held on Sunday 18 December from 10am to 4pm at the chess centre. The tournament cost is $30 per couple. Prize groupings are mother/son, mother/daughter, father/son, father/daughter and grandparent/grandchild. This will be the first time that we have included grandparents in this competition. Kids play against kids and adults against adults - and don't worry about your playing standard - just come along and enjoy yourselves.

Christmas Break-Up Party Sunday 18 December

Everyone who has attended the chess centre during 2005 is most welcome to participate in our Christmas break-up party at the centre from 4.30-7.30pm on Sunday 18 December.

The break-up party is free, and is open to all our Gardiner Chess friends. Please bring yourselves, a plate of food, something to drink and plenty of goodwill to share around. We will supplement what you bring with extra food and refreshments. We will also be running a few games including a chess quiz and a tower building competition (using chess pieces).

After-School Chess Term One, 2005

After-school chess at the chess centre will recommence on Monday 23 January 2006.

Queenstown Classic, NZ

Arrangements have now been finalised for our trip to the big event in New Zealand, departing Brisbane on 12 January and returning 25 January. We have a party of 17.

Gold Coast Tin Cup

This popular event is now being operated by Peter Bender and Outreach Chess. Entry forms will be mailed in the next few weeks. The tournament is being held at the Sports Pavilion, Somerset College on the weekend of 18/19 February.

Brisbane Young Champions Series

Gardiner Chess is considering holding a new series in Brisbane for serious junior players who are rated 800+. The idea is to copy the successful junior masters series which has been operating on the Gold Coast for nearly 3 years. The model is an 8 round event, held once a term, on one evening per week. The aim is to produce players capable of winning Australian age titles, and involves championship length games, followed by post match analysis by experienced chess coaches.

If you are interested in participating, please reply to this email, and advise under what circumstances you would be prepared to take part - ie travelling distance, day of the week etc.

Australian Schools Teams Finals, Sydney 10/11 December

The Queensland representatives for the Australian Schools Teams Finals for 2005 are:
Open High Somerset College
Open Primary Somerset College
All Girls High Brisbane State High School
All Girls Primary Somerville House
We wish the four teams all the very best for this important event next weekend. Full details at www.nswjcl.org.au/AustralianSchools/2005/ASTC_Index.htm

Gold Coast Super Junior Masters

Yitao Lei, despite a last round loss to Daniel Ford, has deservedly won the inaugural Super Junior Masters event with a score of 7.5/9 in the 10 player, round robin event. Well done Yitao! Second was Gene Nakauchi on 7 with Alex Stahnke third on 5.5 on countback from Steven Cooke. This was a hotly contested tournament. Congratulations to all of the players for their excellent attitude.

Gold Coast Junior Masters

Cameron Thompson has added another name to the strong list of players who have won this event. The list includes current Australian Junior Champion Moulthun Ly. Cameron scored an excellent 7.5/9. Second was Liam McGarity on 7 on countback from his sister Molly also on 7. Zane Adams lost his last round game against Liam to finish fourth on 6.5.

Humble Pawn Teams Tournament

After 6 rounds of the 2005 Humble Pawn Teams Event, the Robina Rooks lead on countback from the Mudgeeraba Marauders, with the Carrara Cannons breathing down their necks.

Robina Rooks 4.5 team wins 20.0 individual points

Mudgeeraba Marauders 4.5 team wins 17.5 individual points

Carara Cannons 3.5 team wins 20.5 individual points

This is a 10 teams round robin. Watch out for some surprise guest appearances this coming Wednesday!
