UNSUBSCRIBE

If you do not wish to receive Gardiner Chess email bulletins, simply reply to ggardiner@gardinerchess.com and we will immediately take you off our list.

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS

We are very well stocked up on sets, books, clocks, CDs, videos and chess computers. We have products suitable for all ages and abilities. Even if we don’t have what you want, we can get it in very quickly, so please consider the chess shop for some of your Christmas gifts. Look out for our chocolate chess sets a week or two before Christmas (or place an order if you wish).

THREE IMPORTED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS AND DEVELOPING PLAYERS

Gardiner Chess has obtained the sole Australian rights to three best-selling books which have been written for beginners and developing chess students. Two of these three are tactics workbooks which are ideal for students to work through at home. One of these provides the answers at the back of the book, and the other has a separate answers booklet. The third book, which has the slightly misleading title ‘Begin Chess’, has more strategic ideas for developing juniors who already have a fairly good understanding of tactics. All three books are very reasonably priced and are available at the chess shop and via our webpage at www.gardinerchess.com. As an added incentive, if those students who attend after school chess have any problems understanding ideas in the books, Gardiner Chess coaching staff will be happy to assist with queries during after school chess.

CHRISTMAS PARENT/CHILD TOURNAMENT

We very much hope that the juniors are busy training their parents for the inaugural parent/child tournament due to be held from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 14 December. This is a fun event, with prizes. The important thing is not to take the event too seriously, but to come along and enjoy your participation (and perhaps your child’s derisive comments about your moves!).

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

For those juniors starting to get bored towards the end of the December/January school holidays (which I’m sure is most of them), we have two weeks of chess. From Monday 12 to Friday 16 Jan we have the Summer Rapids – separate morning and afternoon ‘rapid play’ tournaments on each day of the week. From Monday 19 Jan to Friday 23 Jan we have our usual chess camp, with a mixture of coaching, tournament chess and basketball/table tennis to relax. We have leaflets at the centre and as usual all details are available from our webpage www.gardinerchess.com.

MUSICAL CHESS FOR TODDLERS AGED 3-5 YEARS

We are fortunate that Christine Broadway, who does a great job teaching the beginners at after school chess, is available to start Musical Chess for Toddlers. Music and chess are both fun, improve a child’s reasoning skills, memory and problem-solving abilities, stimulate both sides of the brain, contribute to cognitive development and sound recognition and assist social development. Christine has a vast show business experience with a lifetime of involvement in music and dance.

The classes will be very small and will run for one hour, with several short breaks. The cost will be $15 per session.

Please register your interest by emailing Wendy Gardiner by email wgardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone Wendy at the centre on 5522 7221.

ART IN CHESS SUNDAY 7 DECEMBER

An exhibition of current works by a Currumbin-based art group, organised by Rose Bedford, is to be held in the Gardiner Chess Centre from 8 to 13 December.

Eleven artists will present their unique interpretation of the subject ‘chess’, through the use of oils, acrylics, ceramics, drawings and sculpture.

The exhibition will be launched on Sunday 7 December at 2pm by Michael Brohier, Dean of Studies at Somerset College . This will be an opportunity for invited guests to meet these talented local artists and view their work. The opening will also feature fascinating chess-themed entertainment offered by poets and creative writers, against a background of beautiful Indian instrumental music.

If you would like an invitation to the launch, please contact Wendy Gardiner by email wgardiner@gardinerchess.com or phone 5522 7221.

CHRISTMAS BREAK

After-school chess finishes for this year on Friday 12 December. Sign-on for 2004 will be from Tuesday 27 January to Friday 30 January. On each of these afternoons there will be a free lightning event from 4pm to 6pm. After-school chess officially recommences on Monday 2 February.

Adult chess finishes on Wednesday 17 December with the final round of the Humble Pawn Regional Teams Championship. The adult club recommences on Monday 12 January.

