Gold Coast
Open next weekend Sat/Sun 18/19 June
The
flagship event of the Gold Coast Chess Club, the Gold Coast
Open, will be held once again at the Robina Town Centre
Community Centre. For those who haven't played there before, the
venue is quiet, carpeted, comfortable, spacious and
air-conditioned. As usual, we expect a very good turnout, and
some strong players, including Australia's number one player,
Grandmaster Ian Rogers.
There are $3,000 in prizes, and open and under 1600 sections.
This ensures that there are a lot less mis-matches, and plenty
of good competitive chess. IA Charles Zworestine is the Director
of Play. This event has been rated by Australian Chess Magazine
as the number three weekend tournament in Australia, with only
the Doeberl Cup and Ballarat Begonia rated higher.
Once again the Gold Coast Open has been registered as an
Australian Grand Prix category 3 event, meaning that you can
gain important points in the national grand prix.

an entry form, please go to

Australian
Championships and Australian Junior Championships, 28 Dec 2005
to 9 Jan 2006
The
Australian Championship, with a history dating back to 1885, is
the most important event on the Australian chess calendar. This
year it is being combined with the Australian Junior
Championships, with the juniors starting at 9am daily, and the
adults at 3pm. The organising committee is Ian Murray, John
Humphrey and Graeme Gardiner. The venue for the event is the
five star Carlton Crest in Brisbane. It will be the first time
that the Australian Championships have been held in Brisbane
since 1967. The Australian Juniors were last held in Brisbane in
1989.
This is a rare opportunity to bring together the entire adult
and junior chess communities of Australia and we aim to make it
one of the best chess events held in this country. We appeal
strongly to the Brisbane and Queensland chess communities to get
right behind the event. Please particularly be aware that
neither the Australian Championships nor the Australian Junior
Championships is restricted to élite players, and both events
cater for players of all standards. Part of the fun is to be in
the company of the top players, and simply to enjoy the
atmosphere of top class chess. But we emphasise that adults and
juniors of all standards can participate.
So
please plan your Christmas holidays around participating in the
Australian Championships. For those who cannot commit themselves
to 13 days of chess, the Australian Minor runs from 3 to 9
January.
Junior age groups are under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
Full details are available at
www.ozchess2006.com This webpage includes an online
entry form and the ability to enter and pay securely online. Ian
Murray has done most of the work involved in putting up such a
comprehensive webpage, with considerable input from Wendy
Gardiner and Jonathan Paxman.
We'll see you there!!
Queensland
Junior Championships, Tues to Fri 21-24 June
Queensland's most important event for juniors is only just over
a week away! This event is an important stepping stone to
participation in the Australian Junior Championships. With the
championship length games, it is ideal preparation for the
challenges from inter-state that lie ahead later in the year.
Ian
Murray is running the tournament at the Marymac Centre, 616
Ipswich Road, Annerley.
The
under 8 competition is just one day, on Tuesday 21 June.
The
under 10s and under 12s have a two day event, Thurs 23 and Fri
24 June.
The
under 14s, 16s and 18s have a four day event Tues to Fri 21 to
24 June.
Australia's number one player/coach, Grandmaster Ian Rogers will
be providing post-game analysis on all four days. This will be
available to all players. Post-game analysis is certainly one of
the best ways of learning and improving. GM Rogers is sponsored
by the Gold Coast Chess Club, Chess Association of Qld and
Gardiner Chess for this service.
Graeme will be taking a group of Gold Coast students up to the
event daily in the chess bus. However, it is almost booked out
already. If there are any Gold Coast parents who can assist with
transport, please let me know.
Gardiner
Chess Daytime Camps, 27, 28 and 29 June and 1 July
Gardiner Chess will be holding the usual daytime school
holiday camps at the Gardiner Chess Centre, Mudgeeraba and the
Marymac Centre, Annerley on four days 27, 28 and 29 June and 1
July. These camps run from 9am to 5pm daily, and involve a
mixture of chess coaching, chess activities, tournament chess
and non-chess recreational activities. Plenty of learning goes
on, but the kids have fun. The early bird cost, available up to
Friday 24 June, is $40 per day or $135 for the four days. Third
and subsequent members of the same family attend free of charge.
Runaway Bay
Shopping Village Junior Tournament Thurs 30 June
This popular one day junior tournament is suitable for juniors
of all playing standards. Remi Broadway will be running the
tournament on the day. There will be $500 in cash prizes. The
entry fee is $10. An entry form can be found at
www.gardinerchess.com ('what's coming up soon').
Entry and secure payment can be made online at the same site
(pay online).
On
the same day, all Gardiner Chess coaches will be having a
coaching seminar at the chess centre. Sadly, we will be
farewelling Nik Stawski, who is going to Japan for 12 months to
teach English. Nik has done wonderful work in developing chess
coaching in South East Queensland, and we will miss him sorely.
Queenstown, NZ Adventure 13 to 25 January 2006 - Get in quick!
Arrangements for the big trip are firming up. We now have a group of 14 who have paid non-refundable deposits. We have also persuaded Air NZ to hold an extra 6 seats for others who may wish to join our group, and extra rooms on hold at the Queenstown Lodge http://www.qlodge.co.nz/index2.htm. So if you are interested in joining in on what may be the chess holiday of a lifetime, please contact Graeme Gardiner on 5522 7221 or ggardiner@gardinerchess.com.
