Moulthun Ly
v IM Stephen Solomon 9/10 April and 16/17 April
We
are all looking forward to the 8-game match between 13 year old
Moulthun Ly (the youngest ever Australian
Junior Champion) and International Master Stephen
Solomon who has represented Australia with distinction
in many Olympiads.
Entrants in both the Queensland Women's Championship and the Gold Coast Junior Championship will have a special treat, as they will be able to watch two of Australia's finest players compete in an eight game match over the two weekends. There will be two games a day, with the first game starting at 10am and the second game starting one hour after the first finishes to allow time for analysis and refreshments. All eight games will be relayed live to the internet via www.gardinerchess.com (live chess).
Grandmaster Roland Schmaltz and other coaches available for private coaching
GM Roland Schmaltz from Germany, and his partner Nina Kissel who is a 1500 club player, have moved to Brisbane, and are likely to stay until at least the end of 2006.
Roland won the Brisbane Open without being troubled. His claim to fame is that he is the unofficial world bullet champion on ICC. He has also coached many of Germany's leading junior players. Check out his webpage at www.hawkeye.de.
He is available through Gardiner Chess to do a few private lessons a week. He will be at the Gardiner Chess Centre each Wednesday between 4 and 8pm, and at other times will be available for coaching Brisbane players at his home in Kelvin Grove. Roland prefers to coach strong players - as a guide rated 1500+. The cost could be shared between a small group of 2-3 players. Bookings should be made through Gardiner Chess.
IM Stephen Solomon is also available to do some private lessons for strong players in Brisbane.
At the chess centre, private coaches WIM Arianne Caoili, Matthew Sonter and Craig Duxbury are all gaining an excellent reputation for bringing promising juniors along very quickly. Junior coach Alexandra Jule is also providing an excellent service for developing juniors. Jacob Edwards, one of the strongest players in Brisbane, will be available for private coaching at the centre during term two.
All the coaches mentioned above can be booked for private lessons through the chess centre .
Term Two Junior Masters
This term the event will be held at the chess centre on 8 Mondays, commencing on 18 April. This is very strongly recommended for developing juniors rated around 800+ who would like to be competitive in championship chess. This year, of course, the Australian Junior Championships are being held in Brisbane at the Carlton Crest from 28 December to 9 January. We hope that most of our best junior players will make arrangements with their families to be available for this event.
There is now little doubt that the junior masters is having a significant and very positive influence on the playing standard of Gold Coast juniors in comparison to the rest of Australia. Post game analysis by strong player/coaches is having an ongoing and cumulative effect.
We now have a game viewer on our webpage, thanks to Nik Stawski and Wendy Gardiner. This makes it much easier to mouse through games. All games in the term one series are now up on our webpage www.gardinerchess.com (view games), and you can also have a bit of a chuckle at Bomble's Bulletins on our webpage (junior masters).
Each week in term two the board one game will be relayed live to the internet at around 5.20pm on Mondays.
2005/2006 Australian Championships and
Australian Junior Championships
The ACF have officially
approved the bid of the organising committee (comprising
Graeme Gardiner, Ian Murray and
John Humphrey) to host both the Australian
Championships and Australian Junior
Championships at the Carlton Crest Hotel in central
Brisbane (www.carltonhotels.com.au/brisbane/). The
dates are from 28 December 2005 to 9 January 2006 inclusive.
The event will be organised
on a voluntary basis by the three organisers, who hope to
use the event to involve more local volunteers. The
organisers aim to dispense much of the information, and
promote the event, via the official internet site which will
be launched soon. Hard copy entry forms will be widely
distributed, but otherwise the website will be the main
point of contact with the chess community. As soon as this
site is up, we will notify everyone via this email
bulletin, the ACF website and Paul Broekhuyse's ACF email
bulletin.
The Australian Championship
has a wonderful tradition going back well over 100 years,
and is well-documented in Cathy Chua's
book, Australian Chess at the Top. We will do our
best to uphold, and if possible build upon the tradition.
Part of our submission to the ACF included the names of
those who have already agreed to play in the Australian
Championships. These are the reigning champion, IM
Gary Lane, and GMs Ian Rogers, Darryl
Johansen, Murray Chandler and Lubomir
Ftacnik. The inclusion of the overseas players,
which is in accordance with the ACF constitution, has been
done to enable GM norms to be possible, and to give our top
players high level competition in an Olympiad selection
year.
GM Roland Schmaltz
having recently moved to Brisbane (for approximately two
years) is likely to qualify for the championships as a 5th
GM once he has played the requisite 20 ACF-rated games. He
has already played six.
Games in the
Australian Junior Championships will commence at
9am daily (8am for the final round). Games in the
Australian Championship (and Major and
Seniors) will commence at 3pm daily (1pm for the final
round). The Australian Minor will be held
over the last six playing days of the event. Rest days will
be on 1 January and 6 January (when the national conference
will be held). The closing ceremony will be held at 7.30pm
on the final day. There will be $2,000+ in random draw
prizes, the presentation of ACF awards, surprises and other
attractions at the closing ceremony. We thought this would
be a very good opportunity to get a large number of people
involved in both adult and junior chess together at the one
time and place, so we will be doing everything we can to
make the closing ceremony very appealing to all. So we are
asking everyone to seriously consider postponing departure
until the 10th.
The organisers have chosen
to hold both events at the same time and place partly for
cost effectiveness, but mainly for selfish reasons - the
organisers wish to go to NZ for the other big
event (Queenstown from 15 to 24 January). We suspect from
feedback received that we are by no means alone in this
desire.

If you don't want to do the adventure things, then three excursions (though not included in our package) that may appeal to you are a day trip to the stunning Milford Sound (including cruise), a trip across the lake to the sheep station in the famous steamer TSS Earnshaw, and a trip up the mountain in a gondola for indescribable views and a fantastic seafood smorgasbord. The tournament will be located at the very well-appointed Millennium Hotel http://www.millenniumqueenstown.co.nz/. NZ$30,000 in prizes. Lots of hefty ratings prizes. 10 rounds starting at 3pm daily. 100 mins a side plus 60 secs a move (Fischer).

This tournament is always very well-attended, and over the last few years has been won by virtually all the big names in Queensland junior chess, including Charles Pizzato, Max Leskiewicz, Nathan Pearce, David Smerdon, Evan Jones, Matthew Sonter, Toshi Kimura, Steven Cooke and Arianne Caoili. Interestingly, Phachara Wongwichit (twice Queensland Junior Champion, and a junior no longer) and Moulthun Ly (Australian Junior Champion) have not won the event.