HUMBLE PAWN REGIONAL TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

Ten teams of six are competing in this inaugural event. The chess centre is really humming on Wednesday evenings, with many of the coast’s strongest players participating. The ten teams are the Coomera Crushers, Southport Sharks, Nerang Knights, Carrara Cannons, Broadbeach Brains, Mudgeeraba Marauders, Tallai Titans, Robina Rooks, Burleigh Bishops and Tweed Tornadoes. Latest scores can be found at our webpage www.gardinerchess.com (tournament reports).

LOST PROPERTY

Our ‘stock’ of lost property is threatening to engulf our store-room, so please help us by claiming any of your, or your child’s, missing gear. We have a wonderful selection of hats, tops, coats, shoes, water bottles and miscellaneous odds and ends for you to peruse. Any unclaimed items will have to be given to Lifeline by the end of the year, if only to free up some store-room space. Ask Wendy to show you the collection.

BRIDGE

Bridge finishes for the year on Monday 15 December and recommences on Australia Day, Monday 26 January.

THREE BEST SELLING CHESS BOOKS FOR BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS

Gardiner Chess has obtained the sole Australian rights to three best selling chess books which are ideal for beginner to intermediate chess players. JUNIOR RATINGS

The new Queensland Junior Ratings list is now out and can be viewed on our webpage. Many thanks to David McKinnon for the great job he has done over several years of managing this list. It is gratifying to see that many of the kids who have been attending ‘after-school’ chess have now obtained a rating, and several have already seen their rating improve significantly. We particularly recommend the Junior Masters Event for players rated 800+, which is held each term on Tuesday evenings from 5.15pm . We have seen this group dramatically improve their playing strength and chess maturity whilst playing the traditional classic chess.

CHILL-OUT CHESS

Friday night chill-out chess for 15-24 year olds (or thereabouts) continues to be well-attended by boys and girls. Last week we held a surprise 21st birthday party for our popular coach, Matt Sonter . It was a very stormy evening, but everyone turned up and we all had a great time. Come along and enjoy the very relaxed atmosphere.

PRIVATE COACHING

More and more individuals are taking up private lessons with our coaches, who include Matt Sonter , Kerry Corker, WIM Anastasia Sorokina (who, incidentally, we are delighted to advise has just been granted permanent residency in Australia) and WIM Petra Blazkova . Anastasia, Petra and WIM Arianne Caoili make up a unique trio of young attractive female International Masters currently playing in the region.

BRIDGE

Our bridge director, John Dennis, has not been well in recent weeks, but is showing signs of recovery. We all wish you well John. In the meantime, Shirley Mazzer has been doing a great job running the club. Average numbers are around 16-20 on Mondays (novices) and around 12 on Thursdays (open). Please come along and give it a go. Play starts at 9.30am prompt. We are also collecting numbers for the next ‘Learn to Play’ group. Incidentally, the Mudgeeraba Bridge Club has booked its first congress for 2004 – The Mudgeeraba Novice Teams Bridge Congress will be held on Sunday 2 May 2004 at the centre.

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS

With Christmas just around the corner, why not consider a chess present for your son, daughter, brother, sister, father, mother, friend, relative etc, as the case may be. Gardiner Chess will make sure it is ‘stocked up’ in the weeks leading up to Christmas. We can usually order goods not currently stocked on our shelves for delivery within two to three days. We stock chess sets, boards, clocks, CDs, DVDs, Videos and Books.

CHILL OUT CHESS

One of our favourite sessions each week is ‘chill out chess’ on Friday evenings from 7pm to 10pm. Teenagers hang out together, playing transfer or blitz, listening to their music, eating and sometimes playing cards, watching the Friday night footy or simply relaxing after their week at school. Teenagers of all standards are likely to feel quite comfortable in this environment.

Two new events commencing tomorrow evening Monday 21 July at the centre

The Hardys FIDE Rated Classic starts tomorrow evening at 6.30 pm at the chess centre. Entrants are IM Stephen Solomon, Matthew Sonter, Justin Pengelley, Toshi Kimura, Bernie Saavedra, Nathan Davidson, Nikolai Hart, Chris Page, Moulthun Ly and Steven Cooke. The event runs for nine Mondays with one game relayed live to our webpage each Monday. Time controls are 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move (Fischer).

