Vale David Lavercombe

I'm very sad to advise that David Lavercombe, who was coaching for Gardiner Chess in several Brisbane schools this year, has been killed in a tragic accident. David was fatally injured in a quad bike accident on the family property at Maleny yesterday.

I have only known David since Nik Stawski introduced me to him at Easter this year, and in that time he has proved to be a wonderful chess coach who has been loved by all the students he has taught, and a friend to many of those involved at Gardiner Chess. It was only three days ago that he gave a presentation at our coaches' seminar. David was recently elected President of Club Bullwinkle, and had just been recruited by Ian Murray as Assistant Secretary of the Chess Association of Queensland.

David will be very much missed by all those who knew him in the chess community.

The funeral is likely to be held at Marist College, Ashgrove. A Coroner's Report will have to be prepared, and the funeral will not be until at least Wednesday.

Australian Schools Teams Championship Finals held in Sydney last weekend

Somerset College has won the Australian Primary Schools Teams Championship by a single point from Essex Heights (Vic) and Sydney Grammar. In the other events, Somerset College came fourth in the High Schools Open competition, Brisbane State High School came second in the 'all girls' high schools comp, and Somerville House came third in the 'all girls' primary comp. Full scores and details can be found at www.nswjcl.org.au/AustralianSchools/2005/ASTC_Index.htm

Parent and Child Tournament tomorrow Sunday 18 December

We look forward to welcoming the parent/child teams to our centre tomorrow (Sunday). Remember, grandparent/grandchild combinations are also welcome. The event is being held at the chess centre from 10am to 4pm, followed from 4.30-7.30pm by the club break-up party. The party is free, byo food and drinks, but you can expect a few extra nibbles and drinks from us.

Australian Championships and Australian Junior Championships 28 December to 9 January

Apart from the seniors (over 60s), all 11 events at the upcoming Australian Championships have been very well supported. We need a few more over 60s. Of course, we can always do with more entrants in each and every event.

A reminder to juniors that we have several Brisbane and Gold Coast coaches who are available to coach for the duration of the event. The cost is $150 per child and bookings can be made through Graeme Gardiner ggardiner@gardinerchess.com phone 5522 7221 or Ian Murray chessqld@optusnet.com.au phone 3411 3445. Bookings need to be confirmed and paid by next Friday 23 December.

We are still looking for a couple of paid games enterers for the event. You would need to commit to a four hour shift on the 11 playing days from either 10am to 2pm or 4pm to 8pm. The pay is a modest $300 for the duration.

Full details of the event at www.ozchess2006.com. You will be able to watch live games on the top boards in every round in the championship and junior events. Results will be available promptly throughout the event.

Gardiner Chess is sponsoring the Gold Coast Open which is being run by Peter Bender of Outreach Chess. This will be one of only three top category five events in the Grand Prix, the others being the famous Doeberl Cup and the NSW Open.

Brisbane Young Champions Series 2006

At this stage we have had a modest response to our requests for expressions of interest for this event. We have decided to delay introduction of this programme until at least term two.