The main details are:
Queenstown is simply a magnificent destination, surrounded by mountains and situated next to a lovely lake. There’s lots to do and see on spare days. Billed as the adventure capital of the world. Many scenes from Lord of the Rings were filmed in this region. There are no traffic lights in Queenstown, just roundabouts. If you don't want to do the adventure things, then three excursions (though not included in our package) that may appeal to you are a day trip to the stunning Milford Sound (including cruise), a trip across the lake to the sheep station in the famous steamer TSS Earnshaw, and a trip up the mountain in a gondola for indescribable views and a fantastic seafood smorgasbord. For more information on Queenstown go to http://www.everythingqueenstown.com/.
The tournament will be located at the very well-appointed Millennium Hotel http://www.millenniumqueenstown.co.nz/. NZ$35,000 in prizes. Lots of hefty ratings prizes. 10 rounds starting at 3pm daily. 100 mins a side plus 60 secs a move (Fischer).
Our package, with three choices of accommodation at the Queenstown Lodge, includes return air fares Brisbane/Queenstown with Air NZ, Queenstown airport transfers, 12 nights accommodation at the Queenstown Lodge, cooked breakfasts daily, tournament entry fee and travel insurance. It does not include meals (other than breakfast) and excursions. Depending upon whether you choose bunk accommodation with en suite, hotel rooms or luxury self contained apartments, the cost per person varies between $1,300 and $1,970.
To register, simply reply to this email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com. We will need a non-refundable $100 per person holding deposit, with the full balance payable by 31 October 2005.
Chess Coaches Required
Gardiner Chess is constantly trying to fill demand for chess coaches in schools in South East Queensland. Many of our coaches like to teach at just a couple of schools per week. Others do more. We provide thorough training and orientation. In some areas we are short of coaches. If you are interested in joining our ranks, please contact Graeme Gardiner on 5522 7221 or ggardiner@gardinerchess.com.
World Youth Championship 2005
Locals Moulthun Ly (Brisbane), Luthien Russell (Toowoomba) and Molly McGarity (Gold Coast) will be representing Australia at the World Youth Championship in Belfort, France from 18 to 29 July. It is a way off yet, but it might be worth bookmarking the official website now http://www.belfort-echecs.com/ We wish all three the very best of luck at this very important event.
Northside Junior Chess Club at
Nundah Primary
All
Brisbane junior chess players are welcome at the Northside
Junior Chess Club, which is held at Nundah Primary on Wednesdays
from 4 to 6pm in term time. Jacob Edwards and Kieron
Olm-Milligan are the two coaches, and juniors receive a mix of
chess coaching, chess activities and rated tournament chess.
After-School Chess at
the Gardiner Chess Centre
All
Gold Coast juniors will be most welcome at the centre on any
afternoon of the week from 4 to 6pm. The first visit is free.
There are various coaches on different afternoons of the week,
and juniors receive a mix of chess coaching, chess activities
and rated tournament chess.
Ruth Coxhill Memorial
FIDE Rated Tournament
This will be held at the chess centre on 9 Wednesday evenings
commencing 20 July. It will be a 10 player round robin
tournament. Several players have signalled their intention to
enter. However, we have two or three places available. Please
contact Graeme Gardiner at the centre if you wish to take part.
Gold Coast Junior
Masters
Over the last 7 weeks, 38 Gold Coast juniors have been taking
part in the term two junior masters event. This is a swiss draw
tournament, with the rate of play set at 90 minutes a side plus
30 seconds a move. The way that the local junior community have
embraced this serious tournament chess has been a real highlight
of the chess centre as far as Graeme and Wendy Gardiner are
concerned. With post-game analysis provided by strong coaches
such as Matthew Sonter, Craig Duxbury and Nik Stawski, there is
real substance to the learning and intensity of the event.
Games start at 5.15pm, and while most games finish by 7.30-8pm,
the longest game finished at 9.45pm!
With one round to go, Yitao Lei looks almost certain to take out
his third straight junior masters event, as he leads by one
point from Daniel Barrett, whom he plays in the final round on
Monday evening, and who is the only player who can catch him.
The
term three, the junior masters series commences on Monday 18
July. This will have the same format as usual, but with one
important added incentive - the top eight players in the term
three event will be joined by two stronger players in a 10
player 'super' junior masters in term four. This will be a round
robin event and will be in addition to the usual junior masters
tournament. It is hoped that in future we will be able to run a
super junior masters alongside the regular junior masters, with
promotion (and relegation) as an added incentive to the super
group. It will be tougher for the top players, but will provide
them with even better preparation for the national
championships.
Queensland Junior
Ratings List
Dr
David McKinnon advises me that the new list should be available
around 29/30 June. As soon as David makes it available, Wendy
will put it up on our webpage
www.gardinerchess.com (Ratings). Thanks as always to
David for this wonderful, and remarkably accurate list of around
2500 Queensland junior players. With the advent of more and more
coaching in schools, the volume of work for David, who is a very
busy doctor in Accident and Emergency, just gets more and more
for each two-monthly list.
Caloundra Open
This event is being held on the weekend of Sat/Sun 25/26 June at
the CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street, Caloundra. As usual, Gardiner
Chess will be taking a group of chess players on the chess bus.
Please book at the chess centre to book your place. A weekend
transport/accommodation/supervision package for juniors (excl
entry fee) is $90. Juniors are encouraged to attend with their
families.
Queensland