Alongside this event for four weeks will be another tournament with two rounds per night and time controls of 30 mins a side plus 15 secs a move (Fischer). This event commences at 7pm each Monday.

Junior Masters Tournament starts this Tuesday 22 July at the centre

This is the second junior masters event in this new series. This is part of our drive to prepare our keenest, strongest juniors better for championship chess. Over the years we have probably been guilty of providing juniors with too much rapid chess - this event will help them to get used to longer
games. The tournament will run for eight Tuesdays commencing at 5.15 pm. We will endeavour, where practicable, to provide one game live to the internet each week. Time controls are 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move (Fischer). All games are analysed/critiqued with the players by Matthew Sonter. Juniors with a rating of over 800 are strongly encouraged to enter.

Next Sunday 27 July Gold Coast Women's, Girls', Veterans', Disabled and Juniors Under 700

This seven round event commences at 9.30 am next Sunday (registration from 9 am) at the chess centre. All women, girls, veterans (over 50 by 1/1/03), disabled people and both boys and girls with an ACF or QJ rating of under 700 are most welcome to enter (entry form on our webpage). Payment may be
made online. Please pay beforehand because, as usual, there is a late fee if you pay on the day. Time controls 20 mins a side plus 30 secs a move (Fischer).

Sat/Sun 9/10 August Green and Gold Cup for players rated under 1450

This is a unique 'rapid mix' tournament which is the brainchild of Henry MacLennan, who will be the arbiter for the event. There will be 13 rounds over the two days with a 9.30 am start both days and an earlier than usual finish on both days. All players with an ACF or QJ rating of under 1450 may
enter. Various time controls will be used. We look forward to welcoming you to the centre for this popular tournament.

Tweed Mall Shopping Centre Junior Tournament Sat 16 August

The next 'shopping centre' event for juniors is scheduled for Sat 16 August from 9.15 am to 5 pm. As usual, entry is free before the day, with a late fee payable if you enter on the day. With $500 in cash prizes available, we expect the large turnout that has become the norm for shopping centre
tournaments. There is an online entry form on our webpage.

The event doubles as a teams event for local schools. Students may form themselves into teams of four to vie for the Tweed Mall Schools Chess Trophy. Eligible schools include St Joseph's Primary, Terranora Primary, Banora Point Public School, Lindisfarne Anglican School, Coolangatta Primary, Tweed Heads Primary, St James Primary, Bilambil Primary, Tweed Heads South Primary, Centaur Primary, Lakeside Christian College, Fingal Head Primary, Kingscliff Primary, Kingscliff High and Tweed River High.

Chill-Out Chess

Chill-out chess for 15-24 year olds has been growing steadily. Each Friday from 7 pm to 10 pm there are roughly the same number of girls as boys. They turn up casually dressed, they choose their own music, they play teams chess, normal chess, lightning chess, transfer chess and sometimes they play
cards. They sometimes drink coffee but more usually hot chocolate. They eat café food and they relax and enjoy each others' company. Come along and give it a try - if you qualify by age!

Results

There has been a lot of chess since the last bulletin.

Moulthun Ly won the inaugural Junior Masters event with a picket fence 8/8. Somerset College just retained their Gold Coast High Schools title ahead of Merrimac High. Grandmaster Ian Rogers retained his Gold Coast Open title with 7/7 ahead of Stephen Solomon. The under 1600 event was shared between
Anthony Lam, Sean Karita and Wayne Fraser. Ian Rogers followed up his Gold Coast triumph with a win in the Caloundra Open the following weekend. Toshi Kimura won the Queensland Junior title, Ben Lazarus the under 16s, Steven Cooke the under 14s, Moulthun Ly the under 12s, Kelvin Finke the under 10s and Kevin Zhu the under 8s. The Southport Park Shopping Centre event was won by Phachara Wongwichit.

