This email is being sent to approximately 1,200+ adult and junior chess players, mainly in South East Queensland, although we have a growing number in regional Queensland, and a few inter-state. We aim to build this bulletin in order that it provides the entire Queensland chess community with news, information and comment on all chess matters. If at any stage you decide that you no longer wish to receive this bulletin, please simply send us an email, and we will remove you from the list.
If you would like to help us expand our network, please supply us with the email addresses of those in your region who would like to receive this bulletin, and/or perhaps supply us with information on chess in your region which you would like to see included.

Australian Championships and Australian Junior Championships in Brisbane, 28 December 2005 to 9 January 2006

Well, we hope that many of you are preparing for some kind of participation in either the Australian Championships or the Australian Junior Championships. If you are a junior iron man like current Australian Junior Champion Moulthun Ly, no doubt you will enter the Australian Championship, Australian Junior Championship, Australian Lightning Championship and the Australian Junior Rapid Championship! It will be worth coming along just to see how Moulthun goes (if they don't have to carry him out suffering from exhaustion)! Maybe Queensland IMs Stephen Solomon and David Smerdon can give the Southerners and overseas players a bit of a shake.

It's not just a case of playing yourself, it's for you to enjoy the whole event. The whole culture. Get into it! Let's show what Queensland chess is made of.

Please pay a visit to the official website
www.ozchess2006.com and view the list of participants; this is already building nicely. If you are not quite sure if you are strong enough to enter (there should be something for everyone), or you don't know which event to enter, please contact Ian Murray 3349 2745 or Graeme Gardiner 5522 7221 and we will be pleased to answer your questions. If you are a former leading player in Queensland chess, and would like to play but really don't have the time, please at least make an effort to come along and perhaps play in one of the shorter events.

Queenstown Open, 15 to 24 January 2005

We leave Brisbane Airport for New Zealand at 8.15am on Thursday 12 January and return to Brisbane at 4.30pm on Wed 25 January. In between, we will be experiencing what promises to be New Zealand's largest and best ever chess tournament in one of the most beautiful settings. Our party consists of 18 adults and juniors travelling from Brisbane and one adult from Melbourne. We can still take two more with us from Brisbane Airport. Full details at our webpage
www.gardinerchess.com.

Queensland Inter-School Finals, Sat/Sun 8/9 October

Schools will be coming from throughout Queensland to Brisbane Grammar School next weekend for the inter-school finals. The open primary and secondary will be playing all weekend, and the all girls' primary and secondary will be on Sunday only.

Whilst the teams in the open sections have qualified through the various regional competitions, the 'all girls' is a one day event which any school can enter. It is not too late to submit an entry. Teams of four primary or secondary can still enter. Go to
www.caq.org.au/htm/events.htm

Junior Masters and Super Junior Masters

The term 4 junior masters competition starts tomorrow (Monday 3 October) at the chess centre. Nearly 40 juniors have been playing most of the year and receiving top level, post game coaching analysis. The result has been a fairly dramatic improvement in playing standard amongst most players. Also, they are all very much better prepared for the upcoming Australian Junior Championships.

This term the top 8 players from term 3 get to join a couple of invited players for an event we have named the super junior masters. The players are:

Yitao Lei 1588, Steven Cooke 1574, Sam Grigg 1479, Daniel Ford 1375, Gene Nakauchi 1312, Brendan Baker 1270, Lachlan Pedersen-Lee 1216, Daniel Barrett 1181, Alex Stahnke 1122 and Aki Matsui 974. Some very good players have missed out for the 'super' event, including Molly and Liam McGarity (away at world juniors), Jessica Kinder, Cameron Thompson, Zane Adams, Jonas Muller and Caleb Eriksson.

Grandmaster Roland Schmaltz has been added to our coaching analysis staff for the term 4 events.

Gold Coast Individual Age Championships, Robina 18/19 October
Brisbane Individual Age Championships Marymac Centre, Annerley 26 October

These events are where kids get a chance to play only other kids born in the same year. They are school-based tournaments. So if you want to play, please remind your school to enter you.

Humble Pawn Regional Teams Event, 5 Wednesdays commencing 16 November

This will be the third year for this very popular teams event held at the chess centre which leads up to Christmas. Last year the final standings were:

Coomera Crushers 7
Burleigh Bishops 6
Tallai Titans 6
Robina Rooks 5
Broadbeach Brains 3
Carrara Cannons 3
Tweed Tornadoes 3
Southport Sharks 1
Mudgeeraba Marauders 1

The previous year the Burleigh Bishops snuck through in the last round to finish over the top of the Carrara Cannons.

Teams of six players. 10 teams, 9 rounds, round robin. Games start at 7.30pm prompt each Wednesday. 2 games a night, except the last night when there is one, followed by Christmas break-up drinks and nibbles.

Any volunteers for team captains this year? Please contact Graeme on 5522 7221. Getting a full team to the chess boards each week is half the battle!

The humble pawn was turned from a block of timber that was hewn from a rogue tree that was felled when it started dropping branches on the chess centre in 2003.

CAQ AGM, Lightning and Clubs Teams Event, Sat/Sun 3/4 December

The CAQ AGM will be held on Saturday 3 December, followed by the annual CAQ Lightning tournament. The following day the popular and successful Queensland inter-club teams event will be held.

Parent and Child Tournament and Christmas Break-Up Party, Sunday 11 December at the Chess Centre

In this event kids enter as a team of two with their mother or father (or grandparent). They play alongside each other, with child playing child, and adult playing adult. It is not to be taken too seriously, and is a lot of fun. It is followed by a free BYO food and drink Christmas break-up party.

Looking for a Career as a Data Analyst?

We are a recruitment firm who are currently recruiting for a number of Data Analyst positions for a large US Investment company who are setting up a research arm in Brisbane.  The type of candidates we look for are either fresh graduates or fairly junior individuals who have degrees in statistics, accounting, economics, mathematics etc.  Our client has found that Chess clubs in the US are an excellent source of potential candidates as these people have the right sort of minds for the role.  I have attached a role description of the position and we are currently looking for 14 positions.  I thought I would contact you to see if this might be of interest to any of your members and if there was any possibility of letting your members know of this opportunity.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have and to let me know if this will be possible, the roles pay around 50-80K.

2006 Calendar of Events

The Chess Association of Queensland (CAQ) are currently putting together the 2006 Calendar of Events. It is important that we work together to try and avoid date clashes. If anyone has got an event for 2006 in mind, it might be an idea to let the CAQ Coordinator, Garvin Gray know at garvingray@optusnet.com.au. I have seen a draft of the calendar, and it is already filling up very fast. The more events the better of course.