Results of all events available at www.gardinerchess.com. The results page is updated at least every weekend.

Finally, the Corporate Charity Teams Challenge was very well enjoyed by all those involved and approximately $1,600 was raised for Paradise Kids.

Private Coaching

Players of any age may take advantage of our private coaching programme. We have International Masters and strong, experienced, highly-ranked coaches available to coach at the centre on a regular basis, at very reasonable rates. Occasionally we have Grandmasters available, also at reasonable
rates. For example, both of Australia's Grandmasters, Ian Rogers and Darryl Johansen will be available to coach at the centre during the week commencing Monday 22 September. Johansen may also be available to coach during the following week commencing Monday 29 September. Please contact us if you
would like to make a booking for any of our coaches.

Gardiner Chess coach in top form

IM Stephen Solomon has been in top class form virtually all year. He has followed up his outright wins in the Ballarat Open (Australia's number two weekender) and Victorian Open with a win in the Australian Masters 9.5/11 and the Adelaide University Open (ahead of GM Darryl Johansen). The Australian Masters win was particularly meritorious as Stephen finished ahead of three IMs and four FMs.

Australian Championships Play-Off

Just a reminder that the long awaited play-off for the Australian title between Grandmaster Darryl Johansen and Nick Speck will be held at the Gardiner Chess Centre on the evenings of Tues, Wed, Thurs and Friday 23-26 September commencing at 6 pm each evening. Locals can watch the game live at
the centre and interact with GM Ian Rogers who will give live analysis in the cafe on each evening. For those who can't make it to the centre, the games will be relayed live to the internet via <www.gardinerchess.com>. Time controls will be 90 minutes a side plus 60 seconds a move. If the score is 2-2 after the Friday game, two rapid games will be played to try and produce a winner. If still tied, the title will be shared.

Big Chess Fortnight at the end of September/beginning of October

Plan ahead to participate in the big chess fortnight in South East Queensland at the end of September.

20/21 September Gold Coast Classic (As usual GM Ian Rogers will be playing and possibly GM Darryl Johansen) GP Event incorporating popular teams event
Venue Somerset College Sports Pavilion

23-26 September Australian Championships Play-Off Johansen v Speck at the chess centre

27/28 Redcliffe Challenge, Clontarf GP Event

4/5 Oct Tweed Heads Open GP Event

Mudgeeraba Bridge Club

We welcome new bridge players to our centre on Mondays and Thursdays at 9.15 am for a 9.30 am start. Numbers have been growing recently and there is every indication that the club will thrive. 'Learn to play' bridge is available on Tuesdays, also at 9.30 am. Pre-registration is required. We now are encouraging players to join our Mudgeeraba Bridge Club - at this time of the year it is only $10 to join, along with a QBA levy of $4.40 and ABF levy of $9.00 if you are not already affiliated. MONDAY NIGHT CLASSIC CHESS (AND SOCIAL CHESS)

Monday night is 'classic chess' night at the Gardiner Chess Centre. This Monday 9 June at 6.30pm sees the start of another competition, this time running for six Mondays. Time controls as usual 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move (Fischer). We would love to see a big field contesting this event. The tournament which concluded last Monday was won by Noel Hodges with Bernie Saavedra runner-up.

At the conclusion of this event, we will be commencing another FIDE-rated tournament (Monday 21 July to Monday 9 September). This will be accompanied once again by a reserves event.

For those who simply want to play social chess, there are a few regular social players turning up on Mondays. The cost for social players is only $3.30 per week (including a coffee).

CORPORATE/COMMUNITY TEAMS CHARITY CHALLENGE

This event involving teams of four, now in its third year, will be on at the Gardiner Chess Centre next Sunday 15 June from 10am to 4pm , followed by a Happy Hour. The main aim is to raise funds for Paradise Kids, so the emphasis is more on the social side than winning. However, teams may wish to strengthen their chances by making a bid to have GM Ian Rogers, IM Stephen Solomon, WIM Anastasiya Sorokina and Matthew Sonter in their teams. The highest bid received so far is $200 from the defending champions, Russell Mowles' team, Gold Coast Trophies. As this is a donation to Paradise Kids with no material benefit, it is fully tax deductible. So gather some friends and put them into teams of four, and if you are resolutely looking to win the trophy, put in a bid for one of our Superstars. We hope to see you next Sunday.

VISIT OF GRANDMASTER IAN ROGERS TO THE GOLD COAST

Ian Rogers will be visiting the Gold Coast from next Saturday 14 June through to Sunday 29 June. As has been the case for the last 10 years, Ian will be teaching in different schools for the entire two week period. Of course, he will also be competing in the Gold Coast Open.

There are three additional opportunities to interact with Ian at the chess centre whilst he is here on the coast.

On Wednesday 18 June he will be conducting a simultaneous exhibition from 7pm sharp. All welcome. Cost is very modest at $5.50.

On Thursday, 19 June he will be attending junior club from 4.30pm and conducting a blindfold simul against approx six teams of eight kids.

On Wednesday 25 June at the centre Ian will be conducting a lecture entitled 'Garry Kasparov at 40 - the end of an era?' The cost including coffee is $7.70. This is an opportunity not to be missed by the chess community. In February, when Ian last conducted a lecture at the centre, Peter Bender wrote:

A NIGHT AT THE MUSIC HALL

"Rogers and Hammerstein"

I had the pleasure of attending Ian Rogers' Secrets of the Top Ten at Wijk aan Zee - a lecture designed for adults (Gardiner Chess Centre). I was curious to see what was meant by 'secrets', and to discover whether lectures on chess are as boring as chess videos?

For in excess of two hours Ian Rogers manouevred the display board and audience with wonderful tales, anecdotes and game commentaries concerning the top ten players at this fabled tournament.

We felt sadness for Timman and Karpov as they start to find it hard to keep pace with the current generation of players. There were cheers as we heard how Judit Polgar broke the psychological shackles to beat the big three of

Anand, Kasparov and Kramnik. You could feel the heartbeats race as we went with Kramnik through his recovery after not playing a human for eighteen months.

Then there was the cognitive journey of understanding 'Mr Nice Guy' Vishy Anand and his games. Suffering and obscurity came to mind as we traced Bareev, Van Wely and Ponomariov.

And my personal favourite; the ever attacking Shirov. Got to love the person who uses the Caro-Kann as a weapon of destruction!

For extra value there were tidbits on Leko, Adams and let's not forget the man we love to hate - Kasparov.

However, I think the highlight for me and probably many others came when David Lovejoy asked for commentary on the only lost game of the Chinese lad who won the B group at Corus. Ian explained with humbleness how he himself inflicted the only loss upon the winner of the tournament. I think Shirov is still my favourite but gee Ian runs a close second.

Thanks for the time, dedication, emotional rollercoaster and fun of the evening. If you feel you missed something, you did.

GOLD COAST OPEN SAT/SUN 21/22 JUNE

This class 3 Grand Prix event is the flagship event of the Gold Coast Chess Club. As usual we anticipate a good turnout. Apart from GM Ian Rogers, we have already received interstate entries from Erik Teichmann, Brian Jones and the Oliver family. The tournament is being held at the Robina Town Centre Community Centre which is recognised as a first class venue, being large, air-conditioned and carpeted. Once again the Gold Coast Chess Club will put on complimentary drinks/nibbles for happy hour at 7pm on the Saturday. We hope to see you there.

CALOUNDRA OPEN SAT/SUN 28/29 JUNE

If you cannot come with your family, then Gardiner Chess has put together a package for the weekend, leaving the chess centre at 5pm on the Friday on the Gardiner Chess bus and returning at approx 11am on the Monday. Contact Graeme Gardiner if you are interested at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com or 5522 7221.

Moves are afoot to try and introduce a South East Queensland Big Board league in 2004.

JUNIOR MASTERS TOURNAMENT TERM THREE

In term two we held a junior masters series for players with a rating of at least 800. The aim was to give Gold Coast juniors the opportunity to play championship length games each week in preparation for the Queensland Junior Championships and later in the year the Australian Junior Championships. Matt Sonter does a post game analysis of all games.

We aim to continue with this project in term three with a new competition commencing on Tuesday 22 July and running for eight weeks with the last round on Tues 9 September. Games commence at 5.15pm with time controls of 90 minutes a side plus 30 seconds a move (Fischer). Keen juniors should contact Gardiner Chess to enter.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAY-OFF

The long awaited play-off for the Australian title between Grandmaster Darryl Johansen and Nick Speck will be held at the Gardiner Chess Centre on the evenings of Tues, Wed, Thurs and Friday 23-26 September commencing at 6pm each evening. Locals can watch the game live at the centre and interact with GM Ian Rogers who will give live analysis in the cafe on each evening. For those who can't make it to the centre, the games will be relayed live to the internet via www.gardinerchess.com. Time controls will be 90 minutes a side plus 60 seconds a move. If the score is 2-2 after the Friday game, two rapid games will be played to try and produce a winner. If still tied, the title will be shared.

LADDER

We are planning to introduce a chess ladder at the centre. The only matter to be decided is the format. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

CHESS SHOP

A reminder that we have a full range of chess goods in our chess shop. If there is something you want which we do not stock, we can normally get it in within a couple of days.

BRIDGE

The official launch of the Mudgeeraba Bridge Club was held on Thursday 29 May. President of the Australian Bridge Federation & the Queensland Bridge Association, Keith McDonald, kindly did the official opening. Junior Masters Tournament Tuesdays 5 pm

For the first time we are running a serious chess event for juniors keen to prepare for top level competition such as the Queensland and Australian Junior championships. Australian Clubs Teams Championships 29 Sept to 3 Oct

The Gold Coast Chess Club will be entering a team (or teams) in the inaugural Australian Clubs Teams Championships at Rydges Oasis Resort, Caloundra. This is a FIDE rated tournament. Other confirmed clubs are St George Sydney (incl GM Rogers), Universities of Sydney, Canberra , Bullwinkle (Brisbane) and Suncoast. There will be eight players per team, of which at least three must be female and three male. Gold Coast Chess Club President Peter Haron has decided that there will be a selection process for the Gold Coast team. A second team will be entered for the experience if there is sufficient interest. Nominations should be sent to me at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com. I will also be actively asking around. Nominations need to be in by the next committee meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday 20 May. The committee will also decide if the team(s) will be sponsored in any way.

Suncoast Open, Caloundra 28-29 June

For several years we have taken the opportunity to make the Suncoast Open a family weekend away for the Gold Coast chess community. This year as a group we will be staying at Gemini Resort phone 5492 2200. Families can make their own booking or Gardiner Chess will be taking a group on the chess bus (package price). Full details from the chess centre (details on the webpage shortly).

After School Chess

Participation in after school chess continues to grow very healthily. Not only are the numbers growing, but the standard of play seems to be improving rapidly. Use of after school bus pick ups is also growing very quickly. The cost of after school chess (kids to be collected at 6 pm at the centre) is a very inexpensive at $5.50 per week plus $3.30 per week if the bus pick up is required. There is a 20% discount for term payment in advance which comes to $39.60 (coaching) + $23.80 (bus) = $63.40 for a 9 week term.

Gardiner Chess Clinic 7,8,9 and 11 July

As usual we will be holding a school holiday chess clinic for juniors of all standards in the June/July school holidays. The shopping centre event scheduled for 10 July has been moved from Runaway Bay Shopping Village to Southport Park Shopping Centre due to a problem with the dates.

Gold Coast Corporate Charity Teams Chess Challenge Sunday 15 June

This is being held for the third year, once again with the net proceeds going to Paradise Kids. Corporate and Community teams of four will compete for the title. Entry forms will be available on the Gardiner Chess webpage shortly. Although the event has an emphasis on the social side, with the standard of play of lesser importance, Grandmaster Ian Rogers has agreed to play board one for the highest bidding team, with the tax deductible proceeds going to Paradise Kids.

The event being held at the Gardiner Chess Centre goes from 10 am to 4 pm and costs $120 per team of four (incl BBQ lunch, and a happy hour with complimentary drinks provided by Gardiner Chess). Entries can be received by Graeme Gardiner at ggardiner@gardinerchess.com.

Upcoming Schools Teams Competitions

The Gold Coast Primary Schools Teams Round Two (Tues/Wed 13/14 May) and Gold Coast High Schools Teams Championships (Wed 18 June) are both coming up shortly. Please encourage your school to enter teams if they are not already doing so.

Queensland Junior Championships, Brisbane 1-4 July

This important event is scheduled for Brisbane (venue available soon). Please make a diary date if you are keen to participate in this state title event.

Just turn up at 7pm on Fridays. In a few weeks time, it is intended to start a friendly teams competition as part of the evening.

After-School Chess

The numbers participating in after-school chess have been increasing steadily. We now have between 20 and 50 each afternoon. All participants are encouraged to take advantage of the 20% discount to enrol for term two over the next two weeks. We are also hoping that several students from the after-school chess programme will enter some or all of the Easter events to try for a rating.

Junior Masters Tournament from Tuesday 29 April

For several years Gold Coast juniors have been disadvantaged by not having 'long games' experience when participating in Queensland or Australian Junior Championships. This is now changing. From Tuesday 29 April at 5pm we are commencing an eight round tournament for juniors rated 800+ with time controls of 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move (Fischer). Juniors who are serious about their chess should not miss this.

Easter Weekender

We are experimenting with a late 12 noon start each day to allow families to do their Easter things. Entries are coming in nicely. The strongest players are encouraged to make the trip to Canberra for the Doeberl Cup, Australia 's premier weekender.

Junior Chess Clinic

This will be held at the centre on Tues/Wed/Fri 22, 23 and 25 April from 9am to 5pm . The kids will receive plenty of coaching and play plenty of rated games. Also we offer table tennis and basketball for kids to relax between sessions.

Gold Coast Rapid Championships

In order to accommodate the numbers for this popular event, we are holding it over two days. On Saturday 17 May entries will be limited to those with an ACF or QJ rating of under 1000.On Sunday 18 May entries are open to all.

Queensland Women's Championships

These will be held at the centre on Sat/Sun 24/25 May. We would love to see a record turnout of women and girls for this tournament.

Chess Shop

Don't forget the fairly wide range of sets, clocks, books, CDs and videos that we have available in our chess shop. Purchase at the centre or order online via our webpage. If we don't have what you are after, we can normally get it in for you very quickly.

Adult Social 'Drop-In' Chess

We are keen to get this going at all times of the week but of course it requires people to know that there will be other 'like minded' people present. We are trying to get 'drop in' social chess started on Monday evenings for starters. So if you just want to play social chess, please turn up on Mondays from 7pm .

Gold Coast Primary School Chess Championships

A record number of 773 students from 39 schools turned up to round one of the Gold Coast Primary Schools Teams Championships at Robina Town Centre Community Centre on 18/19 March. Gardiner Chess Bulletin # 4 - 15 March

Gold Coast Active fully booked, Easter weekender, School Holiday junior clinic, Gold Coast Junior Championships, Justin Pengelley seeks match with sidestake, Bridge

Gold Coast Active Championships

For the first time in 12 years, I'm embarrassed to say that we will have to turn a few chess players away tomorrow. We have reached the cut off limit of 80 and have a waiting list of 8 at this time. It would be even more if we hadn't warned our juniors on Thursday night that we were booked out. Last year we only had 77 entrants.

We have taken action to rectify this in future. For future Sunday tournaments such as the Gold Coast Rapid, Gold Coast Allegro and Gold Coast Lightning Championships, we will add an under 1000 event on the Saturday. With the Sunday event being open to all, this  should split the numbers so that we do not have to turn people away.

Wendy and I offer our apologies to anyone who wished to play tomorrow but is now unable to do so.

Easter weekender

As mentioned in the last bulletin, the Toowoomba Chess Club will not be running the Darling Downs Open this year. CAQ have given the ok for the Gardiner Chess Centre to run a tournament to fill the gap. I discussed the format with several interested parties, and with one exception, everyone wanted an event that is played over two days, rather than the entire weekend. I would like to have run an event  with long time controls over the entire four days, but it appears that there is simply not the market for it. Maybe next year.

So the format will be:

Sat/Sun 19/20 April 2003

Gardiner Chess Centre, 11 Hardys Road Mudgeeraba

6 rounds plus 10 secs a move (Fischer)

Game times Sat 12 noon, 2.30pm and 5pm Sun 12 noon, 2.30pm and 5pm (Prizes 7.30pm)

Entry Fees Adults $45, Concession $35, Junior $25. Non CAQ members add $10. Late payments on the day add $20.

Entry Forms from Gardiner Chess Centre, Phone 5522 7221 Fax 5522 7760 Email ggardiner@gardinerchess.com

Pay Online by credit card at the Gardiner Chess website www.gardinerchess.com (hit the 'pay fees' button) or send your payment direct to our bank account Bank of Queensland BSB 124-008 Account 10-579454

Prizes total $1,000 1st $300 2nd $200 3rd $100 Plus four ratings prizes of $100 each

School Holiday Chess Clinic

This will be held at the Gardiner Chess Centre on Tues, Wed and Friday 22, 23 and 25 April. For juniors of all standards, the cost will be $115 inc GST (Early Bird by Friday 18 April $105) Pay fees at www.gardinerchess.com

Gold Coast Junior Championships

This popular event will be held at the Gardiner Chess Centre on Sat/Sun 26/27 April. There will be titles in the under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 divisions. Cash prizes total $500 plus ratings prizes. Pay fees at www.gardinerchess.com

Justin Pengelley seeks match against player with ACF rating of 2000+

Justin Pengelley, who is currently taking part in the Ruth Coxhill Memorial FIDE rated tournament, is seeking a four game match against a player with an ACF rating of over 2000 to be held at the centre. (Previously I incorrectly specified a FIDE rated player, but Justin has advised that this is not necessary). Justin is prepared to put up a substantial sidestake (several hundred dollars) for the opportunity. Please contact me (Graeme Gardiner) if you are interested.

Mudgeeraba Bridge Club affiliating with QBA

I have been advised by the Manager of the Queensland Bridge Association that the application for the Mudgeeraba Bridge Club to affiliate with the Queensland Bridge Association will be considered at the next meeting of the QBA on 27 March. She advised me that this should just be a formality. The Bridge Club currently meets at the Gardiner Chess Centre at 9.30am on Mondays (0-200MPS), Tuesdays (learn to play) and Thursdays (Open).

With very best wishes to all

Justin Pengelley seeks match against FIDE rated player

Justin is prepared to put up a substantial sidestake (several hundred dollars) for the opportunity. Please contact me (Graeme Gardiner) if you are interested.

Easter Weekend

The Darling Downs Open is not being held this Easter. After discussions with CAQ, the Gardiner Chess Centre will be holding an event over Easter. Full details will be issued within a week, but the format is likely to be two games a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 12 noon and 5pm and one on Monday commencing at 10am . The likely time controls will be 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move. I would be interested to receive feedback on this matter within the next day or so.

The strongest players are encouraged to fly to Canberra for the Doeberl Cup, Australia 's premier weekend event in the chess calendar. It is hoped that the event being held at the Gardiner Chess Centre will attract those players who miss the opportunity for "the real think", and who cannot make the Canberra event.

Other Upcoming Events at the Gardiner Chess Centre
